Top UGA recruit will visit other schools, including Tennessee, USC and Nebraska

Naim Mustafaa, the 4-star linebacker who committed to UGA over Georgia Tech last month, will attend Friday’s “Dawg Night” prospect camp.

And after Dawg Night, Mustafaa will head directly from UGA for an overnight recruiting trip to Tennessee.

“I want to go up there and check it out; I have a good relationship with the Tennessee coaches,” Mustafaa told the AJC on Tuesday night.

The 6-foot-4, 235-pounder from Alpharetta High School said he remains committed to UGA but plans to take all five official visits as a senior.

“I’m going to use all five,” Mustafaa said. “I’m going to fly to Cali to see USC. I gave them my word that I would visit there. I’m also going to try to get out to Nebraska for a game. So it will be those two, and another one – Oklahoma State.

“Oklahoma State, they were one of my first offers. They were my No. 1 school at one point, when I only had a few offers. The only way for me to get over there, because it’s so far away, would be an official visit. I promised them I would come.”

When asked to put a percentage on his commitment to UGA, Mustafaa replied, “I couldn’t put a percentage on it. That’s where I want to go. It’s pretty strong. It took a lot for me to commit there, so I doubt I will have any change of mind.

“Still, I plan to go on these official visits, have fun, and go with an open mind.”

Mustafaa is the son of former Georgia Tech star Najee Mustafaa, who played seven seasons in the NFL.

Wow, if Nkemdiche said this, it would be on SportsCenter. While I don’t like kids visiting other schools if they are committed, many of them do it. Nothing new.

It’s ironic that the kid is living up to his promises to visit other schools but not to his commitment. College football is going down the pooper pretty quickly, and for all of those who used to enjoy it, sorry, but the game you knew is going, going….

Najee Mustafaa, birth name Reggie Rutland, (born June 20, 1964 in East Point, Georgia) is a former professional American football player who played safety for seven seasons for the Minnesota Vikings, Cleveland Browns, and Oakland Raiders. He played collegiately for the Georgia Tech football team. On October 10, 1993 – he set the club record for longest interception (97 yds).

=======================================

Bah … IF this person was what they pretended to be no wonder Nkemdiche is confused on how to act . The adults are sillier than the kids apparently .

It would take a little more than a recruit simply saying you were going to visit several schools to cause substantial comments about how they are handling their .recruitment . (And Nkemdiche added far more than just a “little” more … in multiple forums besides the AJC . ) Stop being so drama queen melodramatic and figure it out .

At this point Tide fans can afford a good chuckle or two . The program is making the players more than any individual makes the program .

As I stated before … IF UGA actually managed to pry Reuben away from his destiny … it wouldn’t make any more difference for the Tide than it did when the Dawgs managed to divert Isiah Crowell off to the Richto Clown Factory . The only person who really gets hit is the player ….

Probably end up at Tenneesse, or USC.

There is only one percentage that equals committed, and that is 100%. Anything less is something else.

With that said, I have to give Mustafaa some credit. At least he is going to get the full value of his 5 visits by seeing the country. I have to wonder about some of these other guys who claim they’re already committed somewhere and then use up their 5 visits going to see schools only a couple of hours away from home.

If I had the chance to go through the process as a big time recruit, I would use my 5 official visits to go see USC (the real one), Hawaii, Miami, Notre Dame and Alaska, then commit to UGA.

Hey Bull Terrior – you are yet another naive UGA fan. No way this kid ends up at UGA, not after he sees real programs like USC, Nebraska and OKState – why in the world would he throw his career away by going to UGA. Athens is a graveyard for football careers, except for those who are super talented and get out after 3 years – Stafford, AJ, etc. All the others get there, flounder, get arrested and end up in jail before they even get started. Sad program.

I am not surprised that some of our brethren on here have no idea how the recruiting game is played these days. Whether you and I like it or not (and I don’t) many of these young men commit early to ensure that they have an offer just in case something happens to them during their junior or senior year of high school. They still take their visits because they can get fed well and fawned over in a way that many of them have never experienced. Then after they have made their visits and after their final season in high school is completed they either stick with their original commitment or flip. If you are a fan of a school where the coach has a “no visit after commitment” policy, then your school is going to consistently miss out on most of the top athletes.

I wonder what VINCE DOOLEY thinks about this? As if I care. Apparently after spending countless hours getting to know Isiah Crowell, the old man determined Crowell was a “Bad Apple” and, of course, just had to go public with it. Dooley is just a symptom of a much larger disease up there. There are countless athletic board members and UGA fans just like this guy. Crowell should have been given the opportunity to prove his innocence BEFORE being dismissed. That’s the issue DOOLEY, UGA and, hopefully, a Civil Rights lawyer for Crowell should be addressing. 31 friggin years. Is it any wonder?

@bucket…you get it…..the kids have to lockdown a free ride at the favorite school or in many cases their #2 since they didn’t get the call they wanted from #1. Forget that a school has 25 schollys to offer for it’s about need and need only. Bame needs two LB’s then Nick offers 15-20 of the top Backers then he takes the best 2 HE CAN GET. You don’t just take players that say YES you take NEEDS 1st. If you’re a LBer then you see only 2 spots at Bama not 25 thus it’s tuff to get where you really want to go sometime. I use Bama as an example only since it’s the same at most schools if you’re actually recruiting on need. If you’re taking just Yes then you’re probably not a very good team and have a roster full of folks you don’t need.

I’m sure DOOLEY and DAWG fans won’t have a problem if he de-commits. “WE DON”T WANT SOME DANG MUSLIM PLAYING FOR THEM DAWGS.” “Good riddance to that there boy. 1. If Georgia did not want “some danged Muslim” playing for UGA, why go to the trouble of offering a valuable scholarship to Mustafaa? Don’t give him a ship, and he won’t be playing for the Dogs.

2. Have you ever heard of Musa Smith? Muslim running back for Richt, and he apparently enjoyed his stay.
Again, if UGA did not want “some danged Muslim” playing, they would not have bothered to recruit him.

3. Finally, for the sake of all the good Bama posters on here, please tell me you did not attend the University of Alabama. It is embarrassing enough with your handle, how much worse for them if it turned out you actually went to school there.

People read WAY too much into these things. If I am a kid who cannot afford to travel (heck, even if I could), I would take all 5 free vacations, even if I knew where I was going. Plus, you never know if a place will just viscerally grab you. Good for him and every recruit who takes his full visits.

That said, please come to UGA.

MC,
In your opinion is every verbally committed recruit a “Top Recruit?” That is the way you report it. Are you simply misinformed or is it lowest common denominator reporting (which you do so well)? After all, while Mustafaa is a good player, he is by no means a ‘top recruit’ to UGA this year, especially considering the OLB talent we have. J. Jones, Stripling, J. Dawson, JHC, Floyd, Washington, Wilson, Vasser, Deloach. We arguably have the best outside linebackers and rush ends in college football. I would love to hear a response………..
