Jay Woods: Georgia Tech and UGA make top 11

Georgia Tech and UGA made the cut for Jay Woods (AJC)

Georgia Tech and UGA made the cut for Jay Woods (AJC)

Jay Woods, who is one of the state’s leaders in football scholarship offers with around 30, narrowed his list down to 11 on Monday. Here they are from the 6-foot-2, 278-pound defensive tackle from Jackson High School (in no order):

  • Missouri
  • UGA
  • Georgia Tech
  • Clemson
  • UCF
  • Kentucky
  • Duke
  • Vanderbilt
  • South Carolina
  • Nebraska
  • Texas A&M

“These are the 11 schools recruiting me the hardest, so I’m going to focus on them,” Woods said. “My three priorities in choosing a school  will be education, my relationship with the coaches, and the opportunity to come in as a freshman and make an impact.”

Woods said he will likely wait until taking five official visits after his senior season before making his decision. “I’m not trying to rush things; this is supposed to be fun.”

I was a very good athlete when I was young but was too short to be considered Pro material but one thing I know is ; when Grantham took up for his defensive back in the Vanderbilt game that one thing did more good than anything to get recruits interested in playing under him. That is exactly the kind of coach I had and is appreciated by every player on the team. To know that your coach has your back means the world to a player. Now that doesn’t mean he want get in your face a chew your rear end up but it does prove he cares a lot about his players.
So for some of the Georgia fans that criticized him for that, never played competitive sports in their live. Good players never take it personal when they get chewed out because they are team players and only want to improve but they love a coach that will back them unconditionally.
Grantham coached in the Pro’s for 11 years and were used to being around MEN so there was a learning curve for him also. What happened never bothered me , any but for the fans that it did bother, how about giving him a break. He will prove to be a great coach and an even better recruiter.

Nowhere in this article did he say education was his top priority. It was important though and I’m pretty sure, UGA was near the top (#2) of his list. All this talk about who has the smartest school, is just that, TALK… Not sure what Missouri has to offer other than they are out of state. Good Luck to Jay and everyone in the recruiting picture. Go Dogs and Go Michigan!!!

We beat a 4-9 Alabama
We beat another Alabama not in Coaches’ Poll Top 25
We beat Alabama same year Louisiana Monore did
We LOST to Alabama to START this SLIDE DOWNHILL

Where is the upward trend ?

-lost 7 in a row AP Poll Top 10 teams
-lost 9 in a row AP Poll Top 25 teams
-lost 9 in row SEC teams finishing winning SEC record

-signed 109 recruits to scholarships for 2012 -have 71 remaining of them, after our attrition
-beat up another little girl last month, pleadguilty to it
-arrested drugs in Alabama, paid $ 1034 fine on that last month
-no suspension for drugs in Alabama $ 1034 fine yet
-5 failed NCAA Drug Test (some for 3rd time) Spring Practice
-no suspension for any of those 5 failed NCAA drug tests yet either
-signed head coach to extension, NO RAISE
-signed head coach to extension, cost $ 1.8 m buyout end 2013, cost $ 1.2 m buyout end 2014, cost only $ 600 thousand end 2015 to fire him and buy him out of this contract that therefore took him 8 months to sign
-average recruit 3.3 for UGA and 4.56 Southern Cal, 4.00 Ohio State, 3.93 Texas and the 3.30 is based upon our only 2 commitments of the Top 100 players as QB and RB neither one of which would we lose 1 minute of sleep over flipping because of our depth at those 2 positions.

Alabama is on NCAA PROBATION having won 2 of the 3 current BCS NC ?

Mark Richt self-imposed NCAA PROBATION 71 only remaining on scholarship today 12 June 2012 of the 109 he over-signed to scholarships for 2012. That’s an NCAA self-imposed penalty of 14 under 85-scholarship limit.

Which probation looks worse ?

1. Alabama with 2 of 3 current National Championships ?

“Brewmaster,” you’re here lecturing to me with a handle like THAT? Now how can you think ANYONE would take anything you say seriously? When Paul Johnson looks a recruit in the eye and tells them one in six graduates is a millionaire, do you think he shouldn’t use THAT as an incentive to show the value of a Tech education?

Now I’ll ask you this; how many Division 1 head coaches in America can walk into a recruit’s home, and have that same conversation with him and his parents/family? Mark Richt? I think not…

Like I said in response to the original asinine comment about “wealth,” I’d just as soon discuss the topic of the blog, but if YOU want to drop your drawers, go for it…I promise you, you’ll lose; not bragging, just saying as a matter of fact.

But at this point, I’m not going to continue to have this discussion with you because you aren’t worth my time.

Despite a post that proves the aau is a pathetic joke that picks it’s members according to the good old boy system all the techies are still thumping their man boobs about it as if it actually means something.

We do know a degree from tech paves the way for a career in birdhouse building and sales. Other than smart aka 5150 aka kool air bar aka a few dozen other aliases I’m not even sure any other techie that posts here has a job. Sorry bugboys rubbing your boyfriends feet when he gets home from a hard day of slinging rocks on the corner isn’t a job.

Don’t feel too bad. cpj will never live up to his self proclaimed genius title but he is a champion liar.

Good ol’ boy network, sometimes known as an old boys’ club, describes a system of social networking/cronyism perceived to exist among communities and social strata. These networks are perceived to be located throughout the world. It is sometimes taken to refer to informal legal, judicial, social, religious, business, and political associations among members, (”good ol’ boys”).

In 2003 UGA joined Harvard, Yale, and Brown universities as the only schools with recipients of Rhodes, Marshall, Truman, and Goldwater scholarships—four of the most prestigious scholarships awarded to American undergraduates. Funny, I didn’t see Tech on that list.

Of course, Tech hasn’t had many Rhode Scholars. The majority of Rhodes Scholars through the years have come from liberal arts universities. Tech is actually fortunate to have any at all, because of the way they have been chosen. In fact, and this is a quote: “At one time, only students at Ivy League colleges were eligible to be Rhodes Scholars, but now students of almost any American university can receive the award.” Another FACT about Rhodes Scholarships (again a quote) is that: “Please keep in mind though that the Rhodes Scholarship competition has never been a national one, so state and institutional comparisons are not particularly relevant or meaningful.”

Note those final few words —- state and institutional comparisons are not particularly relevant or meaningful

Why hasn’t ken reported on that roid rage tech player that attacked 2 cops in athens last weekend? The ajc won’t allow comments on the story even though they waited half a week before they posted a small story about the psycho. If it had been a Georgia player the ajc would have put out a special edition and we would have seen updates every day about it. I wonder how many stories about the trade school the ajc has buried over the years?

Is the north avenue trade school football program out of control? It sure seems like it when some kid obviously jacked up on roids or meth or crack attacks cops when they try to escort him out of a bar. I wonder how cpj will handle this humiliating incident? Did cpj provide the steroids the kid was on or did he get them from another coach or player? Too bad the ajc refuses to investigate anything at all that puts the trade school in a negative light or we might get some answers.

Michael I don’t blame you since you cover Georgia but it’s a shame some of your fellow “journalists” ignore their beats.

Jacketman, No one on this bolg is impressed with your BMWs or beach houses. I’ll bet that the ratio of Tech football players who have used up their eligiblility do not fit your 1 in 6 millionaires claim. How about the ratio of players who make it to the NFL ? These players are hoping for the NFL dream, not your dream. By the way, did you attend UGA Law School, by far the best in the state ? How many millionaires have attended UGA Law School, Med School, Accounting School, Business School, Vet School, and the list goes on ? Probably a hell of a lot more than from your 1 in 6 bs school. By the way, the only difference between a BMW and a porcupine is that the BMW’s pricks are are on the inside.

Sorry, Brewmaster, Emory has the top law school in the state of Georgia, a full 16 places higher ranked nationally. And UGA has only the beginnings of a medical school. The real medical college of Georgia is in Augusta. So there may be millionaires with pre-med degrees from UGA, but they don’t have their full medical degrees from there.
