How will Isaiah Crowell’s dismissal affect UGA’s chances of signing Derrick Henry?
Henry is the 5-star RB who de-committed from UGA earlier this month after being pledged to the Bulldogs for nearly a year. He decided to re-open his recruitment because he felt like he rushed his decision but emphasized that he is still considering UGA.
On Friday, Henry was made aware of Crowell’s arrest on Twitter, and he responded by taking up for Crowell, saying:
“Pray for Crowell instead of bashing him. Because everyone wasn’t raised the same nor made .. So everyone should just pray he sees a better way.”
Later on Friday morning (before Crowell was dismissed), Henry was interviewed on Birmingham’s 97.3FM or SmashMouth Radio. Here are some of the highlights:
- On hearing from UGA since Crowell’s charges: “I haven’t gotten any calls from UGA but fans on Twitter [let me know] what happened this morning, saying they need me back. That’s about it.”
- On defending Crowell on Twitter: “Basically, I just said that everybody needs to pray for Crowell instead of bashing him because everybody wasn’t raised the same or made the same. And pray he sees a better way. That’s a real tough situation .. you can see by his tweets and what he tweets about [that] he had a tough childhood.”

Ex-UGA recruit Derrick Henry showed a lot of class with his compassionate remarks towards Isaiah Crowell (247sports.com)
- On Crowell being charged with gun possession: “I don’t do that but everybody is different. Maybe he had a situation, so you never know what’s going on. The world is crazy nowadays. Nobody can really say until you talk to him, so I couldn’t really speak for him.”
- Henry said his top schools are “Alabama, UGA, Tennessee and USC.”
- Henry said the presence of other top running backs, including Keith Marshall at UGA and TJ Yeldon at Alabama, won’t factor into his college decision. “That won’t weigh [in] at all. That’s competition. Football is competition and that’s what I love. I’m a competitor and I love to compete. Competition is nothing that scares me away from anywhere.”
- Henry said UGA’s Mark Richt and Tennessee’s Derek Dooley were the easiest coaches to talk to, while Alabama’s Nick Saban is not as easy. “[Saban] cracks jokes. At the same time, he’s always serious. I don’t ever laugh, even if he’s laughing or not … I’m not intimidated. I just respect what he’s done. I just try to listen to everything and try to be serious. It’s just respect out for him.”
- Henry will definitely play running back in college.
- Henry’s favorite colors are black and red.
- Henry tentatively plans to announce in December, and will enroll early in college in January.

No running back will commit to UGA for 2013 that is any good. Tenn, South Carolina, Florida Vandy all have much better opportunities for top backs. Kamara, Henry, Dye will not be at UGA.
I am totally surprised that JHC guardians have not made him withdraw from UGA.

UGA will be just fine numb-nuts. Things always happen for a reason. Things that you work for are more important than the things you take for granted. Hope I.C. gets out of his trouble and learns a life lesson from it. He still has a lot of people who love him and he’ll survive. I hope he understands why UGAfans were mad at him. I will miss him and I wish him the best. I.C. , DO NOT GO TO ANOTHER SEC SCHOOL LIKE ZAC DID…

Sometimes first impressions lead to true realities; My first impression of Crowell over a year ago was that of a self-centered kid with a thug mentality. In hindsight you can bet that Richt and Co wishes they had never offered him………but then again Richt and Co still don’t realize there’s more to evaluating than football talent alone. Ealey and Crowell make prime examples of why the coach should research past history .

I have been concerned about the UGA football team and Athletic Department direction for over 4 years now. It continues today and although you and others say dont bad talk the program, I will tell the truth about what is going on. No LEADERSHIP OR ACCOUNTABILITY EXIST IN BUTTS MEHRE or the ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT. This is no longer on the players themselves for bad behavior, our AD states publicly that we will keep things quiet and not punish shows total inept judgement in the highest position of our Athletic Department. If you want to condone this behavior from the AD McQuackity then you can by all rights, but I will not in any way support what is occuring with UGA football and Athletic Department. Can I do anything, no, can I voice my unwanted opinion, yes — will it make a difference, probably not until those like yourself step up and say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. You, alums and fans are the very definition of ” status quo ” the past several years and look where we are today—–

Real problem… These kids certainly deserve their fair share of criticism but I just don’t understand how UGA fans continue to over look this disturbing pattern. Individually the kids are at fault, but as a whole CMR should be held accountable. Not like UGA is recruiting different kids than Bama. I don’t understand why UGA fans think they can’t do any better than Richt. The program is a sleeping giant. With the right staff in place UGA should be competing for national championships EVERY year. Yet CMR just signed a contract extension.

After the recent comments by C Washington, C Washington should be suspended for a full year and scholarship be canceled. Anytime a player starts pitting the players against the fans and student body time for them to be gone.
To the 5 white kids commited in the 2013 class and your parents. You 5 need to think long and hard about whether you want to be a part of this THUG U mentality. Have your parents read the comments by C Washington and it is perfectly clear that this is no place for white football players at this time.
Pisses me off to no end that a bunch of grown men paid handsome salaries can allow things at UGA and Butts Mehre to get so out of hand. We have ” SERIOUS TROUBLE ” in Athens, GA.

Gtdawg… I refer you to my 8:41. BTW do you know how much Richt is paid? Factoring in the pattern of arrests and lack luster performances on the field… Do you really feel like UGA is getting its money’s worth? It’s my opinion your program can do much better. There is a guy a Vanderbilt right now who would lock down the Georgia boarders for top prospects. Again forget about Crowell and the individual situation. It’s the pattern you should be concerned with.

Read and judge for yourself —
Y’all think you know so much, but in reality you know nothing. You don’t know what we come from, you don’t know our struggles, all you know is the number on our jersies. 99% of you don’t give a crap about us outside of football. When we’re doing well you’re all in our faces, when things get tough and we need encouragement you’re nowhere to be found. You’re fake and I despise you for it. We shall band together guys, we’ve been working hard and we only need each other. NONE of those outsiders will contribute to our survival as a team or as individuals, you can guarantee that.

dismissal chances man the ajc makes everything about uga so doom and gloom. Everyone blaming the head coach why not blame the young man that screwed up or his parents why is it the coach’s fault trust me these coaches beat it down their throat about doing right and staying out of trouble. This kid is no thug either if anything he is uneducated and ignorant. He needs to pay for his mistakes and he will but i am willing to bet he did not know about the serial number and he probably does not even know what a serial number is. I dont get why kids with a chance to make millions and professional athletes want to act like thugs makes no sense to me.

You are absolutely right WWW. Henry can always go to Alabama, Tennessee or Auburn and do all of the things that Crowell just got caught doing without having to worry about any reprisals what so ever. The law in those states will simply turn a blind eye to any shenanigans their football player’s may be up to.

I dont know why a kid would want to come to athens. something is not right at this program. I dont know why a kids parents would want him to go there either. This is very troubling. Crowell looked impressive in our spring game and i love it how some of yall are like good riddance bc we see him again and i just hope it is not against us. What sucks is that we got a good month befor they are practicing with coaches and in full football mode so i am willing to guess we will lose two or three more starters if so i hope it is on the offensive side and not the defensive side bc we only got a few more starters left on defense.

All the arrest this yr and player dismissals will influence recruiting negatively bc a young recruit looks at the arrest, suspensions, and dismissals and they think to themselves the cops in athens are tough. i dont want to go there they arrest you for no reason. Recruits will not think it was the players fault bc these players all know each other either directly or indirectly thru friends and all they hear is i did not do anything man the cops in athens are insane. I work with alot of these kids and i hear this alot and trust me they all know each other if they are within 3 yrs of age it amazes me it is bc of all these showcases, combines and recruiting trips. They will know kids in cali and texas and all over. So the word gets out and it is the words of the suspect. I am not saying it is the cops fault bc i know someone will say that i am saying in a kids eye that is how they see it.

Ohh here we go… the “he made a mistake” crowd. Let me tell you something… driving around smoking dope with an unregistered firearm at your disposal is NOT a “mistake”. It is a decision that was made in spite of the negative ramifications and consequences that would be paid by many if he was caught. I HATE when people want to cover selfish decisions by one individual by saying it was a “mistake”. This “mistake” will cost all those other kids who are going to class and working hard. This will cost all those coaches who have committed many hours of preparation for the up coming season. Lauren don’t feel bad… like most in our society your just one of the sheep.
