Shag Wiggins: UGA recruit denies and clarifies rumors on de-committing

Shaq Wiggins, one of UGA’s top recruits, has heard the rumors.

UGA DB recruit Shaq Wiggins (AJC/Bob Andres)

UGA DB recruit Shaq Wiggins (AJC/Bob Andres)

The DB from Sandy Creek High School knows all about the rampant speculation over the past few weeks that he was either on the brink of de-committing from the Bulldogs — or had already done so privately. It’s a touchy subject after 5-star RB Derrick Henry and another de-committed from UGA recently.

“I think people take some things the wrong way,” Wiggins told the AJC on Tuesday night.

“There’s things people say on message boards and Twitter. I even had people calling me, saying ‘I heard you de-committed’ and all that stuff.”

So what’s the official word? “I’m still looking at schools and stuff like that. But I haven’t de-committed yet.”

Realizing how that sounded a little awkward, Wiggins quickly added, “Well, I’m not de-committing any time soon.”

He explained further: “I guess all the rumors came from me taking visits to other schools, just looking what they have to offer. Now I did have some thoughts about [de-committing], but it wasn’t too serious.”

How committed is Wiggins to UGA? “I’d say 95 percent.”

There may be other UGA recruits that are more talented, but there isn’t one that is more valuable in recruiting. With his charismatic and outgoing personality, Wiggins is UGA’s top recruit at recruiting other players – and it’s not even close. Even the Bulldog coaches (which can’t comment per NCAA rules) are amazed at Wiggins’ people skills.

“The Georgia coaches know where I stand with them and my commitment there,” Wiggins said. “For the most part, nothing has changed.”

That’s the good news. However, UGA fans will still be worried that Wiggins will take unofficial visits later this summer to Auburn, Florida and with the Bulldogs. By the way, if Wiggins wasn’t committed to UGA, he said it would be Florida “because of my relationship with [Will Muschamp] and the other defensive coaches.”

Then after his senior season at Sandy Creek, Wiggins has tentatively planned for official visits to UGA, Clemson, Ole Miss, Florida and Auburn.

“It’s recruiting, you only get to go through this one time in your life, and I want to see what other colleges have to offer,” Wiggins said.

There’s another strange twist in this situation – Wiggins being committed to UGA but communicating with other schools. He said he learned that was a good thing to do after watching two of his Sandy Creek teammates go through the recruiting process this past year – WR JaQuay Williams committed early to Auburn, had some doubts after some assistants left the staff, flirted with UGA but ended up signing with Auburn. RB Mikey Hilton pledged early to Ole Miss, nearly flipped after the coaching change to North Carolina, but stuck with Ole Miss.

“Georgia fans shouldn’t be worried at all, but I’m keeping my options open because you never know what can happen with college coaches, just from my past experiences,” Wiggins said. “I don’t want to make the same mistakes that other players made before me.”

Kid, no offense, but I’m not losing any sleep over where you end up. You might, however, want to look up the definition of commitment. Frightening to think we’re dependent on someone so obviously unreliable as you to recruit other players.

Nothing wrong with a kid wanting to keep his options open because of the potential for coaching changes . Anyone that is realistic knows Richt is living on borrowed time . His plug would have already been pulled at a top tier program . The occasional cheese cracker division title and unrealistically weak schedules can only last so long and take you so far …

Most 17 year old’s can’t decide what kind of pizza to order. Let it rest. The coach’s sooner or later will make him choose, as other DB’s are out there waiting for an offer from UGA.

Let me translate for you leghumpers…. “I don’t know if CMR will have a job afer the dawgs get curb stomped this season”

Not sure why anyone would blame this young man for keeping his options open.

He doesnt think CTG will be there on Defense, He thinks he will be a NFL coach of head coach at another college team. That why he is looking. AS for CMR, who knows where he will be. He is about out of free passes. Needs something special with the schedule in his favor.

Sounds like couple of you Dawgs are worried about Muschamp. Better get the Gators this year because we’ll be stacked in 2013 and UGA loses almost their entire starting defense. If you can’t make 2 in a row while we’re in transition, then it may be many years before it happens again.

MattinATL,

Nice cut down calling Alabama a redneck school, especially considering they have more programs ranked higher nationally than Georgia. I grew up a Georgia fan, but go to Graduate School at Alabama. So if you’re going to talk trash, atleast try to make some sense instead of making a stupid generic comment like that. It’s almost as pathetic as a Liberal calling everyone that isn’t one a racist.

He’d fit in here for 2 reasons : (1) we lose the entire defense after 2012 and (2) could we play him vs Missouri out there and no one notice he’s not one of the ones we have been recruiting here in our secondary of really all of them his size.

These kids at the end of the day want the attention from the recruiting … thats all he is saying … he doesnt want America to forget about him… but he needs to realize that saying all those confusing things about where he wants to play ball at the end of the day will have to keep the coaches recruiting him hard and taking away time they could be spending with someone who is not committed yet. If for one year the commits would stay committed and help put 110% into recruiting we could actually have the best recruiting class in the country… but those are just false dreams in this glorified rock star age of recruiting…

So what’s the official word? “I’m still looking at schools and stuff like that. But I haven’t de-committed yet.”

Realizing how that sounded a little awkward, Wiggins quickly added, “Well, I’m not de-committing any time soon.”

So which is it? He says he is 95% committed which sounds like a little like saying, I want to marry you, because you are dependable, but I would like the option to look around, in case there is a prettier girl out there, that might be better in bed.
You are either committed 100% or you are still shopping around your services. You are doing yourself and UGA a disservice. Coaches need to plan on folks that they can trust to keep their word. You don’t build a team on players who say one thing and do another. I don’t care what your age is. Surely you have parental guidance or coach guidance in your life, that should tell you that a man in life, will be graded on his word. If you want to shop around, de-commit and do so. UGA can find a replacement, but not if you play the on again-off again game, and keep them in the guessing stage.

The truth is the kid isn’t a elite player anyway. Nick gave him a 2 hour offer and I am not sure why the limit was placed on the offer. Sometime when you have numbers available you take players when you should have been trying to get better but take less due to space. This guy most likely will be a backup safety and special teams player his career. Richt has no clue on how to control his roster and that is documented. Cue Thomas Brown.

Whiskey Breath

Leave the kid alone, he want’s to put himself in the best situation, and Ga probably isn’t the best place.
These kids think about life beyond college, you have to give them their space. Fact of the matter is,
life after college for these kids is not always good.

Do not blame the players and for the most part the coaching staff. Because of the poor way the so called contract extensions were handled alot of these kids and thier parents realize that Butts Mehre is not very stable or settled at this time. The real issues at this time stem from poor business skills of McQuackity and Adams regarding contracts.

Mark and his staff should be camped at the door of Langley (sp). If you need 3 DB’s then 50 top notch (DB) players should should have an offer from UGA and you allow them to commit only when told so!

Piney Woods Pete

If UGA would dump Richt and hire a winning coach, they would have far less decommitments than they do now. When these guys start seriously thinking about playing for a 3rd rate loser, they get cold feet and go elsewhere.

Really, who wants to play for a phony saint and take remedial reading for four years?
