Justin Akins: 3-star DE picks Tech over Clemson and NC State

After visiting Clemson on Thursday, Justin Akins decided to commit to Georgia Tech.

The 6-foot-4, 245-pound defensive end from Jackson High School picked Georgia Tech over football scholarship offers from Clemson and NC State.

The Yellow Jackets now have 10 commitments with 2013 – after DB John Marvin also committed on Thursday.

“I went to Clemson [on Thursday], looked around the campus and talked to the coaches,” Akins said. “Clemson was the last school on my list that I wanted to visit. After visiting there, I just knew Georgia Tech felt right so I made my decision.”

Why Georgia Tech? “The education, it’s in my home state, the football tradition there, and I want to represent Georgia Tech in a positive way.”

Akins admitted the recent commitment of Grayson DE Robert Nkemdiche to Clemson might’ve affected his feelings about the Tigers. “It actually did. I just felt like Clemson got the guy they wanted and I needed to move on.”

Akins called Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson, who was out of the office on vacation, to give him the news on Thursday evening.

Akins has a 3.1 GPA and will likely study Business. The 3-star defensive end is ranked as the state’s No. 78 overall prospect by Rivals.

Good pick up for Tech. This kid has been staying a bit under the radar, but I know a coach of one of the teams they play each season and he says the kid is a beast and has incredible potential, especially once he puts on another 30-40 pounds. Good feet and has a nose for the ball. Now go get a BIG noseguard or two!!!!!

Good pickup for tech. and a smart move by the young man. Better to start at GT than sit on the bench at Clemson.

Destin Dawg: “GT a better choice than Clemson for sure !!”

Yep, especially when you know that you’re going to sit on the bench while you’re at Clemson. I’d ask you to re-read his quote about RN affecting his decision, but that would require you to read — which I know is hard.

Good luck to this player, though.

The kid was honest about why he went in a different direction and that is a good thing. We have so many of these kids playing games with staffs and the recruiting sites are even worse than the players trying to sell you with actuall bullsheet over and over. 99% of the so called analyst never played a down of football in their life yet you listen to them and you would believe they’re Gil Brandt or much better.

I’ve noticed that a lot of our Recruits seem to have 3.0s to 3.3 GPAs, if we gonna recruit guys with those types of GPAs then we should be getting more elite Recruits and we should be Recruiting like a Texas or a Michigan.

Also, CPJ still hasn’t learned his “lesson”, 4 yrs. ago he Recruited a bunch of “Tweener DEs” that were too slow for LB and not big enough to make an impact at DE and here we are 4 years later while they are RS-juniors and they are just now getting on the filed and have made no positive impact for GT FB, guys like Dieke, Cummings, Crenshaw are all undersized 3-4 DEs and were too slow for LB coming out of HS and GT knew it and still gave all 3 schollies.

Now here we are after have those experiments to FAIL, and yet we are doing the same thing, this Recruit runs a 4.8 – forty making him too slow to play LB and needing to gain 45-50 pounds to be an effective 3-4 DE.

If “everything” that touches GT is supposed to be so much better & smarter than the rest of the world then WHY are we making the same RECRUITING MISTAKES when we “know” how it is going to turn out FB-wise?

In summary, I hope the SA graduates and makes the most of his educational opportunities at GT, it is not his fault that he was extended an offer and put in a situation where it will be hard for him to succeed FB-wise.

___________

No one is bitter towards GT.

I am merely talking COLLEGE FB!

We have had too many Tweener failures at DE/DL in the CPJ era, and at some point our coaching staff has to learn their lessons.

We play in a BCS conference, and we have UGA on our schedule that last Sat. in November, and personally I like WINNING more than losing.

Try talking CFB for once instead of “what anti-WnE remarks can I make” to try and take the focus off of what GT is doing wrong.

WnE

June 28th, 2012

In other States the rank & file “common man” has no problem identifying with and pulling for the Elite Academic FB-playing College in their area, but GT doesn’t get any of that support.

The reason is simple & disturbing, too many of our GT Alums are smug, jerk, icehole Elitists that look down on the rest of the State that did not go to GT, this attitude might be good for stroking one’s own ego, but it is horrible for getting consistently high quality Recruiting Classes.

This WnE guy on the tech blog and Thomas Brown on the UGA blog have to be one of the ajc writers with their constant bs stiring the pot crap. Noone that is a true fan of their team is gonna continually blast the things wrong with the program, and here you have a person doing it for Tech and UGA. Something seems very fishy to me about these characters!!

3-13 vs. the segment of the schedule that “defines” GT FB to those outside of GT

GT is 14-12 the last 2 seasons vs. the 69th & 71st toughest schedule in 2010 & 2011

Had GT played “normal” BCS level schedules strength-wise that were ranked anywhere from #25 to #40, then GT would have likely had back-to-back losing seasons.

GT & CPJ’s saving grace have been a very weak ACC and a very weak OOC schedule.

So please tell me everything that can be going “right” with GT FB when we are 1-10 vs. UGA since CMR arrived.

Don’t know if I have time to list everything that is going right, but I can list few things off the top of my head.

- A coaching change has been mnade since your beloved CMR arrived in Athens
- The Yellow Jackets won the ACC title in 2009 (since vacated)
- This is shaping up to be one of the better recruiting classes if it holds through signing day
- A new defensive coordinator was hired and improvement is expected this season
- A special teams coach was hired and improvement is expected this season
- CPJ has recruited some quality players in spite of the efforts of some deranged so-called fan who stalks kids and tries to convince them to commit somewhere else

I’m sure I can post more if need be.

+++++++++++++++++++++++

That coaching change you refer to has the HC (CPJ) “trending downward” ( from 20-7 to 14-12) as more of HIS RECRUITS get on the field, that’s NOT a good sign, yet you overlook this FACT as you look through your Yellow Jacket Colored Glasses (YJCGs).

That new DC was hired at the same time (actually before) UGA hired CTG, a move that many/most GT fans laughed at since CAG was supposed to the the 3-4 guru and CTG was supposed to be an idiot, and yet CTG’s defense showed great improvement in year-2 while CAG’s defense was just as bad in year-2, and now here we are yet again “hopeful” in year THREE that things will get better.

Somehow CTG can teach “dumber players” his version of the 3-4 vs. tougher schedules in a tougher Conference than CAG that is supposed to have smarter SAs that are more disciplined yet we make way more mental mistakes on Defense than does UGA.

These quality players that you speak of have NOT show any upside like the quality players that UGA and other colleges have been getting.

When CPJ first took over at GT we had 5-6 NFL guys on EACH side of the ball, yet now after 4 or 5 CPJ Recruiting classes we are LUCKY to have 1 or 2 future NFL guys on each side of the ball, that sir is called a TALENT DRAIN and that is WHY we have had such poor results vs. such weak schedules, is this what you call something “going right” for GT FB?

Your “list of things going right” is simply a delusional wish-list rather than a realistic look at GT FB!

HighTech

Poor results? I see winning records. Also, I think you’re underestimating the talent level on the current roster. I see success as competing for and winning championships. If the number of players in the NFL is the measure of a successful program, then you should cheer for some other program like UNC, UGA, or Texas. I see the world through YJCG’s because I am a fan. I was a fan through the Curry, Ross, Lewis, O’Leary, Gailey, and now Johnson years. I will always be a fan.
