Top recruit: “There’s nothing on God’s green earth that will change my mind about …”

.Georgia Tech-bound Shamire Devine won MVP honors at Atlanta NIKE camp (AJC)

Shamire DeVne committed to Georgia Tech over FSU, among others. He is ranked as the nation's No. 11 OT by Scout (AJC)

Georgia Tech’s top football recruit for 2013 has won rave reviews after a sizzling summer.

Shamire DeVine, who committed to Georgia Tech over Florida State and others, is ranked as the state’s top prospect along the offensive line by Scout.com’s Chad Simmons — who also thought the 6-foot-7, 350-pounder from Tri-Cities High School was the best offensive tackle earlier this month at The Opening, which featured around 150 of the nation’s top players.

“He just keeps getting better and better; there’s no doubt he’s separated himself, in my opinion, as the top offensive lineman in Georgia,” Simmons said. “Georgia Tech is getting a heck of an offensive lineman with so much upside. He’s still underdeveloped physically, from a strength standpoint. He can get so much stronger in the upper and lower body. He may end up playing in college at 365 pounds.

“At The Opening, he was pushing people off the ball. His slide-kick has gotten so much better, as far as pass protection. He’s playing with much more of a better balance. He’s not lunging out and trying to hit people. He’s just a raw kid that gets better every time I see him.”

DeVine is part of a “package deal” that has committed to Georgia Tech, along with his Tri-Cities teammate and good friend, offensive lineman Jeremi Hall. Both are rated as 4-star recruits, and some of Devine’s other football scholarship offers were UGA, Florida, Southern Cal and Tennessee.

He’s ranked as the nation’s No. 11 offensive tackle by Scout.

DeVine caused some Georgia Tech fans to panic when he showed up at a Tennessee prospect camp this summer. “I was there to support my teammates who went there to try to earn scholarships,” he said.

Last week, DeVine made an appearance at Georgia Tech’s summer camp. “I didn’t participate but I went up there to meet our new quarterback [Damon Mitchell]. I like him. He was cool.”

Where do things stand between DeVine and Georgia Tech? “I’m 100 percent with Georgia Tech, but I want to go see the rest of the country.”

Does that mean DeVine plans to visit other schools? “I don’t know yet. I will have to talk that out with my future head coach [Paul Johnson].

Where else would DeVine want to visit? “I want to go to Hawaii, California and New York – all the scenery places. But I’m 100-percent committed to Georgia Tech. There’s nothing on God’s green earth that will change my mind about that, besides them dropping me. That’s it. I love it there.”

That’s right, you got all these guys up in your business- take advantage of it and travel. This should be a fun time.

The great thing is, with a Tech degree you’ll get to do it all over again- because you’ll get to pick the city you want to work in.

Go Jackets.

With that size, unless he has the quickness of a cougar, he will fail miserably in a chop-block offense.

He may be 100% now, but he will certainly change his mind once he sees another school. No recruit with more than two stars in their right mind would commit to Ga Tech. If they do, it already tells you something about their judgement and common sense. Go to FSU young man.

GSUStud,

If he’s going 100% for football then he isn’t in his right mind. But every now and then some athletes care about getting an education and GT trumps FSU in that regard.

It is very funny to think that ones comments (GSUStud) would have a positive impact on their schools recruiting. Most of these kids that do read the comments on here can see which team people root for by their previous comments. GSUStud is one of the easier ones to figure out. I don’t blaim this kid for taking some trips on others dime.

He really likes the Computer Science at TECH for his major. He knows the ATL. His Family likes how close he will be. From my lil dealings Roddy has really talked to him about TECH and the Career opportunities no matter what football holds. He knows he can get to the NFL form just about ANY school with his talent but he really LOVE what GIT can offer in the classroom. He wants to play with TECHNOLOGY in the Computer Science Field.

LOOK I talk SMACK on the blogs but i also wish kids the BEST. I Don’t Attack the kids when they are making a college choice. I do given them crap when they get in trouble or do stupid things, but I do know they are young men that don’t have a D.I. to bust their butts and Drill them Hard for 16 weeks. Weeks spent breaking them down and weeks building them back up then a few weeks making them a unit, is what a Football Camp is supposed to do with a more kinder & gentler hand. TEAM BONDING can be developed in many different fashions and the COACH has to read/assess his players to decide how to BUILD a TEAM from the Individuals.

Think you were reading what I said a bit wrong SMART. I was not saying you attack kids, but others do. HOOOOORAHHHH!!!! I believe in team bonding as well. You are right that the COACH or leader has to have the ability to read each individual and decide which way of leadership is best for them.

Hope you never need these losers to save your butt sometime. For what most policemen get paid to save some of you folks from your own stupidity, it is obvious you would probably prefer to take over your own security yourself. That would be quite a civilization then wouldn’t it? I guess you must have recently gotten a ticket for disobeying the law, and thus your opinion of policemen. I guess those loser G.I.’s, must be just as bad, except they don’t give you tickets. They just allow you to insult the very people that protect you in a society, that is civilized.

A few months ago one of the Tech posters made a brief reference to changes in the way GT goes about its blocking . He didn’t go into detail but he really didn’t have to by the way he phrased it . ( I would expect changes in the way the offense works as well ) This young man will work fine if I understood that poster correctly . ( and if HE was correct in his info ;-) )

I’m sure he’s a great athlete but I don’t know how he’ll fit in with GT’s O-line. It’s kind of difficult for a 6′7″, 350 plus pound man to make a cut block, and I don’t know why he would want to play in a system that is a better fit for undersized O-linemen rather than one with a more pass-heavy scheme that could take advantage of his size.

Those who say gt is all chop blocks are idiots. The offense will be much more passing with the new line of qb’s coming in and this guy with his size won’t need to chop block. he will just push them over. I think he’s smart to go to gt for this reason and also the academics.

Strong kid, good head on his shoulders. Glad he wanted to meet the QB in his class – that’s a good thing. Although, I’d bet a dollar that mitchell will be playing safety or WR by 2014. I do like that, at least in one case, GT was able to go head to head with FSU, UGA, USC, and UF and come out on top. That says something good about the program.

when cpj first got here he had a small class coming in from chan gailey. he also had zero relationships with any of the high school coaches or players in the state of georgia and the surrounding area.

for that reason he had to modify his recruiting tactics across the board by taking smaller players that were not so coveted.

if you havent noticed this is year 5 of his recruiting and the size and weight of the recruits he is targeting has increased dramatically.

the a backs the b backs the qbs being recruited are all bigger. same with the d backs and linebackers. tall and rangy.

in cpj first few years we had olinemen who played at 250-280 range because we had to work with what we had. if you look at the last few years and this year especially. cpj is bringing in huge athletic linemen. the days of the lsu’s pushing our tiny linemen out of the way may be a thing of the past.

our major concern now is the d line. finding large talented d linemen is still a challenge for gt. of course the same could be said for most all programs except the very elite like tosu and bama an lsu.

as another poster pointed out. cpj will adjust his techniques to suit the transition in player size. guy has been doing the same thing now for 20-30 years. i suspect he knows what he is doing.
