Ex-UGA recruit to play football at SEC rival

Ex-UGA commit (247sports)

Ex-UGA commit (247sports)

Ex-UGA commit Zack Witchett committed to Ole Miss on Saturday.

The DB-WR, who just finished up his first year at Hinds junior college, picked Ole Miss over Mississippi State, Kansas and Oklahoma State.

“I heard he was going to do it a couple of days ago,” said Stanley Pritchett, who coached Witchett at Booker T. Washington High School.

“I think Ole Miss is good for him. He wanted to get into the SEC. He wanted to get into Georgia but they never came back after him. I think Ole Miss will be a good fit for him. I think he felt comfortable with Coach [Hugh Freeze].

Last year, Witchett was a longtime UGA commit who had his scholarship offer revoked a month before signing day because of off-the-field issues. Witchett had serious interest from Memphis but they ran out of scholarships. He could’ve signed with South Carolina State on signing day but opted to go with a junior college so he could eventually play D1 football.

Witchett had a stellar freshman season at Hinds and plans to enroll at Ole Miss in January 2013. He talked to Scout.com’s Chuck Rounsaville:

“I can’t tell you how excited I am. Coming out of high school, Ole Miss continued to show me some love when others backed off and I always remembered that,” he said. “They continued to show me the most love. I asked myself, ‘why should I make them wait on me?’ I knew where I wanted to go and they deserved an answer because of the way they treated me.

Saturday’s decision was considered a happy ending by Witchett’s high school coach:

“It turned out well for Zack. He went to junior college and got himself together. He now has the chance to play in the SEC, which is what he always wanted to do.”

We’ve got 36 scholarships and we don’t offer this kid?

One day, with the wisdom that comes with hindsight, the lad will be grateful that he didn’t go to UGA and have to play with the dummies and thugs that Mark Richt recruits.

“off field” issues. I have had enough of those. Booker T Washington HS is not up to par any ways.

So Sunny, why didn’t he come to UGA? Oh yeah, it’s right there in the article. Your comment isn’t naive or ignorant at all.

Yea and the minute he commits UGA fans complain about the type of players UGA recruits.

As with all of the UGA commits that eventually played somewhere else (and there is a ton of them), he will be better off as a man and a football player. Good luck to him.

Congratulations to young Mr. Witchett! It’s truly nice to see a kid turn things around when faced with adversity — even if it is self-induced. Most kids just slide on down the slope once things go bad. This one dropped back and re-evaluated his life/priorities and now appears to be making good decisions and thinking straight. Kudos to him for succeeding where so many others have failed. With resolve like that he will be successful in life, regardless of what happens on the football field (and btw, this is a VERY good pick-up for Ole Miss!). Good to see a story like this!!1

He had his chance and he blew it with his “off the field issues”. UGA doesn’t need any more off the field issues so they didn’t want him PERIOD end of issue.

Good for the kid….BUT
Should coaches be able to make a kid pee in the cup before an OFFER and after the kid is Qualified? Hell Yes.
Should the NCAA force all members to have the same standards for all Students to get in college? yes
Should the NCAA have the same policies for rules infractions? HELL YES.
Should the NCAA stop a kid kicked out of one D1 school from enrolling & Playing a sport at another D1 school? YES.

This Kid is a great example of a kid that the NCAA should let go D1 after playing in a down league not just making him go JUCO, sit a year to then go D1. IMO

With all the talent UGA can recruit in this state, this is no big loss. Best wishes to the kid to continue turning his life around. Perhaps the recruiters need to prepare a portfolio they can show recruits (and their families) that highlights all the recruits that have done stupid things and suffered the consequences. Maybe a dose of reality will make them use their brain before they make a stupid decision that costs them a scholarship to play at their preferred school.

Dude are you serious?
McNiel is going to go JUCO no matter where he commits to.
Robinson and Dye are not even the highest on our board. Just because
A kid is from GA does not make them top priority for the coaching staff.

GFJacket….recruiters will never do that because that would HELP the lesser schools typically.
The thing most BIG TIME schools will NEVER show is what their players do after their college days.
Teams want to show NFL players.
Some love their graduation rates but don’t always show what majors they received their degrees in.
Most schools will not Show what the ex-players are doing with their life for the 10 years after they get out of college or 10 years after they get out of the NFL.

Tampa Gator….Most schools don’t do that much unless they are really doing GREAT things. The Bad ones are forgotten and the average people are not covered much. Typically you have to go to the Alumni pages of the school to find that stuff out. You know the 3rd child was born to So-&-So WR and He working for Florida Power and Gas as a HR Director.

Recruiting note….outside of Georgia and Florida related to those who care or don’t care….or hate me for putting it on here:

Looks like Vernon Hargraves….the 5-star CB from the Tampa area will be committing in about a month’s time….and Florida is currently #1…whatever that means these days. If he commits to the Gators….that will probably start a 4 and 5 star domino fall towards the Gators….and might include Tunsil and a couple of more Tampa area recruits…..expecially one of the top ranked DEs from the area that peformed so well at THE OPENING. Muschamp is really recruiting well at Florida and building a very strong program….period.

Heck….the Braves could be in first place by the end of the weekend. And…at the end of the night….we will all be one day closer to college football kick off time.
