Tyren Jones: Alabama RB commit shoots down UGA rumors

Tyren Jones said if there’s a “Derrick Henry domino effect” among top running backs, he’s not going to be part of it.

Jones is arguably the state of Georgia’s No. 1 prospect at running back who committed to Alabama over UGA and Clemson last February.

Meanwhile, Derrick Henry is the running back from Yulee, Fla., who is UGA’s top-rated commitment for 2013.

Henry fueled speculation that he may flip to Alabama after making strong comments about the Crimson Tide, and then visiting with Nick Saban for a few days this past weekend. Henry officially remains committed to UGA but said on Twitter that he will “make a statement soon.”

Which leads us to back to Tyren Jones.

There are rumors that if Henry flips from UGA to Alabama, it would create a domino effect of top running backs switching schools – like you often see among QB prospects, including Jones going from Alabama to UGA.

“Yes, I’ve been hearing all that stuff, and it’s just rumors,” Jones told the AJC on Tuesday night. “People are trying to get me to go over to Georgia. I’m not worried about all the rumors. I’m 100-percent committed to Alabama.”

The 5-foot-8, 192-pound Jones went to Alabama football camp last week, worked out even though he was already committed, and met with Saban. “Coach Saban said he was happy that I worked out because some of the other recruits that showed up were just chilling,” Jones said. “He told me to keep working hard and that he’s looking forward to coaching me next year.”

When Jones was at Alabama, he also heard other recruits talking about Henry. “I don’t know his exact situation, but some kids were saying that [Henry] doesn’t care if he plays linebacker or fullback. He just wants some playing time, rather than sitting over there waiting at Georgia.”

What if Henry decides to go to Alabama to play running back? Would that make Jones have second thoughts? “I mean, I would wonder about it,” he said. “But I’m not really fazed. I’m not concerned what he does because there’s competition everywhere. If he comes to Alabama, then we’ll work hard and compete together. There’s competition at every school.”

For the record, UGA has been keeping in touch with Jones, along with Clemson, Auburn and LSU.

The photo that UGA fans cringe to see. 5-star RB Derrick Henry tweeted this picture of him wearing an Alabama jersey, asking "What do you think?"

And Tyren’s teammate at Walton High School, offensive lineman Brandon Kublanow, recently committed to UGA and is trying to convince Jones to join him with the Bulldogs. Then again, Jones is trying to talk Kublanow into attending Alabama. “We always joke back and forth about it,” Jones said.

While Jones says he remains loyal to Alabama, he still intends to take a couple of official visits to other schools. Before Jones went public with his commitment to Alabama, he made it known to the coaches.  “I told them that I plan on taking a couple of other official visits just so I can get out there and see other campuses I haven’t seen yet … they said they were fine with that,” said Jones, who hasn’t picked any schools to visit yet.

“Before I make any decision on where else I’m going to visit, I’m going to talk it over again with [Alabama] to let them know what I’m doing.”

Last year as a junior, Jones was the leading rusher in the state’s largest classification, helping Walton reach the state championship game, where it lost to Grayson.

I am would be more concerned about losing Brandon Kublanow, than losing Henry, we need as many O lineman as possible. Go Dawgs!

It sounds like Tyren Jones has a great work ethic and understands what it takes to succeed. Wish him success at Alabama as long as it’s not against the Dawgs.

I sorta like this Jones kid. Wish he was going to be a Dawg.
Well henry made it easy for the Dawgs. They just play him at LB next year!

Henry will have a better chance playing RB next year at UGA than bammer. He would be a good compliment to the smaller backs, need a big bruiser.

What esle was he suppose to say. If Henry flips? The kid will be looking at other options. And if not i think that leaves the door wide open for the dawgs to get Kamara. As long as we get one of the 3. I think our backfield will be set for a while.

There is more competition at Alabama than the recent articles indicate. Kenyan Drake is on his way there as well. He’s a four-star back that can hold his own with these others guys. If Henry thinks Bama land will be an easier road to playing time than UGA, he hasn’t been given all the info.

I hope Henry doesn’t think he’s going to see the field earlier at Bama than he would at UGA. I think he’d be mistaken there.

not to sound like a prude or a “college coach”..lol, but Georgia does not need RB’s and LB’s, they need offensive linemen; big, nasty, 5 star rated linemen; the offensive line needs an influx of talent and competition for playing time. I like some of the one’s Georgia has so far, but none of them strike me as All SEC-caliber. Of course, one of them will more than likely be voted All SEC 1st team at least once, but will he be nasty? will he be a for sure first-rounder? Average talent and “nice guys” on the o-line has been at or near the top of Georgia’s problems going on 5 years.

That’s all fine, but let’s hope Jones doesn’t ” break a leg” and be shown the back of the bus at Bama……cause that’s what they do over there. History tells us so.

Brandon Kublanow isn’t on the wish list at Alabama. Jones will be a really good player in Nick’s system and will have the OL to help him have success. Other than adding a 5* to our list the addition of Henry doesn’t seem to make sense but Nick Saban believes it does so fine. Nick has his roster in such a position that he is recruiting some players for certain situations and this guy (henry)may fall into that process. Some football programs are just trying to fill up the numbers ..cough cough.

Don’t see Henry playing sooner at Alabama than at UGA. The backfield at Alabama is more loaded than UGA. Think they already have 2 RB’s committed for next year and got at least 2 from this past class. UGA needs LBs for this class and there is a chance to play as a true freshman with all the defensive guys leaving next year. Plus a bigger RB would be nice too if he stays at RB.

DISCLAIMER: Newspapers are failing, so they can only afford bottom of the barrel talent. That being said. Derrick Henry will never play a single down as a running back in college. Reports have him at 6′3″ 255 lbs as a 17 year old boy. No matter what Richt, tricky nick, or any coach tells him, that dream of carrying the rock in college will never happen. Also, despite his physical characteristics he is soft and hates playing defense, so my educated prediction is that he will be a enormous bust. With the speed of SEC defenses, a running back with less than spectacular speed will never make an impact in the sport. Mark Richt promises him that he would play rb and that is set in stone. No matter what that little devil tells him, he will never play a single snap at rb as an elephant. He does not have a solid character and we don’t need him; we are well on our way to 30+ recruits and he is doing a disservice to himself if he picks bama, becauce for all his faults as a coach, Mark Richt is a man of his word and truly believes in being altruistic (even if that is a historically and proven route to failure). I love him for it and GO DAWGS!

UGA Dawg91….The backfields at BAMA and UGA are both loaded. I just cannot see a kid the size of Henry being a RB. You have to figure that as a 17 year old, me is probably not done growing and right now he is 6′3, 245. I cant speak to the LB’s at UGA, but that an ideal size for a LB at UA is 6′4, 255-260. I can also see him as an H-Back/TE. He may start at RB wherever he goes but he needs to be open to another positions as I just dont see him in the rotation at UA or UGA.

As for Saban being lazy, he is after one UGA commit. ONE. I guess I can say the same about Richt since he is after Reuben Foster who is committed to BAMA. Nah….I know better.

Kind of boring article so lets try to get this moving in a good discussion:

Alabama and UGA both have a stable of RB’s currently, all young. Alabama has stable of LB’s but UGA is very weak after 2012, and I mean very weak. If Derrick Henry changes mind wants to play LB he will stay with UGA. Other opportunities exist: Tenn, South Carolina, Vandy all three could use Derrick Henre at RB and if it does not work out can move to defense LB or DE. If he is looking for true opportunity early to play then that is the best option. I am surprised and curious why he would limit himself, his favorite coach moved from South Carolina to Tenn, I believe he just wants attention at this point. Now to Kamara, same situation exist, why would he get into such a messy situation with Ala or Uga. The best two schools needing a running back like Kamara in 2013 class are South Carolina and Vandy, Tenn may prove to be a good place but many questions will still exist after 2012 season moving to 2013. I dont understand why any top shelf running backs would even think about uga or ala, stable is full. Kamara needs to make a decision because I believe that he and Jones are the class of running backs in the south, not Henry.

You are correct kingdaddy. As an Alabama alum & fan, I always liked Georgia growing up as a kid. Never hated them at all. We are not natural enemies. This is about Nick Saban being an incredible recruiter coming into talent rich Georgia (they can’t ALL go to UGA), and some really ignorant so-called Alabama fans. If you are a REAL Alabama fan and gentleman there is no room for bragging. Remember what Coach Bryant said, “Just show class and act like a champion.” Our record speaks for itself. I only wish some of our idiot fans would remember Coach Bryant’s mantra.

Just to let you know UGA isn’t out of the Carl Lawson race at this point even though he’s commited to AU. This guy is being trained by a former Vol in Atlanta and UT is also in the picture. Rumor is the kid really wants to play in a 3-4 more than the 4-3. Both Bama and UGA were on this guy early but both thought he was a bit small but he has grown since the initial eval. Word is Robert N is a LSU lean due to the 4-3 with Clempsum at #2 and Bama #3. A lot of the BS that has gone down by Rob hasn’t been well received back in T-town. Nick does his best to cull trouble early in the recruiting cycle no matter the talent level. You can pay me now or pay me later…etc. you know how richt does it at UGA…

As far as out of conference schedules, Alabama always has a tough, respected opponent.
This year it is Michigan in the kick off classic. The year before it was Penn State. Both teams
