Top Auburn recruit to visit UGA for Dawg Night

One of the nation’s top inside linebackers will visit UGA for Dawg Night.

And we’re not talking about Reuben Foster.

Trey Johnson, who has been committed to Auburn since last summer, will attend the UGA prospect camp on July 13 with a couple of his teammates from Central Gwinnett High School.

UGA will get the chance at Dawg Night to court longtime Auburn LB commit Trey Johnson of Central Gwinnett HS (247sports.com)

UGA will get the chance at Dawg Night to court longtime Auburn LB commit Trey Johnson of Central Gwinnett HS (247sports.com)

“It’s just to give Georgia a look,” Central Gwinnett coach Todd Wofford said. “They want him to come over, and Trey wants to get a feel for how they are as coaches and see what they have to say.

“Trey is just making sure he is covering all his bases, just in case something comes up. He saw how the Ted Roof thing worked last year, the business side of college football. Trey is just trying to take care of his side.”

The 6-foot-2, 218-pound Johnson committed to Auburn over FSU, Florida, Clemson and Tennessee in part because of the presence of Roof, who was Auburn’s defensive coordinator at the time but left for UCF and is now at Penn State. Roof had a special connection to Central Gwinnett because he played high school football there.

What’s really interesting is that UGA has yet to offer a football scholarship to Johnson, who is ranked as the No. 5 inside linebacker in the nation by 247sports.com.

Why not? “[UGA linebackers coach Kirk Olivadotti] didn’t get a chance to evaluate him back at the time he committed,” Wofford said. “He had just gotten hired. He wants a chance to meet Trey, which he hasn’t had the chance yet. Trey is going to give him that chance. He wants to meet [Olivadotti].”

Will UGA offer Johnson at Dawg Night? “I don’t think they would want him to come by there if not … but then again, I’ve seen crazier things. Trey has absolutely nothing to lose by going over there. Worst case, he goes to support a couple of his [Central Gwinnett] teammates at camp.”

This will be interesting. Johnson says because he grew up in Georgia, UGA was actually his original favorite school – ahead of Auburn. But he didn’t get an early offer from the Bulldogs and fell in love with Auburn.

What if UGA offers now? “I don’t know if it would make a difference,” Johnson said. “We’ve just got to wait and see …  I would have to think hard about it if Georgia offered.”

While Johnson says he is “100-percent” committed to Auburn, he plans to take all five official visits as a senior. He intends to take recruiting trips to Penn State (where Roof is now coaching), Notre Dame, USC, Miami, and Auburn.

“I’m 100 percent with Auburn,” Johnson said. “They already know I’m going to see what’s out there, to make sure my commitment is 100 percent and Auburn is where I want to be. The Auburn fans are understanding. They always back you 100 percent and none of them say anything negative about [visiting other schools].”

The word “commitment” should be replaced in the recruiting world. It’s just meaningless. Maybe “preference” or something similar would be better. It’s a joke when any athlete “commits” to a school. So, I hope he switches his “preference” to Georgia. GO DAWGS………..

I hope between Olivadotti and Grantham they are impressed enough to offer and Johnson is impressed enough to flip to Georgia but I think with him committing so early to Auburn wasn’t because he liked Auburn so much but that he liked Roof that much. That being said I think he will either go to Georgia or Penn State come signing day.

I don’t blame recruits looking around if the variables that caused him to pick a certain school in the first place changes. In this case the coach that recruited him left. That would be a good reason for him to make sure he wasn’t picking Auburn because of the coach.

Dont know what will happen with the visit, but this kid is by far the best linebacker in Georgia, probably the southeast… He is head and shoulders above Foster and any other LB in terms of diagnosing, shedding and making the play. UGA slept big time on this kid….

This Mr. Johnson is smart to be looking to switch to a quality team like Dawgs instead a Awful Burn after Cheese Dip had the shootout at the AU coral. Coach Cheese Dip desrves the blaming for creating a thug culture with 180K Clams Newton and cheap shotting artist Nick Farely. Staying home and playing for Christian Dawgs is right thing to do istead of traitoring on state.

I understand needing to see certain prospects in person. Maybe you need to verify height or a 40 time, but the #5 inside LB in the NATION? LOL If your coaching staff can’t look at film on an elite prospect and decide immediately that he deserves an offer… never mind. Thank god Richt has that extension.

Bama Fan#2… don’t believe everything you read. RF recently stated he tells others what they want to hear just to get them off his back. Either way…. Bama signed the #1 rated LB class in 2011. While his decision to change his commitment would mean a hit in the recruiting rankings, it will have very limited affect on Bama’s success in the future. Roll Tide!!!

He wants to play in a 4-3 D like AU runs while UGA runs a 3-4. No big deal he’ll stick with AU but I’m sure we’ll hear again how we let one of 200 recruits slip out of Ga.

UGA doesn’t just throw out non-committable offers like every other school in the SEC (yeah, I’m looking at you Bama, Ole Miss, and Vandy in particular) They have to bring them in to evaluate first to make sure they don’t embarrass themselves and pull the offer later.

You’re probably right UGA doesn’t just throw out offers to anyone first requirement is you have to pass the thug test. You know you can’t spell thug without uga. Maybe if you’re real good you can get brother a scholly too and if you’re a 5 star you’re baby sister is not out of the question.

With Crowell the Buffoon gone, UGA’s salary cap is a lot higher now, so I doubt if Auburn can match UGA’ s offer. If it’s about the money, Johnson will flip.

The chosen one, RG, is the one that needs to leave……he needs to retire……his days have come and gone……needs to lose 100 lbs and find another occupation…..not the RC he used to be……seems burned out…..if you notice, rarely do the recruits mention his name now…..doesn’t get on the road…..how you heard Reuben Foster or Trey Johnson mention his name and countless others!!!

Fact is UGA needs a lot of every type player! You can sign 40 this year if you can get 15 enrolled by Jan. It is very funny to see the comment about Richt and staff have to get the recruit on campus 1st before an offer…you jest right. You offer every decent players best friend and you have to get talented folks on campus…OK 210 # inside LB…Yep that will work in the SEC no doubt. This kid locked down a scholly early and nobody should blame the kid for doing just that even if it was a thug U in lee county.

Henry is in the Bama fold but will not commit until much later as asked by Nick. We have two great RB’s already and the Jones kid is the best of the best (the Bama staff). Tenpenny could be a flipper so Nick is bringing in another RB from Virginia hoping to have a backup plan if Tenpenny goes to the higs due to the number of RB’s and youth at Bama. Saban has backup plans to the backup plans where Richt and staff has missing man plans.

Foster could be a UGA guy for sure but he could also stick with Bama. JMO but Nick should call the kid and free him of his commit so he can look and have fun knowing he will have a spot no later than the last weekend before NSD. Come Friday before that day all bets are off and that has been the case since Nick arrived. Roll Tide and Happy 4 to all GT,UF,FSU,UT,Clem,LSU, and UGA fans. Frack AU.

rhall55, if somehow grantham remains at UGA after 2012 than yes the 3 – 4 will still exist, I dont see it at this time.

Rueben foster is a true number one middle linebacker out of the 4 -3. In the 3 – 4 he will not thrive as well. Our linebackers got smoked last year against good competition..

I dont see why Rueben Foster would want to play in the 3 – 4 for any college team. I realize the excitement of Alabama offer and prestige but that is not the place for Rueben either.
