Robert Nkemdiche: Clemson lands nation’s No. 1 recruit … “It’s family man!”

Robert Nkemdiche, the nation’s No. 1 overall college football prospect, has committed to Clemson.

The 6-foot-5, 275-pound defensive end from Grayson High School made the unexpected announcement during a visit to Clemson on Thursday.

“It’s family man!” Nkemdiche said in a text message to the AJC, confirming his commitment to Clemson.

There’s a lot of connections between Nkemdiche and Clemson that would make it feel like a football family: Two of his Grayson teammates, DB David Kamara (Nkemdiche’s best friend since middle school) and RB Wayne Gallman, have already committed to Clemson. There’s an extra level of trust with Clemson coach Dabo Swinney because he roomed together and played football at Alabama with Grayson coach Mickey Conn, who has helped Nkemdiche navigate through the recruiting process. Clemson is located only 100 miles away from Grayson High School, keeping Nkemdiche within close proximity to his support network.

It was an amazing turn of events for Clemson, which traditionally recruits well in the state of Georgia. Clemson failed to sign any Georgia prospects last February and now has  landed the nation’s No. 1 prospect from Georgia, along with two of his teammates.

Nkemdiche and Kamara went to Clemson on Wednesday for a three-day visit, and Kamara set things in motion by committing to the Tigers soon after arriving on campus. The next day, Nkemdiche followed with his pledge to the Tigers. The timing was surprising because Nkemdiche had been hinting that he would likely wait on making his college decision until after  his senior season — so he could take some official visits.

Clemson has been listed among Nkemdiche’s favorite schools, along with Alabama and Ole Miss. Robert, at one time or another, has also expressed heavy interest in UGA, LSU, Mississippi State and Florida, among others.

Don.t be fooled thinking that he is going to Clemson. Any player turning his back on the people that payed for his education and training can’t be trusted to keep his word. BTW FRED you are no Dawg fan by saying something stupid like you don.t blame him for not going to UGA. Of course you blame him for not going to UGA. That would be the honorable thing to do and would be the best for him or any player from Ga that is offered by UGA.

I dont know if i buy all the hype on robert. Dont get me wrong he is an excellent athlete with a NFL body at 17. that is why i think some of this isto do with the fact that he is not only big but a strong athlete and has matured at an early age and what i mean by that is alot of these top recruits will be his ht. and have his wt. but not have his strength yet (they may need a yr in a college strength program) but his muscular build is insane so he is bullying his opponents right now. Grayson’s football players are taught excellent form and lifting techniques in the weight room and can hit the floor running. I have seen some kids come from programs in ga that produce great talent but their kids dont know their way around a wt. room and have to be taught everything about lifting bc of horrible technique. That is why freshmen pretty much take a lifting 101 class with their strength coach before being let loose. The d-end that the gamecocks just got last yr (clowney) is an amazing athlete and defensive end. I like those defensive ends coming out of high school that are tall and lean with long arms so when you add bulk to them they dont get stiff hips or lose any athleticism which is usually from not eating and lifting properly. Robert may grow out of his position and get moved inside but who knows. I have talked to alot of other recruits who have trained with him or been invited to these camps and showcases with him and they think Foster is by far the best recruit in the country and i agree. I love his play recognition and the way he gets thru traffic and delivers a violent hit to the ball carrier. Has a lot of power in his hip. foster jumps out of screen at you when you watch his video. Me being a dawg fan would love to have foster if you could only get one of the two but i know for sure right now foster is all bama at the moment. I can tell you this shaq would drive him crazy about the dawgs and i thought he might just sign with us to get him to shut up but when he moved i think our chances went out the window. i just dont understand why robert would go to the acc and not the sec. Most of the top kids in the south want to go to the sec to see how they stack up so that makes me wonder and i do not think this is where he signs at in Feb. He will decommit at some pt and then may come back to clemson but this is far from over now the heat will get put on him from bama like never befor. Saban will try for him just to prove a point that no one turns down the coach at bama.

Yes, we left because we were afraid of playing SEC teams. It had nothing to do with the completely corrupt and inhumane culture that the SEC was fostering. Nah, that couldn’t have been it.

I am so disappointed that Robert Nkemdiche did not stay in state. I don’t know who turn off our best players the most – Mr Richt or these mean spirit fans in this state. I wish you well Robert Nkemdiche. I hope Montravius Adams doesn’t read these comments because if he does I doubt he will commit to uga nor tech. The fans in this state are their own worst enemy and don’t even know it..

When my son went to Georgia , 18 of his classmates were accepted and also went to Georgia. AN 18 year old coming out of high school and on his on for the first time will be a lot more comfortable and happy if he knows somebody.
Even though I wish he would go to Georgia I don’t blame him any for picking Clemson with some of his friends all ready committed.

As a UGA graduate, I visited Clemson in the 80’s….it does have a small, hometown feeling which appeals to a lot of players. Dabo is youg and a great recruitor. But UGA fans: is one player really going to make a difference unless it is Herschel Walker or Bo Jackson? Probably not. We have a great DC who knows how to teach young players. Look at how well he did last year in the first few games with some of our players who were freshmen when other players were hurt or suspended. I love our DC — wish he was our head coach.

We need to stop wasting our time recruiting players from Grayson High School. Their coach is a Bama grad and they will never go to UGA.
