Robert Nkemdiche: Clemson lands nation’s No. 1 recruit … “It’s family man!”

Robert Nkemdiche, the nation’s No. 1 overall college football prospect, has committed to Clemson.

The 6-foot-5, 275-pound defensive end from Grayson High School made the unexpected announcement during a visit to Clemson on Thursday.

“It’s family man!” Nkemdiche said in a text message to the AJC, confirming his commitment to Clemson.

Robert Nkemdiche (No. 1 jersey) in Clemson gear with his Grayson teammates, sent out by Wayne Gallman on Twitter

There’s a lot of connections between Nkemdiche and Clemson that would make it feel like a football family: Two of his Grayson teammates, DB David Kamara (Nkemdiche’s best friend since middle school) and RB Wayne Gallman, have already committed to Clemson. There’s an extra level of trust with Clemson coach Dabo Swinney because he roomed together and played football at Alabama with Grayson coach Mickey Conn, who has helped Nkemdiche navigate through the recruiting process. Clemson is located only 100 miles away from Grayson High School, keeping Nkemdiche within close proximity to his support network.

It was an amazing turn of events for Clemson, which traditionally recruits well in the state of Georgia. Clemson failed to sign any Georgia prospects last February and now has  landed the nation’s No. 1 prospect from Georgia, along with two of his teammates.

Nkemdiche and Kamara went to Clemson on Wednesday for a three-day visit, and Kamara set things in motion by committing to the Tigers soon after arriving on campus. The next day, Nkemdiche followed with his pledge to the Tigers. The timing was surprising because Nkemdiche had been hinting that he would likely wait on making his college decision until after  his senior season — so he could take some official visits.

Clemson has been listed among Nkemdiche’s favorite schools, along with Alabama and Ole Miss. Robert, at one time or another, has also expressed heavy interest in UGA, LSU, Mississippi State and Florida, among others.

CHECK BACK ANY MINUTE FOR ANOTHER COMMIT …

Funny so many people hating on Clemson, you would think they were the defending national champs!

If Clemson is sooo awful, why so much hate?

Fred, does the name Derrick Henry ring a bell. If Clemson thinks that they can hold on to this wishy washy kid, then good luck to them. I’m sure Clemson will have a great many head aches before this kid actually signs on the dotted line.

UGA fans are happy this kid didn’t commit to Bama??? This is a victory for you all..Good grief, I remember when you would be upset you didn’t get a player….now UGA even getting these players is not even in the discussion….check the bama boards on al.com…..fans are saying best of luck, he’s just another 5 star recruit Bama was after…win some, lose some…uhhhh…players that is, not meaningful games. This kid will be a big fish in a small pond…like Clowney ay USC…but never will he hoist a crystal ball….not at Clemson…roll tide…let’s go win #15 this year!!!

Kentucky and Miss St wouldn’t have a prayer in the ACC. SEC fans really need to wake up and realize that just because Alabama and LSU are good does not mean that the other 12 teams in the conference are any good. Pretty much all of them are average to below average. Miss St and Kentucky are way below average.

Did clem—son, give up 70 points in a bowl game and day–boo fired his “D” coor and put all the blame on him instead of taking the blame for letting his team stay out all night smoking dope.

Clemson is letting the players run the prison and they simple hope for lots of tallent to rule the day.

day–boo will be fired this year and robert will chose ole miss!!!—my sources tell me he loves to party and he favors white chicks—–another 5* down the tubes

I love hearing all you SEC homers whine. Clemson had SEC talent last year when we beat Auburn… How about taking Auburn to OT the year they went undefeated. Clemson is still young and didn’t put it all together last year, but we are coming. Welcome to the family Robert!

I really thought he was bound for LSU but Dabo hit a grand slam today! Clemson made a statement, congrats to them Robert, Kamara, and Gallman.

Didn’t see all of this so soon but recruiting is a crazy business. And no I highly doubt the #1 recruit in the country flips.

Going to Clemson is a great move if the goal is to be a Top 5 pick in the NFL Draft. College championships are nice and all but which conference provides for an easier path to being perceived as a top pick? Julius Peppers Part 2. Dominate a weaker league.

Where are all the bama boys? They stink up the ajc blogs all day and night and because they have plenty of free time on their hands. When your only work each month is cashing a welfare check time free time is plentiful. Honestly, though this has to be the most bama free blog about recruiting I have seen in months. I for one am really enjoying it.

Congrats again Robert and Clemson. I look forward to watching Georgia score against you a lot in 2013 and 2014. It will also be amusing to watch you help shut down the trade school. Granted that is no big task but it will still be hilarious.

This is the reality of the SEC vs ACC. The SEC is two good teams and 12 average to below average teams. The ACC is 12 average to below average teams. In other words, good job riding Saban, and Miles coattails in an effort to make your team look good. UGA fans should have been praying for this guy to go to Bama so they could keep using Bama as the reason for why they are so good. Maybe one day you guys will contribute also.

I read post after post of obnoxious bama fans laughing and taunting Dawg fans about recruits that were bama “locks “. When these “locks ” slip away, the bama fans do too. Unfortunately, they (the bama fans) come back. Because of your rude fans, you can expect little sympathy or respect. Actually, everybody and I mean everybody is waiting for Michigan to kick you a$$e$. Also waiting for the next probation which won’t be long now…

GTBob is a troll.

LSU x2, UF x2, Bama x2, and Auburn have all won BCS championships in the past decade. UGA has finished in the Top 10 several times in the same time span. Arkansas has been a Top 10 team. South Carolina has been decent lately too. May as well throw in Tennessee since they won the first BCS championship even though they’ve been down lately. More than riding coat tails.

Nobody cares about the last decade. People care about now. UGA is bad. Tennessee is worse. Florida is completely lost. Arkansas doesn’t have Petrino anymore. When South Carolina starts to look like a good team then you know the SEC is struggling. Meanwhile Alabama and LSU will continue to laugh and obliterate everyone.

GTBob,
If UF is “completely lost”‘ then what does that say about Tech? Since when is the best overall record since 1990 a bad thing? Since when is 8 conference titles and 3 NC’s a bad thing? You can only dream that Tech will be “lost” one day.

bama boys act like only Georgia and auburn and tenn fans hate them. Every college football fan hates bama and it has nothing at all to do with your bought and paid for mythical championships. It has everything to do with your dirt stupid white trash redneck toothless welfare recipient fans. gator fans are obnoxious but they have the beach and their fair share of hot co-eds. auburn fans are loudmouths but we have a lot of history and they obviously get every alabama student who actually wants a job after college techies are annoying but they have their ……ummmm okay never mind techies.

My point is no one likes bama boys because they have nothing at all in the slightest other than living vicariously through a bunch of teenage boys. It doesn’t matter that most of their fans can barely read, the ones that can manage a sentence or two are just as obnoxious as the vast majority that have to sign a x to cash their government assistance.
