Shag Wiggins: UGA recruit denies and clarifies rumors on de-committing

Shaq Wiggins, one of UGA’s top recruits, has heard the rumors.

UGA DB recruit Shaq Wiggins (AJC/Bob Andres)

UGA DB recruit Shaq Wiggins (AJC/Bob Andres)

The DB from Sandy Creek High School knows all about the rampant speculation over the past few weeks that he was either on the brink of de-committing from the Bulldogs — or had already done so privately. It’s a touchy subject after 5-star RB Derrick Henry and another de-committed from UGA recently.

“I think people take some things the wrong way,” Wiggins told the AJC on Tuesday night.

“There’s things people say on message boards and Twitter. I even had people calling me, saying ‘I heard you de-committed’ and all that stuff.”

So what’s the official word? “I’m still looking at schools and stuff like that. But I haven’t de-committed yet.”

Realizing how that sounded a little awkward, Wiggins quickly added, “Well, I’m not de-committing any time soon.”

He explained further: “I guess all the rumors came from me taking visits to other schools, just looking what they have to offer. Now I did have some thoughts about [de-committing], but it wasn’t too serious.”

How committed is Wiggins to UGA? “I’d say 95 percent.”

There may be other UGA recruits that are more talented, but there isn’t one that is more valuable in recruiting. With his charismatic and outgoing personality, Wiggins is UGA’s top recruit at recruiting other players – and it’s not even close. Even the Bulldog coaches (which can’t comment per NCAA rules) are amazed at Wiggins’ people skills.

“The Georgia coaches know where I stand with them and my commitment there,” Wiggins said. “For the most part, nothing has changed.”

That’s the good news. However, UGA fans will still be worried that Wiggins will take unofficial visits later this summer to Auburn, Florida and with the Bulldogs. By the way, if Wiggins wasn’t committed to UGA, he said it would be Florida “because of my relationship with [Will Muschamp] and the other defensive coaches.”

Then after his senior season at Sandy Creek, Wiggins has tentatively planned for official visits to UGA, Clemson, Ole Miss, Florida and Auburn.

“It’s recruiting, you only get to go through this one time in your life, and I want to see what other colleges have to offer,” Wiggins said.

There’s another strange twist in this situation – Wiggins being committed to UGA but communicating with other schools. He said he learned that was a good thing to do after watching two of his Sandy Creek teammates go through the recruiting process this past year – WR JaQuay Williams committed early to Auburn, had some doubts after some assistants left the staff, flirted with UGA but ended up signing with Auburn. RB Mikey Hilton pledged early to Ole Miss, nearly flipped after the coaching change to North Carolina, but stuck with Ole Miss.

“Georgia fans shouldn’t be worried at all, but I’m keeping my options open because you never know what can happen with college coaches, just from my past experiences,” Wiggins said. “I don’t want to make the same mistakes that other players made before me.”

I did a week on the island in 84, I have done a few day trips over the years. It seems from the Greystone ad people are not allowed on their property unless you are a guest of the INN.

Made a trip to The Varsity. Cops had Spring St and North Ave blocked off, so I thought maybe a big time recruit was visiting Ga Tech. Turns out it was some guy named Obama but I can’t find him on any of the recruiting services. Does anyone know what position this guy plays? Figured he would of been rated highly with that kind of attention????

It is always ironic when someone spends their time running around to recruiting boards and blogs … to tell everyone else to “get a life” and stop talking about recruiting . It is usually indicative of just how busy THEY are :-)

If these black athletes had fathers that undserstood the term commitment–assuming they even know them–perhaps they would undertand what the term commitment means.

Dictionary.com:

com·mit·ment   [kuh-mit-muhnt] Show IPA noun

1. the act of committing.
2. the state of being committed.
3. the act of committing, pledging, or engaging oneself.
4. a pledge or promise; obligation: We have made a commitment to pay our bills on time.
5. engagement; involvement: They have a sincere commitment to religion.

Try”committing” to a girl or job while exploring other options and see where this gets you? Oh, wait…that’s what you saw from your biological father growing up, right?

Just go away…you don’t deserve to play for a committed man like Mark Richt…you deserve to play for a Nick Saban, a highly loyal and committed man! LOL!

I heard this kid Obamma was first recruited as a center but he wasn’t a true center so he was trying out for tight-end. Rumor is he’s not a tight-end either because he was a wide receiver for too long, lol…

Nobody has said it, so I will. Dawg fans, please stop harping on what commitment means and how bad you hate it when these kids look around at other schools because we all know that flipping Reuben foster from bama would be huge. It sucks when a kid gives his word and backs out but nobody would be crying foul if a kid decommitted and picked up Georgia…

I never thought that this kid would waffle, so I’m going to try not to get to excited. We do this to ourselves by hanging onto every word that comes out of these recruiting sites or blogs. Yes we want to know, we want to be informed. We love our teams and want the best players, but grown men should know better. I’m guilty too. I get upset at a 17/18 yr.old who may not even be able to remember his SS# or even his address, lol. Some of these kids are very smart and honest and know what “commitment” means. Some of these “athletes” skated on education and integrity and either don’t know or don’t care what a “commitment” means…

Wiggins already knows what the “gnome” has to offer…. spoke with him two hours but did not commit to Bummer. Nkemdiche knew what the “gnome” had to offer and he committed to Clemson. That’s two strikes for the “gnome”. Foster is looking around – strike three for the “gnome”.
Wiggins is just having fun traveling and being wined and dined. Time comes he will sign with Mark Richt and the Dawgs.

Husband, “Honey, I am committed to this marriage. Well, at least 95% of the time.”
Wife, ” Thanks dear. It makes me fill special that I’m the one you’re with most of the time.”
Husband, ” Yea, I don’t love those other women like I do you baby. At least right now I can say that, but who knows what will happen. Some of those other women really say they would like for me to leave you and be with them full time. I’m thinking about that, but I’m with you for the most part, at least for the time being.”

I wonder if that would pass for “commitment.”
