QB Damon Mitchell commits to Georgia Tech (UPDATED)

QB Damon Mitchell (247sports)

QB Damon Mitchell (247sports)

Georgia Tech took the right angle in recruiting one of New Jersey’s top college football prospects.

QB Damon Mitchell of Cedar Creek (N.J.) High School committed to Georgia Tech after attending Yellow Jackets Football Camp on Saturday. The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder was also considering Iowa, Wisconson, and Rutgers, among his 18 football scholarship offers.

He was the second commitment of the day, along with Fayette County WR Antonio Messick.

Mitchell was ranked as a 3-star and No. 29 overall prospect out of New Jersey this year by 247sports. Many schools liked Mitchell as an “athlete.” Georgia Tech was one the first schools to offer Mitchell – and they made it at QB, his preferred position.

Last year was Mitchell’s first playing QB on the varsity level, with him rushing for 1,000 yards and passing for nearly 900 yards. He earned a lot of accolades for his physical style of play at safety.

“Georgia Tech was one of the first to offer at QB, and that really excited him early on,” Cedar Creek coach Tim Watson told the AJC. “Georgia Tech was on his shortlist, and when he got down there, he was blown away by the coaches, the campus and the academics.

“You could tell by his voice he was really feeling the place. He was excited about Georgia Tech, he called me and told me he was going to commit, and I supported him in his decision.

How will Mitchell do at Georgia Tech? “I think he’s going to be a great fit for the system at Georgia Tech,” Watson said. “I think he’s going to really surprise people with how well he throws the ball. He’s barely played the QB position, and he’s improved by leaps and bounds in such a short time.

“I think they see a kid with a ton of potential. Physically, he’s a tough runner, and I think his toughness shows on the defensive side of the ball. He strikes people well on the defensive side. On offense, he’s an elusive runner and physical as well. He’s not afraid of contract. He’s gained about 10-15 pounds of muscle, and we anticipate him being pretty hard to bring down this season. He’s shown to be a good leader. I think Georgia Tech is getting a special kid.”

…..and not good enough to play for the Dawgs….I am sure. Two star on Scout….but a player with potential to blossom into a really good one. Seems like Tech did get a Diamond in the Rough this weekend.

Tampa Gator, this article was posted at 7:13. It took you 4 minutes to jump on here and start hurling insults at Dawg fans. This is not even about Dawgball. Can’t you just congratulate the kid and go on with your life — or don’t you have one?

Thanks, Michael. The Jackets also just got a sleeper WR commitment, Antonio Messick, out of Fayette County.

Love your coach Techsters, but the guy can’t recruit for some reason. One of the best coaches in the southeast, but you are trying to compete with a bunch of also-rans. Looks like you’ll have to be happy beating UGA 1 out of every 9 or 10 years.

Hey Darian, you shouldn’t have placed a period after “fans.” That’s really just one sentence. But then again, I realize you never had any English classes at GT, so I won’t make a big deal out of it.

How many QBs wil be on scholarship when he gets there? Tech needs more QBs because of the greater chance of injury running the ball. Congrats Damon.

I have to agree with other posters that although this kid looks good, he certainly is not UGA level talent. At least not at this point. When Tech gets someone that every other school wants, then I will be impressed. Until then, they will have to just try to develop the people they do get and hope for the best. Awfully hard to beat UGA with half of their talent. It will happen now and then, but not often.

Only Bama, USC(w), and Texas are capable of bringing in a class with all 4/5-star kids. “Sleepers” are important. Also, something happened with Messick. He started as a true freshman and was invited to VT, UF, UGA, and Bama camps as a rising sophomore. Not sure if there’s an injury there or not, but something just doesn’t add up with the drop in interest.

maturity and depth chart strength is very important for Tech to compete. Seems Tech has arrived with the numbers and some depth, except at the D Line position. PJ will build a competitive program at Tech but it has to be strength in numbers and experience. This is what will be the dagger in my UGA foortball team 2012, great talent, no numbers. Ga Tech has as good a linebacking group as UGA this year.as starters. I believe Tech has a real chance to be a contender this year but V Tech is huge early.

Congratulations to the coaches at Tech for meeting the needs of the depth chart as needed in the 2013 class.

Game Changer: Can’t believe the Dogs have not gone after more OL recruits. The LT position has been particularly problemsome, with early injuries killing depth in the last few years. The lack of success of some of the tailbacks at UGA has to be put down to the OL at least as much as W. Ealy, et al.

Vandy has a commitment from a player name M Graves (sp), this kid is a three star and I am here to tell you he is as talented as any in the country at his position. As good as any. Do not pay attention to stars with these recruits, the QB from NJ is an excellant player, the young man from fayette county has great height and ability, could easily play several positions.

this article is about Tech. UGA football is a mess at this time. We got two commits this weekend and two of the prior commits are looking to jump ship from UGA. We add two and lose two, a Mess is a polite way to put things in Butts Mehre. Kimbrough is very good player but he will be hard to keep once he returns home. We need him badly at UGA.

Tech needs a QB with ability to read a defense just like always they get a kid that has to have a coach make the calls this is Pauls mo air force has way better QB guess they can’t handle a kid that’s smarter than the coaches

Damon, welcome to the Georgia Tech family! You can look forward to being a part of a solid group of teammates. Along with the coaches, they will support and teach you about the importance of academics, GT football, time management and most importantly, life after college football. (The GT program is demanding in all 4 areas. But if you are dedicated, you will do just fine in each of them.) Your time at GA Tech will be something you will always treasure and use of for the rest of your life.

OK, that is my sermon. Now, just have fun and enjoy playing football. Know that students, coaches, fans and alumni fully support you on and off the field.

Coached some great kids at William and Mary, who were a lot like the Tech players, good athletes with enough academic ability to compete in tough and very competitive environment – went from W & M to Ohio State where we had great athletes and a big enough school where the marginal student if he worked hard and attended class could stay eligible, many because of incredibly hard work became decent students and have become incredibly successful in adult life – my dad came from a family where his father had to go to work after the 8th grade – my dad largely because of athletic skills received a college education and then a Masters from Northwestern – retired as a VP of a major State university – Dad’s masters thesis was title was “Sports as a means to upward Mobility”

Sorry for the couple of typos in the last post. But funny how abusive Dawg fans can be towards Tech but become so defensive when someone says anything slightly against them….like “Let the Big Dawg Eat” who came on the Facyson story to….or course….rub in the loss of the recruit. But then Tech gets a commit immediately…..so I made the comment….”To the disappointment of several Dawg fans:……like “Let the Big Dawg Eat.”

Looks like a solid pick up. In order for the option to work, Tech much have a big physical QB. Otherwise, the physical beatings tend to be too much.

I do not normally address the negative comments. Over the years both schools have had their fair share of jerks. And ince our friend from Tampa felt a need to weigh in, we can include UF as well.

Personally believe that this is ‘hands down’ CPJ’S best recruiting class. More quality players that seem to be fitting upcoming needs quite well.

Tech fans and alumni should be very pleased with this class….
