DB Tolando Cleveland commits to Georgia Tech over Mississippi State

Georgia Tech DB commit Tolando Cleveland (HillgroveFootball.org)

Tolando Cleveland, a speedy cornerback from Hillgrove High School, committed at Georgia Tech camp on Friday night.

The 6-foot, 180-pound Cleveland also had a football scholarship offer from Mississippi State, and was scheduled to go to Wake Forest later this weekend. Cleveland is commitment No. 11 for Georgia Tech’s 2013 recruiting class.

“Georgia Tech is a good place for Tolando,” Hillgrove coach David Ironside told the AJC. “I’m sure being close to home helped Georgia Tech, and having two Hillgrove players [QB Synjyn Days and LB Jabari Hunt-Days] already on the team there.”

Ironside said he was informed of the commitment by Georgia Tech assistant Brian Bohannon. “They’re really excited about Tolando. We felt like Georgia Tech would be a good fit all along. When Tolando went to camp on Friday, he felt the same way.”

How good of an athlete is Cleveland? We asked how he compared to Kenyan Drake, the AJC Super 11 selection who signed with Alabama last February.

“Kenyan is a little bigger, and probably a little better on offense,” Ironside said. “But with what Tolando does, he’s really, really good at – as a cover guy and tackling in the open field. He’s as good as we’ve ever had doing those things.”

GEORGIA TECH’S CLASS OF 2013

  1. RB Travis Custis,6-0, 212 Lovejoy HS
  2. RB Donovan Wilson, 6-0, 215, Dublin, Ohio
  3. OL Shamire Devine, 6-7, 331, Tri-Cities HS
  4. DT Darius Commissiong, 6-2, 295, Forestville, Md.
  5. OG Jeremi Hall, 6-5, 350, Tri-Cities HS
  6. DE-OLB Kevin Robbins, 6-4, 240, Forestville, Md.
  7. OL Chris Griffin, 6-6, 265, Crawfordville, Fla.
  8. K Harrison Butker, 6-3, 185, Westminster
  9. DB John Marvin, 6-1, 190, Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
  10. DE Justin Akins, 6-4, 245, Jackson HS
  11. DB Tolando Cleveland, 6-0, 180, Hillgrove HS

Congrats to the young man on getting a scholarship offer to GTech and making his commitment. @ SMART your comments reveal the ignorance of a person that has never personally met CMR and just makes comments from afar because he has had success against the team you root for. My kids go to school with his kids and I have seen him up close and personal and CMR is the real deal as a husband, father, church member, and coach. Take the hater glasses off every once in awhile.

@ SMART – when you are the football coach @ UGA it’s kinda hard for you to go anywhere w/o it attracting a crowd and a reporter or two. However, that doesn’t mean that his heart is not right and his motives for good works are not as pure as yours. Real christians spend more time trying to help other people and less time questioning the motives of other people who are on the same side.

@A person smart enough to know I only said that because in today’s world so many time people are wrapped up in our selves and, forget to consider other people. I for one am guilty of that and, while I am trying to be a better person I take the time to salute the people that do what I don’t.

From what I have heard from recruiting analyst Cleveland is one of those gems schools are just starting to notice. He plays both sides but GT is recruiting him as a corner. He really likes GT and wants to go there and I will take a kid like that all day.

Besides being a great person from a great family, he was the best corner at the elite camp yesterday and his “measurables” were off the chart coming in at 6′0″ tall, 180 lbs, and then he ran the 40 in 4.41.

Word is he may just be this year’s Francis Kallon. People have just started to notice Tolando because he, too, is somewhat a freak athlete, and he’s actually played a couple of positions so people didn’t have a lot of film on him at one spot so he didn’t “jump out” in any one game. However, as film began to be put togther and reviewed, coaches started noticing him all over the place, etc, and the lights started going on. Transcripts are terrific, and like I said, he was the best corner at the elite camp this weekend and he measured off the chart. Great get for the Jackets. I know the Days brothers love him…

I totally understand being supportive of your team/school but so many of you guys seem to like every recruit that commits to Tech. Every recruit that we’ve never heard of must have “slipped throughout the cracks” or is “about to start getting recruited hard”. I don’t like this pick up because we have very limited scholarship numbers and more talented guys considering GT. It’s a reason why he wasn’t that sought after, I hope he proves me completely wrong and becomes a star and big difference maker for GT but I just don’t see it. Stop being fine with good enough and demand more out of your team/school people.

seniors in high school that are playing football this year.

1. it is idiotic to even think that every single one of them has been evaluated thoroughly by half a dozen recruiting sites.

2, it is even more idiotic to think that the guys from these recruiting sites who more often than not have marginal evaluating skills can accurately evaluate each and every player.

3. i have yet to see any combine measure heart or work ethic.

4. even the nfl has a difficult time evaluating talent from a talent pool that is far smaller than 250,000 players.

5. teenagers are still maturing physically and a player that looks like a world beater at 16 may end up being average as the players around him catch up physically. red shirting in high school often skews the perception of the talent of a player.

all i know is we got a player who does not talk the face book trash that an isaiah crowell did. we got a player with outstanding grades. despite all the physical gifts that isaiah crowell had. his lack of character absolutely ruined what could have been a stellar career.

so in hind sight, if you had only two choices and one recruit which one would you take? i pass on the cancer and choose tolando cleveland.

bottom line is we got a player our coaches evaluated up close and personal.. he was one of the top performers among over 300 candidates from players all over the se, he ran a 4.4 forty, he had a vertical leap of 33 inches. he was 6ft tall and 180 pounds. he was a top student and came from a great family background. he was recruited by some of the top scholastic programs in the country…. the service academies, rice…. etc. he wants to be at gt.

so i am going to be ticked off because half a dozen semi talented recruiting gurus never had the chance to evaluate him? and he is a 2 star? ARE YOU NUTS?

sounds like a perfect pick to me.
