Shaun McGee: LB commits to UGA over Alabama

UGA-bound LB Shaun McGee

UGA-bound LB Shaun McGee

After earning a football scholarship at this past weekend’s “Dawg Night” prospect camp, Shaun McGee decided to accept it on Monday.

The 6-foot-2, 230-pound linebacker from Brookwood High School committed to UGA over Alabama among his 32 offers. He’s ranked as a 3-star by Rivals, and pledged to UGA after visiting the campus again on Monday.

“I just feel like it’s close to home here, but not only that – I felt like they’re family at Georgia … I got the family vibe,” McGee told the AJC.

“I love what they’re trying to do at Georgia. I’m just ready to get started. Not only that, but I can also get a world-class education here as well. It’s just a win-win situation, playing for an elite team at an elite school with good academics. I just feel like I can’t go wrong with Georgia.”

What helped UGA vs. Alabama? “Well, it’s just how I felt around the people at Georgia. I have a good relationship with all of the coaches, and most of the players I’ve met. I just felt more of a family vibe here.”

And what if UGA hadn’t offered only a few days ago? “Then obviously I would’ve had to make another decision. But I had my eye on Georgia for a while. I was waiting for them to pull the trigger. I had been up here a couple of times, and this visit kind of put the nail in the coffin.”

Brookwood coach Mark Crews on McGee committing to UGA: “I think Georgia is getting an outstanding player, a guy that’s developed into a really strong athlete. But there also getting an outstanding kid. One of things that we pride ourselves on at Brookwood is that we try to teach them more than just playing the game of football. We teach them character … Shaun is just an outstanding kid and an outstanding athlete.”

And picking UGA was not a difficult choice when they looked at all the important factors, according to Crews. “You can go to 15 different colleges, and they are all competitive, as far as the facilities. They all have the ‘wow’ factor because that’s how they recruit. You go to LSU or Alabama, and there are certain things that are attractive, things that have the ‘wow’ factor. But when you get down and look at Georgia, it’s 45 minutes from home and you’re playing in the SEC – the best league in the country. If you have the opportunity in front of 100,000 people every Saturday and you’re from the state of Georgia and you’re going to live in the state of Georgia, what’s the downside? There’s not a whole lot you can do to improve on that when life choices are concerned. Not just football, but the whole package.”

UGA now has 22 commitments for 2013.

Congrats to McGee! I’m sure he’ll be a DGD! However, I know we’re running a 3-4 but aren’t we getting pretty top heavy with LBs in this class? I’d really like to see some more linemen send in their verbals.

Hopefully having Langley’s teammate Mauger will help if not look for Fluker and Bostik i am surprised Bama missed out McGee and Jalen Ramsey .

Aww man… Bama lost another 3 star. We didn’t really want him anyway. He sucks (unless he flips to Bama, in which case he’ll be as good as 5 star Foster).
Serioulsy, good luck to the kid and good luck to UGA in the East. I hope we get to make up that game we had secheduled this year with the SEC Championship game.

Paris Bostick is committing to UGA tomorrow. Dawgs are done at safety. 8 to 10 will enroll early. After Bostick tomorrow, expect about 10 more commitments. Kelsey Griffin or Alvin Kamara could be next.

Of course you do ryan … you have no choice . When the UGA staff bungles roster management to the point that UGA STILL has to sign 32 players in one class … just to try and catch up … you have no choice but to “like” it :-)

Todd Grantham gets what he wants on Defense. The man is a great recruiter that has only scratched the service with what his Defense can do at Georgia.

Alabama is already 2 to 3 deep without giving up talent so why would he go to Bama. Saban was asked a few years ago why did he recruit a certain player when he already had plenty at that position and he stated: That was one less good player he would have to play against. I’m glad a few recruit’s are realizing that and when Georgia losses half their defense after this year they should take that as an indication of early playing time for them if they come to Georgia.

Crush is exactly right. If Richt would just oversign and then run enough off to get down to 85, we’d never have a class this large. Instead it would just be 27 to 29 like Bama’s every year.

@WDE96

It was a simple observation but one that requires prior reading ability to understand . You already had several post … by Dawgs … which I referenced . If you couldn’t see those post and keep up with my reference … that is a personal problem you need to get worked out .

Perhaps you could join one of those fine football “tutor” classes your chosen moniker is so famous for ( wait … that won’t work … many of your football players are illiterate when they “graduate” too :-) )

Another good pick up for the D. As I have said previously, Grantham needs to have input on recruiting and signing OL. We should not be in this situation year after year. We have 3 OL committed so far, and only 1 will/ should see the field. Why do we keep shooting ourselves in the foot with our OL recruiting/evaluating?
