Carl Lawson: 5-star DE on why he never really considered Georgia Tech or UGA

DE Carl Lawson will take five official visits, despite being committed to Auburn (AJC)

UGA and Georgia Tech fans seems to be far more disappointed to see the state’s top two prospects, DE Robert Nkemdiche (committed to Clemson) and LB Reuben Foster (committed to Alabama), pick out-of-state schools than seeing DE Carl Lawson do the same (committed to Auburn).

The 6-foot-2, 250-pounder from Milton High School has sort of flown under the radar, if that’s possible while being ranked No. 5 overall by ESPN.

At a recent all-star combine with the nation’s top prospects, Rivals recruiting analyst Mike Farrell proclaimed Lawson as the most dominant overall player at the first day of camp and said it would be “not crazy” if Lawson challenged Nkemdiche’s spot at No. 1.

That’s some mind-boggling praise for Lawson, who did not have any early football scholarship offers last December before blowing people away at the RisingSeniors.com all-star game.

“I guess I’m considered one of the top prospects in the nation but I don’t really know,” Lawson told the AJC. “I just go out there and try to compete against the best.”

Another recruiting analyst said if Lawson was two inches taller, he would be ranked at the No. 1 spot. (Note: Nkemdiche is the most talented prospect I’ve ever seen out of Georgia, but I couldn’t argue against Lawson at No. 2).

Which brings us to Georgia Tech and UGA.

Lawson’s father played football at Georgia Tech, yet they weren’t one of the first schools to offer. Perhaps taking the high road, Lawson says it wasn’t a big deal.

“They were kind of late to offer but it was just a fact I didn’t feel a connection to Georgia Tech,” he said. “When you find a college, you have to find it yourself. It wasn’t about them offering late because my dad played there. It was about what fit best for me and my family, and Auburn was the choice.”

What about UGA? It’s the same story, according to Lawson. “The real story … this is what happened … I just … I don’t know. Coach Grantham came up to the school. He’s a great person. I just told him I loved Auburn.

Which in-state recruit were you most surprised to see leave?

“It wasn’t anything like that there’s bad blood. I never said that. I just was never interested in Georgia.”

What is interesting about Lawson is that after he committed to Auburn in late March, he has continued to visit other schools – including Oregon and USC, with an upcoming trip scheduled to Florida State.

In fact, Lawson plans to take all five official visits as a senior. He’s not sure yet, other than Auburn. But he says the schools recruiting him the hardest right now are Tennessee, Ole Miss, USC, UCLA, Florida State and Florida.

“I’m still firm with Auburn but I want to see what else is out there,” Lawson said. “You only have this experience once in your life to visit places, and I want to take advantage of it. I don’t know where I’m going yet but I will tell you this: I’m taking all five of my official visits.”

Should Auburn be concerned about the official visits to other schools? “I don’t know. We’ve never talked about that. But they know I’m still firm to Auburn and I know I am, too.”

20 teams offered Carl Lawson a Scholarship.

UGA is the one who did not, yet we lose our entire defense after this season.

Alabama offered him.

Auburn offered him.

Florida offered him.

Georgie tek, late, offered him.

Rodney Garner and Georgia never offered the kid. Says he is going to take all 5 official visits. Says he has, today,

Southern California

Florida

Florida State

recruiting him HARD to today. But, no Georgia offer. Why all these recruiting him then ? Do you give up ? Doesn’t sound like a proper sales strategy to me to quit recruiting him, especially with all these others recruiting him, HARD.

Carl Lawson got a nice mention in this article on Tide commit Grant Hill

“He certainly hadn’t seen a defensive end as fast as Carl Lawson, the 6-2, 253-pound five-star prospect from Alpharetta, Ga., who provided Hill’s favorite challenge of the weekend. In fact, Hill showed his naiveté of the recruiting world when discussing Lawson. “Who is he playing for?”

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/writers/andy_staples/06/25/grant-hill-alabama-rivals-100/index.html

Don’t worry about being called naive Grant . Coach Richt and Krew are apparently still asking the same sort of questions … year after year … on player after player … out of Georgia ;-)

There must be a reason UGA didn’t offer him. Maybe they did maybe they didn’t. We’ll never know for sure. Let’s not get bent out of shape worrying about a 17 year old kid and his decisions. Let’s find somehting better to do. Did you see where the University of Virginia changed their name to the Rays? From now on they will be known as the UV Rays.

UGA cannot be loaded.

We have 69 remaining scholarship recruits of the 107 Mark Richt signed to play here 2012. (And, a transfer-in.) 4 walk-ons playing special teams not offense or defense.

We are self-imposed NCAA Probation of 15 Lost Scholarships for signed scholarship recruits.

We lose the entire defense after 2012, and face you 2013 without them. 12 whom I think are NFL Draft Picks, maybe after 2012.

No, this is just typical with Carl Lawson for Georgie tek and UGA in-state. There is no question Carl Lawson is significantly better than the vast majority of the 19 commitments we have who average 3.21 recruit ranking all 19 to-date.

If Brice Ramsey jumps ship, the 3.21 will go down further.

Mark Richt with 3.65 average recruits his 11 years to-date, is 3-13 vs top 10 compared with 6 other SEC teams better all 11 years.

And, all but Vandie and Missy State better than Mark Richt after 2005. 2005 was 8 seasons ago now 2012.

Disagree Crush, we do need him. We need him more than you need him.

Instead, we make a splash with our 6th QB. We do have better QBs on our roster than you. Only they are and continue to be transfers-out – attrition.

We need to sign defensive players. We do need secondary players more than we do on the line, but anyone who thinks we are re-loading 2012 after losing the entire defense, is going to be on Mark Richt’s case next season when they realize just how far behind the 8-ball he is 2013 with Alabama on our schedule. It’s not like Mark Richt’s 3 wins over Alabama are going to help him 2013. 2012, yes. 2013, no. Anyway, Mark Richt’s 3 wins over Alabama are :

1. Alabama team who didn’t even make the Coaches’ Poll Top 25.
2. 4-loss Alabama team
3. Alabama team who lost to Louisiana Monroe

The DISNEYdawgs.com of this blog cannot have it both ways on Louisiana Monroe. First, they stated that that loss was worse in Nick Saban’s 1st season than Mark Richt’s loss to Vandie in his 6th season here, who beat only 0-12 Duke and 1-11 Temple. Now, they want to take credit for beating you the same year you lost to same Louisiana Monroe.

And, if they DO NOT WANT TO HEAR IT SHOVED DOWN THEIR THROATS, then they

SHOULD CEASE AND DESIST WITH HOW GREAT WE ARE, when we’re # 5 or # 6 in The SEC in the Mark Richt era.

Mark Richt’s wins over Alabama, like ALL OF HIS WINS, were when Alabama was DOWN.

I will add though that others are saying the Tide staff is yet another in that list of schools you named above that seem to think they could put Lawson’s talent to good use . Seems like UGA would have offered him if the Dawg coaching staff actually thought they needed additional defensive talent .

William,

You are a trip saying that all of us are unproductive posting on this blog, and there you are doing what ?

And, you are trip saying maybe UGA did offer him and maybe we did NOT, we will NEVER know you say.

Typical junk from someone trying to make EXCUSES for us.

The facts are 20 teams offered him a scholarship and 3 notable better football programs than us in the Mark Richt era are recruiting this kid hard, while we never have offered him a scholarship. Perhaps you should do more reading and less posting, when you can easily see who has given him a scholarship offer and who has NOT.

Rodney Garner, losing his entire team on defense after 2012, has not even offered this kid for Mark Richt. If Georgie tek could have his commitment today if Paul Johnson had offered him first, are you seriously going to tell me we could not have here at UGA with this opportunity here after 2012 for him, his degree, his fun at our school, and his NFL career after his time here, us losing the entire defense after 2012 ?

We GIVE UP before even starting on the top kids, which is what

No, sir.

We don’t have a bloody clue what we need and what we don’t.

We are set at QB for the next 5 years, and have as our only Top 100 recruit guess what ?

Another QB.

We have 2 in a row # 1 RB in the nation recruits and several others ranked # 3 and # 5 and # 13 nationally.

They went after another RB whom they wasted their time securing commitment from who now has egg on their faces for not pointing this out to him.

We recruited Cam Newton as a TE.

We had Orson Charles TE catch 21 passes his freshman season here, while Aron White caught only 3 his freshman season the year before and yet, Aron White started until game 9 that season. Crazy stuff.

We had no QB to replace Matt Stafford.

We have a fullback oriented offense. There are 200 fullbacks annually recruited. We recruited NONE at fullback 6 consecutive seasons until we just signed one a few weeks ago, coming in now.

We have let our OL slide into oblivion nearly all 11 years of Mark Richt era, yet some years we sign 10.

Crazy stuff.

We had 4 senior starters on the OL last year and brought in 1 this season.

No, we don’t recruit for needs.

It stands out about Mark Richt that he has NO ROSTER MANAGEMENT.

He should have brought in 29 that count against the 2012 signing class, and he signed 14.

15 self-imposed NCAA Probation under the 85-man limit.

We redshirted the # 3 RB in the nation by every service so we go to see him 2 years only and then the # 12 pick over-all worldwide in the NFL. He put up over 2,500 yards in his 2 years then gone.

We recruited the # 1 QB in the nation out of high school because his sister was at UGA doing well, and he was # 3 on our Depth Chart until Game 8, when we finally made him the starter.

No one can look at Mark Richt’s roster management and state that you suppose we must not need him, that they know what they are doing.

This is a MISS.

Alabama wants him.

Florida wants him.

Southern California wants him.

20 teams want him.

They have NOT GIVEN UP.

We did, and we lose 12 players after 2012 who have or will have started for us.

Lawson’s father went to Georgia Tech and was brought up hating UGA. When Grantham approached him Lawson had developed the mine set many years earlier that he would never go to Georgia. Grantham felt this inbred hate and decided it would be a complete waste of time and apparently he was right because Lawson won’t even visit Georgia.
If he likes Auburn a lot , he would love Georgia if he would give us a fair chance. Auburn is like living in a big country town. All the students go home on the weekends because there is nothing to do. Athens is a modern town with a large town like Atlanta, mind set. Athen’s creates it’s own entertainment on the weekend and if you are bored , that’s your fault.

Georgia’s number of games vs Alabama is a LOT more than anyone would expect compared to Auburn. Frankly compared to all the other teams. We play Alabama a LOT compared to what I thought the numbers would be. Our % goes up about the same as their percentage would go down, if you would beat Auburn and Tennessee while we get out of playing you to run in here and read them all say for me that you are scum and no comment about your 2 of 3 current nc.

Oh, and the over-signing they whine about is all a LIE too.

(:

Mark Richt over-signed 107 toward to his 85-man limit for 2012 and now will over-sign 33 for 2013 again.

He has 69 remaining of the 107 over-signed toward his 85-man limit.

Which is why they whine about ACL or Mark Richt will give guy scholarship after his ACL knowing he will never play.

Frankly, that is how he got Jarvis Jones. It was only AFTER Jarvis accepted Mark Richt here, that Mark Richt only then found out that Jarvis Jones did CLEAR medical about a sprained-neck, when Mark Richt LOST OUT on recruiting Jarvis Jones from here to Southern California.

@JB

I think the real story here is, which 20 out of those 150 is Georgia or Georgia Tech signing. To keep it real, there is absolutely no excuse for Georgia or Georgia Tech to keep signing mostly second tier, 3-4 star players from their own state, and allow all the other “power” schools to recruit the most elite players. This upcoming 2013 recruiting season is proof enough. Nkemdiche, Foster, and Lawson all signed somewhere else without so much as even a consideration. (I know Foster continues to talk to CTG, but his ego needs to be fed.) And just to be clear, there is nothing wrong with the 3-4 star players that are signing, as they were offered by some of these same “power” schools. But I find it interesting that most of the “next level” players, program changers, are leaving the state. Why would I not want to turn Georgia or Georgia Tech into a National Power and contender as a kid? Just sayin……

We’re replacing 38 attrition of 3.65 with 19 commitments of avg 3.21, and do it in a year in which after 2012, we lose the entire complete defense.

If I don’t like a movie I get up and leave. I am not totally happy with our football program over the last 4-5 yrs but I still bleed red and black and I will until I die. I’m also not happy with the state of our country or its leadership, but you won’t hear me talking about how great it is in Russia or China and sending the message that we need to be more like them. UGA love it or leave it!

@ redandblack—– agree with 5:29am the question continues to be why so many of the top football players choose to leave the home state and flagship university dry. Yes GA has alot of D1 players but we loose way to many top players and absolutely refuse to recruit any white players. Again, dont care about other sec schools, UGA is my school and football program is broken in many ways

@wet no excuses for UGA. It is Milton high school where many top athletes in football and basketball play annually. Our coaches rely on following others, we do not have leaders at UGA, just followers.

2. From reading posts on here, one would never know UGA is having one of the best recruiting classes in the nation for 2013, and probably have more top 2014 commits than any other school.

Real Problem,

You’re right of course. I doubt seriously with Mike Adam$ still here longer, even though he announced he’s leaving; and, with his minion Greg McGarity still here with a new contract for himself too, that Mark Richt is gone in 2 years. I would prefer to see Mark Richt make the changes here at my program now. You absolutely know when he goes to a new program, since his contract specifically calls for that that he can and at no penalty to him or the new program, that he is going to be very selective of whom it is he hires on his coaching staff at the new school. That’s been what’s dragging this good man down, his loyalty to a sorry coaching staff, and his stubbornness to actually have a well-thought out coaching staff. When you lead the nation in recruiting over 12 years now and lead the nation in NFL Draft Picks over 12 years now and have the sorriest record against the top football teams all 11 years to-date, there is only 1 place to look.

There is debate by the Richt-0-Philes here Real Problem over the years that Georgia does NOT deserve better. They discount out-of-hand the fact that we’re # 11 all-time in college football wins here at Georgia. They also discount out-of-hand, that after 2005, Mark Richt is only # 21 in the nation and # 6 of just 2012 SEC teams in won/lost, not # 11. They talk about well who you goin’ to hire. You put up the list of coaches who have all done better in the Mark Richt era than he and they want to remove this guy because he isn’t coaching in The SEC now. And, they want to remove this other guy because he hasn’t coached at his new school for 11 years yet when only 5 coaches in all of college football today, have. And, they want to remove this other guy from the list of better results on the field (not even getting into his 69 remaining of his 107 signed scholarship recruits today because of off-field issues of which we have 5 failed NCAA Drug Tests during Spring Practice Greg McGarity said he would keep under wraps until just prior to kick-off, when we should be getting excited for the season, not then releasing what happened in April as NEWS that day when it was news 60 days ago – but, it will be AGAIN then.) because this other coach also better than Mark Richt in his time in The SEC, had poor prior results. Look, if the 2 coaches coached head-to-head the entire time in The SEC that Mark Richt did, and he has 3 NC to show for it and far better results vs the top teams, he’s the better coach and has the better results including specific won/lost record better than Mark Richt in their SHARED TIME HERE in The SEC.

I am pointing out that the Richt Apologists feel it is their appointed duty to run-off anyone who doesn’t think that Mark Richt is the best coach in The SEC.

# 5 or # 6 is not # 1.

@response: Your opinion is 2013 is great, of the players signed only 5 or 6 fit four star status. Now I do not care much about stars but current class is very weak. If you make a football team up with just recvrs and db’s then yes it is a better than average class. Otherwise; not much to get excited about.

Every poster on this forum could be head recruiter for UGA and with the talent around would sign enough athletes to win 7 or 8 games a season. These UGA coaches are paid to beat the top teams and this is not and has not been happening.

Tired of the look for great news etc. play on words mean nothing. Here is one for you——-

AUBURN is hot right now with many top recruits and a couple of current UGA are wide eyed also. Time to lock down players, meet the needs of the depth chart roster, if a kid bounces around withdraw the scholarship and offer it to someone that wants to be a Georgia Bulldog and will stay commited.

Responseuga, — your post sounds just like what ryan spews from pay sites
