Rough week: UGA loses second football recruit in three days (UPDATED)

It has been a rough week for UGA.

UGA lost its second recruit of the week when WR Kyrin Priester backed off his commitment to the Bulldogs on Friday.

Earlier in the week, UGA’s top-rated recruit, 5-star tailback Derrick Henry, also decided to “re-open” his recruiting after being committed to the Bulldogs since last summer. He made a statement that you can read here, saying he rushed his decision — but claims he is still considering the Bulldogs.

What about Priester? He’s a Florida native who recently transferred from the Orlando area to Brookwood High School. A couple of months ago, the 6-foot-2, 185-pounder committed to UGA over Vanderbilt and TCU, citing UGA’s needs for wide receivers and his appeal to Mark Richt’s Christian beliefs (click to read story).

On Friday after playing with his Brookwood teammates in a 7-on-7 tournament. Priester confirmed that he was backing off his decision.

“I just want to see all my other options before I make a serious decision,” Priester told the AJC.

UGA, which was on a tremendous roll in recruiting with 20 commitments for 2013 at the beginning of the week, now is at 18. However, the Bulldogs could add more commitments as early as this weekend, with Saturday’s Mark Richt Football Camp.

Despite the loss of Priester, UGA still has the commitments of three other wide receivers, including Tramel Terry and Uriah LeMay (younger brother of UGA QB Christian LeMay).

CHECK BACK ANY MINUTE FOR ANOTHER COMMIT …

Remember that numbers were getting tight for this UGA recruiting class, and that UGA has been going after a couple of elite receivers… Maybe a silent already, and that’s the reason KY decommitted?

Are Henry & Priester really great prospects? YES.. Would I love them to be Dawgs? YES.. Will UGA’s recruiting class be okay without them??? This Dawg thinks so..

before the haters come on and try to bash UGA for priester decommitting, remember that one of his biggest reasons for committing when he did was the thought of potential for early playing time……which since that time UGA received 2 add’l. wr committments and appear in-line for at least one more HIGHLY regarded wr.

good luck to priester.

Yes, Kyrin was offered and he committed… And it’s likely that “P_The_Ricker” above has the story exactly correct..

It’s a good thing you guys have Todd Grantham. The fourth choice guy who averages 37 pts to ranked teams. He is AWESOME. His skill at stopping Kentucky and the Mississippi schools will help you guys win your JV schedule with or without recruits.

Don’t know if he changes his mind or not about UGA, but I like that he decommited before shopping around to see what the recruiting waters might offer him. I don’t think commited recruits should be making visits to other schools, but I don’t think you should pull their offer should they decide to make a visit elsewhere. . Not commited, I see so problem.

It’s a shame to see a young man decommit, but Georgia is fine at WR. Best of luck to you, Ky, wherever you end up. We’ll welcome you back with open arms if you decide to come back.

Priester committed to the Dawgs early when he was not being heavily recruited by other top-tier programs. I think he’s been noticed more recently by other SEC programs so now he’s backing off in order to flirt with them. Would love to have him as a Dawg, but if he ends up not being one I don’t think it’s a huge blow to the class.

As I mentioned on the previous thread, UGA feels they are in good shape with better option(s) at WR. Priester was ‘encouraged’ to look elsewhere. The de-committing thing works both ways…..it just looks worse when it’s the coaching staff that initiates it.

@ALL

T Terry may be the next to jump ship, Priester beat him to the punch. South Carolina may not have room for T Terry if he waits to much longer.

A Kamara is more of a lean to S. CAL at this time, would be very surprising to see him commit to UGA as kool aid fans are hoping and posting, have seen stranger things but not gonna happen I believe.

I think it is very funny that UGA fans think that a top recvr is going to sign at UGA to play one year with a 5′11″ weak armed inaccurate QB and then the future is a QB that hands off the ball 95% of the time in high school. These top recvrs catch more balls in one game than our so called future QB throws in two games total. All of this is what the coaches from other colleges are telling these kids, it is no secret. This weekend is not very promising in Athens and looks to be the worse of its kind since its origination. Oh well — nothing new

As much as I hate to lose a commitment like Henry or Kyrin we are loaded at Receiver and Running back. With a lot of highly rated receivers and running backs still available these two can be replaced fairly easily. I would rather they de-commit now than February 1st. So I have to respect both for the courtesy of doing it now. It shows integrity and class. Thank you.
What I want is some more Linemen and Defensive Backs.

UGA lauds academics only because of the ‘Hope Scholarship,” the Athletes get special consideration admissions (like Caleb King) who can’t even read on a third grade level.

Athens is a great town, too bad the local law enforcement treats students and tourist like the enemy of mankind.

Listen to what I am about to tell you Dawg fans because I know. For whatever it means, UGA will have the #1 ranked recruiting class in the nation come February. Just trust me on this one guys. Bama fans are on here everywhere for one reason… they are worried and obsessed with everything the state of GA has to offer that Alabama does not. Football is there only outlet and only thing they can count on.

“…they are worried and obsessed with everything the state of GA has to offer that Alabama does not…”

Insider, you are dead on with that one. Business takes me there about once a quarter and once you get away from the larger cities, it is depressing to witness the abject poverty a significant portion of that state’s populace lives in. I used to think Alabama jokes were funny. Not any more, I just feel sorry for them.

UGA always signs wide outs

June 15th, 2012
2:05 pm

Frankly, UGA needs to sign in Feb. about 5, 6 or 7, big meanies for the O line. Yes, as always, UGA needs to sign some meanies for the D oine and LBs. Losing a 6′2″ skinny flanker? I am sure that he is a fine kid and good luck to him.

I want UGA ot land some D and O line kids as THAT is HOW you win big in the SEC. Besides Julio, name one ALabama wide out in the last 6 years at Alabama. See? Sabin WINS with BULK. SO DOES Les.

In the SEC, really good flankers can be found everywhere. It took Masaquoi about 4 years to mature and be a factor. As good as Fred Gipson was he did not play pro ball beyond the NFL practice camps. See? THEY WERE REALLY GOOD in the SEC as mid level wide outs. UGA can always land them.

Gooooooooooooo Dos.

Its a great day to be on the side of God and victory, The Cpastone has two more solid verbal commitments joining the ranks this week.

Lets all congratulate: Leon Brown & Cole Mazza (UCLA flip) into the ranks of the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Your Reigning BCS National Champions.

Derrick Henry you can join us and win it all, or go play for these stray mutts who have belittled and scorned you all week long.
