Robert Nkemdiche: Clemson lands nation’s No. 1 recruit … “It’s family man!”

Robert Nkemdiche, the nation’s No. 1 overall college football prospect, has committed to Clemson.

The 6-foot-5, 275-pound defensive end from Grayson High School made the unexpected announcement during a visit to Clemson on Thursday.

“It’s family man!” Nkemdiche said in a text message to the AJC, confirming his commitment to Clemson.

Robert Nkemdiche (No. 1 jersey) in Clemson gear with his Grayson teammates, sent out by Wayne Gallman on Twitter

There’s a lot of connections between Nkemdiche and Clemson that would make it feel like a football family: Two of his Grayson teammates, DB David Kamara (Nkemdiche’s best friend since middle school) and RB Wayne Gallman, have already committed to Clemson. There’s an extra level of trust with Clemson coach Dabo Swinney because he roomed together and played football at Alabama with Grayson coach Mickey Conn, who has helped Nkemdiche navigate through the recruiting process. Clemson is located only 100 miles away from Grayson High School, keeping Nkemdiche within close proximity to his support network.

It was an amazing turn of events for Clemson, which traditionally recruits well in the state of Georgia. Clemson failed to sign any Georgia prospects last February and now has  landed the nation’s No. 1 prospect from Georgia, along with two of his teammates.

Nkemdiche and Kamara went to Clemson on Wednesday for a three-day visit, and Kamara set things in motion by committing to the Tigers soon after arriving on campus. The next day, Nkemdiche followed with his pledge to the Tigers. The timing was surprising because Nkemdiche had been hinting that he would likely wait on making his college decision until after  his senior season — so he could take some official visits.

Clemson has been listed among Nkemdiche’s favorite schools, along with Alabama and Ole Miss. Robert, at one time or another, has also expressed heavy interest in UGA, LSU, Mississippi State and Florida, among others.

He will be a little above average, i that, in the ACC, that’s all. He would not be a star in the SEC; all the hipe for such a let down! His big head matches his big frame, big and stupid, what is he thinking? Good pick up for Clemson!

I would have gone sec without a doubt. Maybe south Carolina to play with clowney. Would have been #1 draft pick. Gilmore and Ingram went in first round. Branch went in the late 2nd…..I would check out gamecocks. Beat Clemson 3 years in a row.

It’s just an internet rumor is right. Why would any top recruit choose to play in the ACC rather than the SEC? This makes your question his decision making ability. However, it would be funny to watch him flatten Ga Tech players all over the field.

Mr. SEC,

Perhaps you are affiliated with one of the lesser SEC schools, because you are not much of a judge of football talent if you think Robert is only “little above average”. In fact, you don’t know squat.

You SEC idiots really like to beat your chest don’t you? Good Gosh the SEC has only been relevant since 2006. The ACC has been around a heck of a lot longer than that!…. just kidding. But still, you have this Superiority Complex. The ACC is a good Football league, maybe not on the same level as the SEC but it’s good.

Hey Southside Seminole, my most hated team by far is the Seminoles. I find it hard to believe that I agree with a Seminole. Seminoles and Dawgs talk smack all the time. The difference is that y’all back it up from time to time. I like your Miss State of the east analogy. I always use the GA is the Wisconsin of the SEC. They win the SEC once a decade and then go play in their annual Capital One Bowl.

Good luck to RN and the other Gwinnett football players. The one to one half hour drive from Athens to the most fertile counties in north metro atlanta once again are pilfered by opponents. I know the excuse is that we cannot sign all the players in GA. That is 100% fact when UGA coaches cannot sign the academically qualified and top athletes out of the top competitive counties in Georgia.

Top 7 on 7 passing QB’s in passing offensive schemes year round against top competition and we promise a kid on the coast in a running offense a scholly. Metro Atl QB’s to date: Vandy, LSU, UCLA, Arizona, Alabama, and more to come — the one qualified QB on campus currently is being wasted by RIcht, Mason along with his family need to move on before 2012 school year starts. Richt will be gone after 2013 and the promise of 2014 if made will not matter. Red shirt, what a waste.

We actually got CU fans here? They finally managed to come out from under that rock they are so fond of rubbing after giving up a BCS bowl record of 70 points last Jan? I realize they are the defending ACC champions, thats almost like being the prettiest pig. My question is, when RN decides he wants to take a visit to Bama, LSU or wherever, Dabo has the same policy of no visits after a committment, will he pull the offer? Or will he bendover and take it from a top recruit who wants to make an official somewhere else. RN will want to visit, he has always felt entitled, and taking official visits is on his agenda.

It is possible he liked it at Clemson, and that should be good enough for you dolts slamming a 17 year old for his decision. Plus, playing in the ACC didn’t hurt Bowers or Spiller or tons of other players.

Clemson has some of the best fans in the country, and I’m happy for them. Congrats to Robert and Clemson. Maybe Dabo ain’t so stupid after all.

Take a look at 5 year history of NFL DRAFT. D Linemen drafted by MIGHTY SEC schools:
Auburn: 4, ARK: 1, UF: 2, BAMA: 3, SC: 4,
Only LSU (6) & UGA (7) had more drafted than the 5 from (as Clemson doesn’t exactly have a bunch of talented d-linemen like you’ll see at an SEC school).
