Derrick Henry: UGA’s top recruit de-commits from the Bulldogs (UPDATED)

UGA’s top football recruit de-committed from the Bulldogs on Wednesday.

Derrick Henry, the 5-star tailback from Yulee, Fla., released a statement to recruiting reporters that he was backing off his UGA commitment from last summer.

Henry said he decided to re-open his recruiting because “I was probably a little too quick in making my initial decision and got caught up in the moment, so I apologize for that.”

Henry’s change of heart came after he spent a few days with Alabama’s Nick Saban on an unofficial visit last weekend.

If there’s any good news for UGA, it’s that Henry claims he is still considering the Bulldogs as he moves forward.

Here’s the statement:

“This has been a great experience getting to know so many great coaches and visiting some of the best college football programs in the country. Even though I’ve worked really hard to put myself in this situation, I know I’m blessed to have this opportunity I’m very thankful for that.

“For me personally, this is one of the biggest decisions I’ll make in my life and probably the most important to this point. I want to be 100 percent sure I am making the best choice on where I go to college and to play football. I’m going to open up my recruitment and take some more visits, get as much information as I can, and then decide from there. I was probably a little too quick in making my initial decision and got caught up in the moment so I apologize for that. I’m still considering Georgia and I have nothing but great things to say about their program, but I want to be honest with everyone in the fact that I am going to go over all my options and do what is best for me and my athletic and academic career.

“For the rest of the summer, I am focusing on helping my team have the best season that we can have and achieve our team goals. Please refer any questions about my recruitment to my head coach. I’m not sure when I’ll make a final announcement, but when I have no doubts at all about where I’m going, I’ll let everyone know.

What’s next for UGA? With Henry’s decision, the Bulldogs drop down to 19 commitments for their 2013 class. He was the team’s only commitment at running back. UGA will likely turn up the intensity with other RB targets, including Alvin Kamara of Norcross High School. They will also continue to pursue Walton High School’s Tyren Jones, who is committed to Alabama — and told the AJC he would remain with the Crimson Tide even if Derrick Henry committed there, too.

Thats a shame. It’s a hard decision to make. I hope he makes the right decision. Let’s go after some other running back. There are others out there. Everybody saw this one coming. That Saban is an excellent recruiter. Build it and they will come.

Leave the kid alone and let him make up his mind. He will go where he feels he can best prepare for the future. Whatever that is. Good luck to him.

He’s young. Let him take his officials and make up his own mind. As much as I would like to see him in red and black, I would rather take a kid who really wants to be a dawg and is willing to work for it. He was warned by CMR and others not to commit too quickly. Plenty of time to make up his mind.

What makes him our “top recruit”? Is it just the star system? Okay, I get that — but at the same time, it’s hard to feel bad about a class that’s already got so many top players on board. And let’s not forget, this is the same path traced by Tramel Terry earlier in the year, and now he’s back and he’s all Dawg.

I respect the kid for taking this seriously and making sure he’s fully committed. But I wholeheartedly resist the notion that it’s a “big blow” to an already outstanding class.

I understand what he is saying but your word is your word and thats ALL you got.

He does NOT know what the word COMMITTMENT means obviously. Like MOST people getting married today. You going to tell your wife oops, sorry, I got caught up in the moment and now I am going to go date some other women and then see if I still want to be with you.

Stick with UGA and honor your word and committment Henry.

I’m with CT. Let him go. We need guys like Gurley and Marshall that want to come in and compete for a spot rather than have a spot cleared for them. If you’re the best you’re gonna play. We’ve got plenty of talent and plenty of time to get more.

He’s young, and he was just too caught up in the moment at the time. Our best bet right now is Alvin Kamara. But, I always think he’ll come back, and he’ll realize he made a wrong decision.

WOW DAWG NATION TAKE DEEP BREATHS!!! look guys truth is. The kid felt like he may of jumped the gun. He has not commited anywhere. Lets be CLASSY about this. Lets not Bash him like some other fans from another SEC schooled bashed on Crowell. Do yal remember Darrick Rodgers and how hypered we were for him and he ended up at TN… Did we really need him? No we did not. Now than Derrick Henry he is 17 OR 18 and he has all kinds of people in his ear right now. Who knows he may come back to the DAWGS. If not it will be ok. geeeezzz /

Top 10 reason UGA doesn’t want Derrick …..Now

He can’t catch the ball
He doesn’t want to be a dog then get gone
Alvin will be better and commit before Opie and Aunt Bee go off today
He’s too talk to be a good RB
Too many great RB’s already in/headed to Athens
He’s too big to fit in a cell at Clarke

If Henry don’t wanna commit to UGA 100 percent, then let him go. Let’s focus on getting Alvin and flipping Reuben to the Dawgs.

Nick Satan will help you get rich in the NFL, but Mark Rich is a good man, he don´t drank!!! He will be our coach for ever and ever amen. We don´t want players hung up on success. Me and my family thank the Music City Bowl is good enough anyways. Better to be .500 and in the heaven that is Athens, GA than .1000 and in the hell that is Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Now that it is official, you idiots dont need to apologize from weeks ago when I told you this was in fact already the case. One UGA player that decommited once, then recommited, is still on the fence about decommiting again and is looking at three other schools with two running out front for his services. Try me again boys:

McGarity will end up being the failure of the football program by how poorly he handled the Mark Richt and Tood Grantham situation on contracts. For you kool aid drinkers, keep drinking cause jim jones followers had no idea of what was going on either.

4:09 pm

Oh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a giant loss. Its not like we dont have two #1-2 RB recruits in the nation 2 years in a row. AJC, go ahead and make this a giant deal and forget about the 19 other recruits we have and the 10-11 more we are still going to add. Rueben is flipping and we are still going to scoop a few other big names. NO BIG DEAL. Wish you the best. Alabama will be going downhill in 2 years again

He is not the back that Gurley is I have seen both of them. He will never play a down at Bama as a running back..they will play him as a fullback or possibly tight end if he stays on the offensive side of the ball.

Cant blame him for decommitting.

Probably sobered up and realized what a dump Athens is.
