Derrick Henry: UGA’s top recruit de-commits from the Bulldogs (UPDATED)

UGA’s top football recruit de-committed from the Bulldogs on Wednesday.

Derrick Henry, the 5-star tailback from Yulee, Fla., released a statement to recruiting reporters that he was backing off his UGA commitment from last summer.

Henry said he decided to re-open his recruiting because “I was probably a little too quick in making my initial decision and got caught up in the moment, so I apologize for that.”

Henry’s change of heart came after he spent a few days with Alabama’s Nick Saban on an unofficial visit last weekend.

If there’s any good news for UGA, it’s that Henry claims he is still considering the Bulldogs as he moves forward.

Here’s the statement:

“This has been a great experience getting to know so many great coaches and visiting some of the best college football programs in the country. Even though I’ve worked really hard to put myself in this situation, I know I’m blessed to have this opportunity I’m very thankful for that.

“For me personally, this is one of the biggest decisions I’ll make in my life and probably the most important to this point. I want to be 100 percent sure I am making the best choice on where I go to college and to play football. I’m going to open up my recruitment and take some more visits, get as much information as I can, and then decide from there. I was probably a little too quick in making my initial decision and got caught up in the moment so I apologize for that. I’m still considering Georgia and I have nothing but great things to say about their program, but I want to be honest with everyone in the fact that I am going to go over all my options and do what is best for me and my athletic and academic career.

“For the rest of the summer, I am focusing on helping my team have the best season that we can have and achieve our team goals. Please refer any questions about my recruitment to my head coach. I’m not sure when I’ll make a final announcement, but when I have no doubts at all about where I’m going, I’ll let everyone know.

What’s next for UGA? With Henry’s decision, the Bulldogs drop down to 19 commitments for their 2013 class. He was the team’s only commitment at running back. UGA will likely turn up the intensity with other RB targets, including Alvin Kamara of Norcross High School. They will also continue to pursue Walton High School’s Tyren Jones, who is committed to Alabama — and told the AJC he would remain with the Crimson Tide even if Derrick Henry committed there, too.

CHECK BACK ANY MINUTE FOR ANOTHER COMMIT …

A sixteen year old kid committed to UGA last year, it’s hard to commit to anything at 16…give the kid some time an he’ll go where ever his coach leads him. It’s a shame what the world of HS football has become!

Wow I must have had a brain freeze because I did not see that story. At least the AJC didn’t put it at the top of the page like they have done in the past when one of our players were accused of something. I wonder why Ken didn’t cover it in his blog? I don’t see anything about steroids though. He handled two cops so I hope cpj doesn’t hold him out of any games. LOL I’m kidding.

He’s not a running back. After putting on weight in college, he will be too top heavy. He’s a linebacker. Hate to lose him from the Dawgs but he’s another Richard Samuel who thinks he can play running back and wastes 2 years figuring out that he can’t.

SO WHAT!! Ga don’t need him! I think kids like this is not worth having to start with. Hell, GA is loaded at RB, they signed the #1 RB in the country 2 years in a row. It seems to me like Henry don’t want to compete against the other STUD RB’S that GA has. HEY HENRY!! THERE IS NO FREE RIDE AT ANY SCHOOL, PUT UP OR SHUT UP! GO DAWGS!!

There is absolutely no reason for UGA to sign yet another QB.

NONE.

1. Aaron Murray

2. Hutson Mason

3. Christian LeMay

4. Faton Bauta

Not 1 of them has as much as 1 minute in any game, even against Louisiana Lafayette, whom Aaron Murray threw his 5 touchdowns against.

We need a 5th QB ?

Right.

Keep telling yourself, we keep our 1 Top 100 football player committed.

Again, we average now 3.21 for 2013 when Mark Richt all 11 years averages 3.65 for our average recruit, with whom he is 3-16 against teams who actually made it into the AP Poll Top 10.

Our recruit average is WAY LOW and going DOWN.

I wouldn’t be too upset, he barely had 100yds against Buford last year and 75 of them were on a play the last minute of the game against Buford’s reserves. He is too tall to play running back against top defenses week in and week out. Trust me on this Dawg buddies, he will NOT play RB at Bama, he will play something else.

Wet Willie...keep on smiling

Henry is a silent to Bama and you can forget hearing much from him or his coach from now on. No need to make anymore of event out of this than it is after today. These kids should never make a decision after a great visit until they really have time to allow the newness to wear at little. Move along.

@Flo-ri-da or what ever…..get a grip sport and stop making an azz of yourself with your envy. You and UGA will get respect when you earn IT and as of today you’re all out of Tokens and the Champion Machine.

However, you seem to post hate about both Georgia and Ga Tech equally so I doubt you are a fan of either.

You post far too much info albeit fake to be a bama fan so maybe you are a UF of even an Auburn fan. Who knows maybe you could even be a ACC fan.

Tdawg you are correct that Yulee was over matched but he did not break tackles when he had the opportunity and the reason most teams are overmatched is because Buford recruits surrounding counties. There were 2 kids in my community that drove right by Flowery Branch HS on their way to play for Buford.

He is an athlete, probably knows he can be used at multiple positions such as another great recruit from the Peach State has performed in Blake Sims while on the Alabama team. You may still get him as long as he doesn’t read these ‘Dawg comments.

Basically I am shocked on how little UGA fans in general know about how the recruiting process works, nothing is set in stone until the young man signs his LOI on or after February 2nd of next year.

Brown Dog

June 13th, 2012

A couple of things …

1. It’s Connor Mitch, not Mitch Connor.

2. Alabama leads for Kamara. We have a commitment from Foster. What’s the status of the third amigo?

3. The longer this goes on the more likely Henry ends up with a third party.

4. Never a good thing for recruiting momentum when you lose your top-ranked recruit. Without him Georgia’s class takes on more of a packing-peanuts aspect. Is there someone out there to restore the star power?

5. Long way to February.

59bulldawg

Henry will be an early enrollee? Didn’t know that! If so his decommitment is a double whammy because he would count toward 2012 and allow an extra signee for the 2013 class.

I saw it on TV; he still broke 0 tackles. You would run for 500yds behind Buford’s OL against most of the 2A schools they play. I loved it when Calhoon beat their behinds in the Championship game.

Don’t be surprised if Henry doesn’t go to Georgia or Alabama. If he goes to Georgia he will be a Fullback or Linebacker because of his size and we were honest about that , up front. Saban will let him find out for himself that if he wants to play Pro he has a better chance at Fullback or Linebacker. The main reason Saban will be deceptive is because Saban’s philosophy is tell him anything to get him to Alabama because that is one less person Saban has to play against, we will figure where to play him later.
Both Alabama and Georgia has plenty of Tailback’s so don’t be surprised if Henry doesn’t go to Florida or Tennessee.

Georgia doesn’t need anymore running backs we need some more defensive backs to replace the 12 we are going to lose after this year and a few more Offensive Linemen wouldn’t hurt either. I hope Henry recommits but a running back is way down the needs list.

At this point who cares if he plays for Alabama, as a matter of fact, I would rather him play for the Tide instead of Tennessee just in case he turns out to be the real deal. We see Alabama once in a while, we see Tennessee every year. I just do not care about RB’s…..we have much greater needs. I MEAN MUCH GREATER NEEDS…OL, OL, OL, OL. OL and more defensive players for 2013 and 2014.

If you are complaining about D. Henry de-committing to the Dawgs, then you must feel insecure about your own failures. He did exactly the right thing. If his heart wasn’t in it, why must he go on pretending? We all know what Saban will do if he signs: Let him try one or two practices at RB, let him see that about 4 others are ahead of him, and switch him to defense. And Richt would have done the same. Now it’s on the coaching staff to win him back over. Georgia needs to concentrate on winning big games and the rest will take care of itself. You lose one good recruit, so you go and snag another one. Simple enough.
