Top recruit: “There’s nothing on God’s green earth that will change my mind about …”

.Georgia Tech-bound Shamire Devine won MVP honors at Atlanta NIKE camp (AJC)

Shamire DeVne committed to Georgia Tech over FSU, among others. He is ranked as the nation's No. 11 OT by Scout (AJC)

Georgia Tech’s top football recruit for 2013 has won rave reviews after a sizzling summer.

Shamire DeVine, who committed to Georgia Tech over Florida State and others, is ranked as the state’s top prospect along the offensive line by Scout.com’s Chad Simmons — who also thought the 6-foot-7, 350-pounder from Tri-Cities High School was the best offensive tackle earlier this month at The Opening, which featured around 150 of the nation’s top players.

“He just keeps getting better and better; there’s no doubt he’s separated himself, in my opinion, as the top offensive lineman in Georgia,” Simmons said. “Georgia Tech is getting a heck of an offensive lineman with so much upside. He’s still underdeveloped physically, from a strength standpoint. He can get so much stronger in the upper and lower body. He may end up playing in college at 365 pounds.

“At The Opening, he was pushing people off the ball. His slide-kick has gotten so much better, as far as pass protection. He’s playing with much more of a better balance. He’s not lunging out and trying to hit people. He’s just a raw kid that gets better every time I see him.”

DeVine is part of a “package deal” that has committed to Georgia Tech, along with his Tri-Cities teammate and good friend, offensive lineman Jeremi Hall. Both are rated as 4-star recruits, and some of Devine’s other football scholarship offers were UGA, Florida, Southern Cal and Tennessee.

He’s ranked as the nation’s No. 11 offensive tackle by Scout.

DeVine caused some Georgia Tech fans to panic when he showed up at a Tennessee prospect camp this summer. “I was there to support my teammates who went there to try to earn scholarships,” he said.

Last week, DeVine made an appearance at Georgia Tech’s summer camp. “I didn’t participate but I went up there to meet our new quarterback [Damon Mitchell]. I like him. He was cool.”

Where do things stand between DeVine and Georgia Tech? “I’m 100 percent with Georgia Tech, but I want to go see the rest of the country.”

Does that mean DeVine plans to visit other schools? “I don’t know yet. I will have to talk that out with my future head coach [Paul Johnson].

Where else would DeVine want to visit? “I want to go to Hawaii, California and New York – all the scenery places. But I’m 100-percent committed to Georgia Tech. There’s nothing on God’s green earth that will change my mind about that, besides them dropping me. That’s it. I love it there.”

Misinformed, that is a fantastic point. People are arguing – and I mean not just GT fans, but the media at large – that GT’s recently recruited O-linemen may actually be better than the starters we’ll have this year, they just don’t have the man-strength/experience/familiarity with the system yet. When this year’s rsFR are rsJRs, GT’s O-line will do some fantastic things, especially with a strong running/passing QB behind them.

GFY, I don’t know if you’re a Dawg fan or not, but Vad Lee did with the AP Player of the Year in North Carolina over Christian Lemay. So, yeah, I’d say he can hit the broad side of a barn. With 300+ pound linemen and a QB who accounted for nearly 5,000 yards his senior year, look for a lot more passing from GT starting in 2013 with Days starting at RB.

High school? Come on…..Nesbitt was a great qb (not passing wise) at Greene County. As soon as qb ends up at Tech he can’t pass…..last good passing qb was Godsey. Passing is not in the cards for Tech with current coach and don’t give me baloney about setting up pass with the run.

GFY, only time will tell. We can argue until the cows come home. If you’ve actually seen his videos, Vad Lee throws an amazing deep post (leads the WR, throws to the outside shoulder, etc), which is where about 50% of Tech’s throws go. If you’re just a biased fan that says “tech can’t pass” because we have “a high school offense,” then nothing will change your mind except seeing it with your own eyes. Bottom line in my opinion though, the pieces are coming together.

DeVine will need to lose about 30 lbs. but he should be the best OL at Tech in years. His buddy Hall needs to lose about 50 lbs. Weight watchers has two new members. Maybe Hall can play DT ’cause they can score 30 and still lose with the “D” they had last year.

Whats wrong with you UGA fans, because your recruits are not as sound and speak of intelligent way you see fault in TECH’s recruit, I feel sorry for you guys, UGA need to find kids with type of intelligent, maybe they will have all their recruits enroll on time, maybe have all their team starters play in all the games. UGA have hater fans, but you have Saint MR as the coach, good and bad don’t mix and some of their 2013 recruits see that.

Not sure about dangerious, but Tech is not even the most dangerous campus in Georgia, much less the nation.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2010/09/14/most-dangerous-college-campuses-ranked.html

Schools ranked more dangerous than Georgia Tech include Michigan, Wake Forest, Tulane, Cal-Berkeley, VPISU, Vandy, Miami, USCw, Emory, and Stanford. Some of the schools listed surprised me.

Just b/c someone doesn’t want to get stabbed doesn’t make them a coward. I travel to Tech for the monthly swing dance, and the campus is much more sketch than UGA’s. There’s a reason they have 3-5 cops assigned to the BP gas station right by campus every night.

Lemay didn’t play his senior year in high school, and was still a higher rated Qb than Lee. many schools didn’t recruit Lee as a Qb but as an athlete he had 1 significant offer outside the ACC from South Carolina. Most every major program recruited Lemay .Lemay was the 6th rated qb nationally, Lee wasn’t rated nationally as a QB.

DeVine, welcome aboard. It seems apparent that the Georgia Institute of Technology is where you are supposed to be. You would not have the strong feeling of acceptance and comfort that you say you have if it were not meant to be,

Relax, son, and enjoy the here-and-now. There will be plenty of time to visit those other locations. (Hawaii, as gift to yourself for a job wel done. California, perhaps for a bowl appearance. New York, to attend some award ceremonies.)

My comment is not based on what I’ve read nor what you say..It’s based on what I and heard come out of Paul Johnson’s mouth..Even based on what you say it’s stupid policy.Behind his back? The kid has not signed anything he’s not property.A few weeks before signing day? Again, until he signs he should be free to visit whatever school he wants whenever he chooses.CPJ says that allowing a kid to visit other schools is like his wife dating other men. Those words came out of his mouth..Nice pickup, moronic attitude.

You obviously think that anyone’s opinion that differs from yours is negativity. That and your use of the partner says a lot about your reasoning skills..I think this guy is a nice pickup for Tech and would rather see him play there if he chooses not to go to Georgia.CPJ’s stance on recruits visiting other schools is documented..Its his policy and he runs his program however he wants I just think its a bad way to deal with 17 year old kids who sometimes just want to enjoy the free trips.

I wish I could remember who it was that brought up the “changes” to Tech’s offense .Change being used for lack of a better word … tweaks is probably more accurate but doesn’t convey why players like this are probably being sought out .

Tokyo seemed to think that MORE passing would be in the cards period . What I got from the poster I read several months back was that more of a power (running) element would be emphasized and THEN the natural passing elements of the CPJ offense would take over ( in each game ) .

Basically a move towards less reliance on speed and misdirection to set up the pass and a little more towards a “Here is EXACTLY where we are going … stop it if you can” Husker type of approach with the already existent parts of the offenses passing game thrown in . I have no idea if that is true but I would love to see it in action ….
