UGA and Georgia Tech make the cut for 4-star defensive lineman

Georgia Tech and UGA made the cut for Jay Woods (AJC)

Georgia Tech and UGA made the cut for Jay Woods (AJC)

UGA and Georgia Tech have made the shortlist for one of the state’s top defensive linemen, Jay Woods.

The 6-foot-2, 278-pounder from Jackson High School cut down from 11 to 6 schools on Tuesday. Along with the in-state rivals, also advancing to the next round were Clemson, Vanderbilt, Missouri and Kentucky.

  • Woods on UGA: “I love their defensive scheme, everything they run. Coach McClendon has been recruiting me hard. I just feel like I fit in their defensive scheme as a three-technique defensive end. That would be all right for me. Another thing they have is my major with the School of Pharmacy.”
  • On Georgia Tech: “I’ve been to Georgia Tech around seven times. The visits … I love the atmosphere and the environment. When I talk to Coach McCollum, he would be a good guy to play for if I came there. He told me he sees me mostly as a noseguard if I came there.”
  • On Vanderbilt: “I just love the university and the city of Nashville. The whole coaching staff, not just the head coach [James Franklin], showed me around the whole school.”
  • On Clemson: “I just enjoyed my visit. The campus was good, the coaches treated me well, and they have my major.”
  • On Missouri: “I was there for the spring game … I love the coaches and academic side of things.”
  • On Kentucky: “I went up there for a visit, and everything about Lexington, when you first walk in it, was wonderful. The coaches send me a postcard every few days so that tells me I’m big in their books. I sat down with [Joker Phillips] and he feels like I can come in there as a freshman and make an impact.”

What’s next for Jay Woods? He will make unofficial or official visits to each school during the season. He has not set a decision date. “Just whenever it feels right.”

NOTES

One of UGA’s top targets at safety, Paris Bostick, decided to delay his college announcement on Tuesday. The 6-foot-2, 220-pounder has narrowed down to UGA and Arkansas. He attends Tampa (Fla.) Plant High School, the alma mater of UGA QB Aaron Murray and former TE Orson Charles. Bostick was one of the stars of last week’s “Dawg Night” prospect camp.

UGA has offered a football scholarship to Herschel Walker’s nephew, Milan Richard, according to ESPN’s Radi Nabulsi. The 6-foot-2, 230-pound tight end is a rising junior from Savannah’s Calvary Day. His mother was an All-American in track at UGA.

Would be awesome if we round out our recruiting class with Jay Woods. We need quality bodies along the D-Line and he fits the bill perfectly.

Jay Woods and UGA would be a great fit. I hope to see him Between the Hedges wearing the Red & Black.

He fits perfectly with the Dawgs defensive scheme and he can earn a degree in Pharmacy.

Sounds like he is a leaning more towards UGA than Tech. UGA has one of the best Pharmacy Schools. If you were holding an offer from UGA and Tech that is a no brainer.

Bostick narrowed his choice between UGA and Arkansas. That one surprised me because you couldn’t pick two school that were any more opposite in everything from make up of the student body to the player emphasis on the football team. Arkansas is more big -12 type team , more wide open offense and Georgia is very conservative.
Must be something else like Bostick have relatives that live in Arkansas.

I have a lot of friends that are now pharmacist that went to Georgia . Even though my degree is business, I did all my studying at the Pharmacy library because it was so quite and easy to get there. One of the best Schools or Departments at Georgia. Woods will love it at Georgia if he chooses them because of the Pharmacy major.

CTG could really develop a player like Jay Woods and help him get to the next level. Not to mention UGA has one of the top Pharmacy Schools in the country.

I hope to see him playing for the Dawgs.

Not enough @$$ to play nose in a 3-4. He’d be more miserable than D. Tyson doing the same. This kid is all 3 technique. I am writing an Rx for Grantham-Garner.

UGA already has two DT’s that have given their verbal, so if he decides to go to UGA, they should be set for a couple of years. Coach Grantham likes to move the big guys around so they are familiar with the three line positions. I would be surprised to see one of the three move to DE or NT, if they can put on the weight needed for the NT position. I think the young man is wise to hold up on his verbal until he sees how the position strength ends up for teams. Clemson and UGA are both vying for M. Adams and his commitment could change things around a lot.

Wouldn’t be surprised versus would be surprised. Moose Johnson is already 313 pounds and is 6′3″. Mayes is a JUCO, so he already has a head start at tackle.

Jay’s teammate, Justin Atkins, has already committed to Tech, but I can’t say one way or another whether that will help with the Jackets or not. My understanding that Clemson has backed off of Jay since they’ve pretty much locked down their D-Line commitments (I think everyone knows why I’m saying this, and if you don’t just look at the recent “surprise” announcement from Atlanta a few weeks back). There’s some question to me about whether Missouri will be too far away from home to play or not, but that’s just a personal guess. Kentucky is an enigma; almost like trying to hug Jell-o, I don’t have a clue why he’s considering them. If Jay’s really interested in Pharmacy School, and UGA has an opening and wants him, then he needs to pull the trigger now before the Bulldogs fill up all their slots because that will be the best place for him, in my humble opinion.

UGA a perfect fit for Jay.. Grantham’s junkyard Dawg defense.. and a degree in Pharmacy.. Dawgs will win the SEC this year and have a huge recruiting class.. set for next couple years.. 6 weeks.. can’t wait !!

Even with the 10-15 pounds that the training table and workout room can put on Jay, I don’t see him as a space-eating 4-technique player. Early playing opportunities might be the deciding factor, particularly given the openings at Tech and the already strong D-line recruiting at UGA.

We have GOT to get at least 3 more OL in this class. This is a big number class and 3 OL is unacceptable. We only have 6 slots or so left, and Richt scares me wanting more WR’s,DB’s etc.
Running the ball wins big games in the SEC. We haven’t done it well in 3 years.

Richt’s best hire has been our DC — he brings enthusiasm, passion, and a kick-butt attitude to the program. I like Richt but if I had my choice, I wish our DC was our head coach — I’m sure he would get rid of Bobo and hire a real OC.

I like that UGA is picking up a ton of defensive players. However, I’m a little concerned about the lack of “Big” offensive linemen. Hopefully there are a few out there that are looking strongly at UGA that we are unaware of.

An Academic Qualifier for GT that plays DL has Mizzou, Vandy, and Kentucky among his final 6 along with GT.

That is called getting out-Recruited if you are GT.

GT FB should NOT be “equal” in the eyes of elite Recruits as those 3 schools listed above.

After UGA & Bama, maybe Florida, GT should be clearly AHEAD of those other “class of schools”, but we are not instead we are loosing “key Recruits” to Vandy & Franklin(HC).

Mizzou & TAMU going to the SEC will end up hurting GT much more than it will hurt UGA recruiting-wise.

It seems that anytime you give a Recruit an option to place AHEAD of GT & CPJ, the Recruit usually takes the bait and places that option AHEAD of GT & CPJ.

Recruits that grow up in the State of GA. have no passion or connection to GT FB, and that is the main reason we/GT recruit so poorly, not Academics as most GT fans will lead you to believe.

Jokey,I think you confuse him not mentioning Tech’s academics with MC not mentioning it. That being said, he can go to any of these schools and then get his pharmacy degree, as long as he takes the required pre-pharmacy courses.

For those are worrying about Woods’ size, he projects to be a Garrison Smith type of player if he can’t play NT.

At GT he would be a huge get, at UGA he will simply add Depth for CTG among all the other great DL Recruits that CTG has helped to Recruit.

I wonder where are all the GT fans that LAUGHED at the hire of CTG and thought that GT had out-done UGA when they hired CAG to bring his version of the 3-4 to GT?

Signing more OL is important, but people look at the remaining OL on the board. They are some of the most highly rated recruits and for whatever reason, they are “waiting” to make a decision. You are not seeing the really good linemen signing right now, so for you impatient posters that keep bashing UGA, just put a sock in it. Coach Richt has saved a few spots for them. We will get some more good linemen, just chill-out…
