Top Auburn recruit to visit UGA for Dawg Night

One of the nation’s top inside linebackers will visit UGA for Dawg Night.

And we’re not talking about Reuben Foster.

Trey Johnson, who has been committed to Auburn since last summer, will attend the UGA prospect camp on July 13 with a couple of his teammates from Central Gwinnett High School.

UGA will get the chance at Dawg Night to court longtime Auburn LB commit Trey Johnson of Central Gwinnett HS (247sports.com)

UGA will get the chance at Dawg Night to court longtime Auburn LB commit Trey Johnson of Central Gwinnett HS (247sports.com)

“It’s just to give Georgia a look,” Central Gwinnett coach Todd Wofford said. “They want him to come over, and Trey wants to get a feel for how they are as coaches and see what they have to say.

“Trey is just making sure he is covering all his bases, just in case something comes up. He saw how the Ted Roof thing worked last year, the business side of college football. Trey is just trying to take care of his side.”

The 6-foot-2, 218-pound Johnson committed to Auburn over FSU, Florida, Clemson and Tennessee in part because of the presence of Roof, who was Auburn’s defensive coordinator at the time but left for UCF and is now at Penn State. Roof had a special connection to Central Gwinnett because he played high school football there.

What’s really interesting is that UGA has yet to offer a football scholarship to Johnson, who is ranked as the No. 5 inside linebacker in the nation by 247sports.com.

Why not? “[UGA linebackers coach Kirk Olivadotti] didn’t get a chance to evaluate him back at the time he committed,” Wofford said. “He had just gotten hired. He wants a chance to meet Trey, which he hasn’t had the chance yet. Trey is going to give him that chance. He wants to meet [Olivadotti].”

Will UGA offer Johnson at Dawg Night? “I don’t think they would want him to come by there if not … but then again, I’ve seen crazier things. Trey has absolutely nothing to lose by going over there. Worst case, he goes to support a couple of his [Central Gwinnett] teammates at camp.”

This will be interesting. Johnson says because he grew up in Georgia, UGA was actually his original favorite school – ahead of Auburn. But he didn’t get an early offer from the Bulldogs and fell in love with Auburn.

Will UGA offer TJ at Dawg Night?

What if UGA offers now? “I don’t know if it would make a difference,” Johnson said. “We’ve just got to wait and see …  I would have to think hard about it if Georgia offered.”

While Johnson says he is “100-percent” committed to Auburn, he plans to take all five official visits as a senior. He intends to take recruiting trips to Penn State (where Roof is now coaching), Notre Dame, USC, Miami, and Auburn.

“I’m 100 percent with Auburn,” Johnson said. “They already know I’m going to see what’s out there, to make sure my commitment is 100 percent and Auburn is where I want to be. The Auburn fans are understanding. They always back you 100 percent and none of them say anything negative about [visiting other schools].”

gtbob hits the nail on the head:

The 25 and younger UGA children of Alums have not ever experienced anything good regarding football. What they have seen is failure and the last few years total embarrassment. The biggest opportunity in 25 years was 08 Alabama and what a stomping we got. No one can really point out a great year or national respect for UGA. When you rank around 5th or lower out of 12 sec football teams almost every year for 25 years what would anyone expect. UGA students had tailgating taken away and the team is not respected by the students because of thier actions on and off the field, WHY WOULD UGA STUDENTS OR FANS CARE, stay the course, hahaha.

I don’t think…other than you….anyone is too worried about writing skills on this blog. I type my thoughts quickly….sometimes with a lot of typos…..and never proofread what I submit. I expect most others do the same. If you want to evaluate English and writing skills….go teach high school or college.

In tribute to our beloved martyred Saint Jan Kemp, let’s all bow our heads for a few moments of silent prayer. Thirty years ago, this courageous young lady risked everything to expose the corruption and academic fraud instigated by Vince Dooley, sleazy practices that continue to this day under Mark Richt.

And now, let us all pray for Saint Jan…

I believe….if you read the AJC blogs a lot……I was a big Georgia fan growing up in south Georgia….and my sister went to Georgia (my brother and I have forgiven her…but it took some time)……and I remain a Dawg fan unless they are playing Florida. But on the last Saturday in October……I am strickly Gator….and all Dawg fans know it. Go Gators. Go SEC. Go Dawgs (don’t let my sister know I posted that).

Report is that Harrow didn’t make his grades and is academically ineligible. That is another wonderful Carver HS grad that didnt make it. Between Jasper Sanks, Deion Bonner, Isaiah Crowell and Quintavious Harrow that is four out of five that have bombed out from Carver. Only Jarvis Jones grew up and made something of himself. I can understand other conference’s supporters belittling the SEC, but supposed fans of SEC schools that post on here downplaying the winning of an SEC football championship does not make sense to me. Outside of winning a NC in football or men’s basketball, what accomplishment in college athletics excels winning an SEC football title? I think it is a tremendous feat. That is just my opinion though. Others may think a NC in baseball, golf, swimming, tennis tops it, but not me. (And UGA has plenty of national titles in the so-called minor sports.)

@Mr. SEC, ( hope in your case it stands for Securities and Exchange Commission, nothing sports related). I stand by my assessment of TJ. RF is an excellent linbacker and I hope he pays in the NFL one day. Ive seen film on both of them and as of today, TJ is much better. Coach Flowers at Troup allowed RF to freelance and make plays….Check RF highlight films, he primarily unblocked.. TJ, in my opinion, does a better job at point of attack…

As far as the recruiting analyst go, the weatherman is far more accurate than these guys…I have very little confidence in their ratings. Its all about measurables. TJ played at about 205 last season and if you dont think that hurt his rating you gotta stop licking windows….

GTBob doesn’t think winning an SEC football championship amounts to much. I think even non-SEC fans recognize the SEC as by far the strongest conference. To win the title is meaningful to most, though not to some Tech fans, which I can understand.

Trey Johnson

Obviously, he is a fine prospect, but I think saying he is better than Foster puts one in a distinct minority, and using the term “much better” seems like a reach. A high school coach of over 30 years in the state said RF is the best defensive player he has seen in this state in that time period.

@Football Coach — You ‘re right about some of the assessments concerning Rueben.
The kid looks amazing — un-blocked!!
Rueben could have handled the “situation” at Troup better. @ the end of the day, Coach Flowers was guilty of illegally recruiting Players to Troup.
Hell, Quan Bray, a Barn signee from last year, transferred within Troup Co from Callaway HS to Troup HS to play for his Sr Season.

Of course I’d like Rueben @ Bama. Their isn’t a better Coach in the Country to mold Foster than Saban. However, from day 1 with Rueben, I just can’t help but have flash-backs of Trey Blackmon. Blackmon looked just as good on tape if not better than Rueben!! I respect what Tuberville did @ the Barn. He tried his best to straighten out Blackmon, but sometimes enough is enough!! I respect Richt’s decision to boot Crow(finally).
If Rueben de-commits from Bama, this is one Bama supporter that will not lose sleep over it & I’ve said many times I’d take Rueben over RN. I have a feeling Rueben is going to be trouble, for whomever gets him.
As for UGA — Aren’t y’all tired of these HS kids “running” your program before they even get their?? The “dream” team…..now the “fantastic” 5!!
Who’s running that Program in Athens anyway?

If the winner of the SEC title wasn’t in the running for the MNC do you really think anyone outside of SEC country would care who won? No they wouldn’t. There are no Ohio St, or USC fans sitting on the edge of their seats watching the SEC championship. Just like SEC fans don’t care who wins the Big 10 or PAC 12.

@ Game Changer – please stop saying “we” when referring to UGA. You may be a really good person and a credit to humanity in whatever you do in life, but you are not a fan of the University of Georgia and to keep insisting that you are is a disservice to UGA and your own credibility. This article is good news for UGA that a top lb is coming to Dawg Night to check out UGA and to listen to what the coaches have to say to him. He is even from Gwinnett County no less, and virtually everyone of your posts on this topic have been negative toward UGA. IF you are a real fan you will start directing the negative thoughts to the people who can make changes (like the rest of us real UGA fans) and stop spewin anti-UGA venom on these blogs.

@GTBob now that wasn’t a biased site was it? So called facts mixed in with a number of under-handed shots at Alabama. Then to top it off the author stated they researched the facts and failed to mention that Bama played Tech 79-84. Bob I expected more out of you…really I did. So with that Tech biased article still the question looms. Why would you tear up all of your GT gear if GT got back in the SEC? I think the answer was in the article and Bobby Dodd supplied it. Quote “I just could not compete with those damn state universities. And Auburn is just as easily a state university. They could take these same boys we couldn’t take, who wanted to come and play for me. And it just broke me down. I couldn’t beat’em. You can just outcoach’em some of the time, brother. Better football players will beat you.” Therein lies the true reason Tech left the SEC. No more no less.

Bryant beat the sheet out of Tech and little Bobby and that is fact! Nick sends nobody packing due to athletic ability. Only the personal behavior gets you booted at Bama!!! You spin it however it makes you feel good about your team. Nick’s worst problem was when he came to Bama he didn’t do what all other coaches taking over a new program do and that was just run the feckers off that should never have been signed! Instead he allowed some to hang around with a medical scholly that 1st year only and he has paid a price for his decision to allow those to graduate. The only player that made an issue was a player from Nease Charlie Kirshman who was signed in one of the Mark Richt attempts to get the friend of a great player (Tim Tebow) and it failed. Charlie stayed 3 years and never got a snap!!!!! Go ahead and get your firepower ready for Nick is sending two of your Georgieee stars back this year.
