UGA picks up 2 commitments at ‘Dawg Night’ (UPDATED)

New UGA DB commit Quincy Mauger with his mother

New UGA DB commit Quincy Mauger with his mother

Quincy Mauger surprised his mother by publicly committing to UGA before the start of Friday’s “Dawg Night” prospect camp.

Mauger secretly committed to UGA coach Mark Richt a week ago, picking the Bulldogs over Central Florida.

The 6-foot, 197-pound safety from Kell High School made it official with his commitment after driving early with his mother to Friday’s Dawg Night and meeting with school officials.

“Coach Richt was very happy,” Mauger told the AJC. “You know, I kind of made a pre-commitment a week ago. I just wanted to surprise my mom today. I had been doing my research. I told Coach Richt that I wanted to be a part of the Bulldogs family, and make it a big surprise for my mom. It worked out great.”

Later after the completion of Dawg Night, UGA picked up another commitment — Tim Kimbrough of Indianapolis.  He’s ranked as a 4-star and the nation’s No. 3 inside linebacker by 247sports.com. Kimbrough announced it in Twitter:

Committed to Georgia today. I’m a Dawg!!! #LetsGoooo

Back to Mauger (who is unranked by Rivals): He earned a football scholarship offer at last month’s Mark Richt Camp and may help UGA with his heralded teammate, Kell cornerback Brendan Langley. Langley, who is a top UGA recruiting priority, tweeted congratulations to Mauger on Friday.

“I’m definitely going to see if I can persuade Brendan to come our way and be the next Georgia commit,” Mauger said. “Whether or not he comes to Georgia, I wish the best for him. He needs to join the Dawg side.”

Mauger is projected to play free or strong safety at UGA.

“I love the coaching staff at Georgia,” Mauger said. “They are very well-connected with the kids. I got to sit down with an engineering professor, and we got to talking some about my decision and everything I needed to know when it comes to engineering. I’m going to major in engineering.

“I picked Georgia because it has everything I need to be successful with academics and on the football. It’s a great opportunity, and I took it”

nothing wrong in picking up a db commit….especially considering all 4 starters are seniors.

If engineering is your chosen field, then UGA is to place to be. I really don’t know of another in-state school offering an engineering degree.

game changer,

let’s consider 2 possibilities
1. maybe the kid is under the radar
2. maybe the coaches are issuing more offers as to avoid another debacle of only getting 17 kids in next class

I am sure the kid can play a little Randall because he did have other D1 offers but it does appear that the kid being offered by UGA may have some influence for his friend to commit there as well.

i took my B.S. in Agricultural Engineering in 1970, and the only Ag.Eng. school ranked higher than UGa was Iowa State at that time. Now that UGa has a purely Engineering School, it is my understanding that it also ranks very highly. The year I graduated 80% of our graduates passed the Engineer in Training Exam whereas only 33% of Tech’s graduates passed the very same exam.
Congratulations to this young man in his choice of academics.

Sure, but that was about how to change the oil in a tractor. Tech graduates probably did not have much time to practice changing oil in a tractor. The “Calculatorus” thing probably.

I’m glad for you and Iowa State. GATA

Became a die hard dawg fan in the 60’s and will die a dawg fan. I do however have one question. Are the dawgs going to sign any top rated players at their position with the 10 or 12 remaining slots they have? Sorry, but the only thing that I am impressed with about this group so far, is the numbers. We would be ragging GT to no end about out recruiting schools like C. Florida for recruits and hear we are, patting ourselves on the back, for doing the very same and it ain’t the first time this off season so far. Seems like we have a number of commit is, not even on the board for some of the big powers. For once I would like to see a much higher rated player come on board. We have maybe 10 or so opening left. At this rate we have our allotment of recruits before the season even starts. Problem is, is that it will be high in quantity, but not quality.
