Travis Custis: Georgia Tech RB commit from Lovejoy HS

  • Prospect: Travis Custis, running back, Lovejoy High School, Class of 2013
RB Travis Custis is "a step faster" than NFL RB Tashard Choice, according to his coach (AJC)

RB Travis Custis is "a step faster" than NFL RB Tashard Choice, according to his coach (AJC)

  • Colleges: Committed to Georgia Tech (April 2, 2012) over offers from Miami, Tennessee, Clemson, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, Virginia and Mississippi State, among  others … Was the first commitment for Georgia Tech’s 2012 recruiting class
  • Why Georgia Tech? “Coach [Paul Johnson] and the rest of the Georgia Tech coaches have really shown us a lot of love, and we feel like we can come here and make a difference. We liked Georgia Tech, and the other schools we were really looking at were starting to fill up at running back … so we thought ‘Why wait any longer?’” – his father, Travis Custis, Sr.
  • Vitals: 6-foot, 212 pounds. Has 2.9 GPA and plans a career in Sports Medicine.
  • Recruiting rankings: 3-star and No. 37 running back in nation by  ESPN, 3-star and nation ‘s No. 41 running back by 247sports, 3-star and nation’s No. 74 running back by Scout, 3-star by Rivals.
  • Things to know: In the 2011 season, Custis helped lead Lovejoy to the Class AAAA state championship game (won by Tucker), rushing for 1,839 yards and 30 touchdowns … Broke the Lovejoy school records for single-season and career rushing yards, previously held by Tashard Choice, who starred at Georgia Tech and for the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys
  • They said it: “Travis has broken all of Tashard’s records and he’s a step faster than Tashard. They have very similar styles of running. Tashard is a strong inside runner who can also hurt you outside. It’s the same with Travis. Travis is a power runner. He’s a slasher but also has great breakaway speed. He’s an Adrian Peterson-type of runner. That’s his style … he can run through a tackle or around a tackle. Travis has got that extra gear of speed. Every time he touches the ball, there’s a chance he can take it to the house.” — Lovejoy coach Al Hughes

Whoa. The athlete side sounds great. The student part sounds a little sketchy.
I hope he can make the grades and give GT a run for the money.

“The SEC has back up defensive tackles that run faster”

That’s only because they grew up running from the law!

The SEC also had I. Crowell, Jasper Sanks, Caleb King, Waushaun Ealey, Odell Thurman, Tony Coles, Mike Mercer, and Kiante Tripp (just off the top of my head).

What was your point again?

Right where GT ends up every year…between 37th and 74th best team in D1 NCAA Football. Silly Yellow Bugs, Football is for real Colleges. Dont you ever forget that “We Run This State”. And we will run it again this year. CPJ needs to pack-up that triple threat (where is the threat BTW) option and go back to the D2 little boys division so he can win!

Can’t take this guy down with an arm tackle, He is deceptively slippery for a good sized back. Impressive offer list…

I believe this blog subject has already been posted (April 2, 2012) by the AJC staff. Must be a really slow “day” on the sports news day, huh. Why did we need to rehash this young man?? Just asking?

charlie Hayes…You seem like an awesome guy. I’m sure your wife thinks your great as well. That’s the best you’ve got to offer. By saying “We run this state” , you are letting on to the kind of person you are. No go read a book or spend some time with your kids.

@GT2012fan: That is freaking hilarious!! No joke. I’m a huge UGA fan, but gotta give credit where credit is due:).

@Nick Saban giggles…: 1. This is a GT blog not a UGA blog. Nowhere is UGA even mentioned. Moron. 2. If you are a bama fan, be careful big guy. You know the old saying, the bigger they are the harder they fall. We aren’t even rivals. We play twice every 6-7 years. Why do you even care what we do?

The young man looks like a good it, if he approachs the ability and toughness of Tashard Choice he’s going to have very productive career on the flats.

As to Snoody, he has the speed for certain. Now he’s had a year to learn the offense and his responsibilties as an A back in this offense. I look forward to seeing him on the field!

UGA will lose to Sc, Auburn, Fla., and MIzzu plus one more!
How did that number 1 runningback workout for you? How many preseason #1 have UGA won?
How many players and prof. will be in jail before the season begins? These are “Dwag Days of our lives!” lol

Not Disappointed!

Great pickup for the Jackets..If he runs like Choice he will be killer. Choice was an ACC killer and the Dawgs rarely even touched him. Of course we scorch the Dawgs for 300 to 400 yards on the ground in every game so that doesn’t mean much.Has Crowell enrolled at
Bma yet?

Great looking running back. This guy will definitely get a shot at the league if he keeps his grades in check and stays out of trouble. Saw this kid run in a few games last yr. he is a hard nose runner who does not come down on first contact

Pretty good offer list, which is much more important than his “star rating” imo. However – 2.9 GPA at Lovejoy? I thought all tech athletes were rocket scientists? At least we admit georgia has its share of idiots on the football team.

Charlie Hayes: You RUIN this state, not run it. And lets not forget about Fred (It just went through my hands) Gibson and , my main man, Quincy Carter when we’re talking about the SEC “greats”.
Quincy handed two wins to GA Tech and then fooled Dallas into becoming their QB for about 20 minutes.
