Georgia Tech’s entire recruiting class gets the green light

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson scored 17 qualifiers with his 2012 class (AJC)

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson scored 17 qualifiers with his 2012 class (AJC)

While other schools sweat it out, Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson said his entire recruiting class has met academic requirements and will report this summer.

The Yellow Jackets signed 17 recruits last February, with QB-Athlete Dennis Andrews of Tallahassee enrolling early in college. Georgia Tech expects 15 more to show up around June 20 for summer school, while DT Adam Gotsis of Australia is still being processed.

“Yes, I think everybody is good to go with admissions,” Johnson told the AJC. “We may have an issue with [Gotsis] because of all the paperwork with him being an international student. Georgia Tech normally doesn’t allow foreign students to come in early. They usually come in when school starts, so we’re working on that.

“[Gotsis] will be here when camp starts for sure. He just may not be here in summer school.”

Johnson said he really hasn’t been worrying about any of his signees meeting college entrance requirements.

“The nature of what we do, and that nature of Georgia Tech, we’re not going to have very many guys that we can take that don’t qualify. Historically, that’s just not going to be the case here.”

Meanwhile, UGA is waiting on at least two of its signees, including DT John Atkins.

Good for GT and good for this class of kids. Hopefully Atkins and Floyd can get it done, and UGA’s full class will be there by July/August. Go Dawgs!

In an ideal world, the academic qualification of college football players would not be either and issue or a cause for celebration, but that’s apparently not the reality in which we live.

Personally, I’m more interested in how many of them graduate.

@GTFan2012… reality is that we only focus on these people because they are exceptional athletes. no one cares what they do after they leave your university. do i want the to succeed of course i do but once they walk off campus you will know nothing about them or what they are doing. in the mean time, while in college, do you what you were brought to the school to do, Play Football. It is laughable to think that every GT signee would qualify if they weren’t a football player. That’s why talking grades and test scores should be left to the advisers of the school. This is a football blog.

Emphasis is on being a good student, a good athlete and becoming an even better person. Nobody and no school is perfect, but I have always liked the way Tech tries to establish the right priorities. Some folks worry about switching to the best football conference of the “month” and others think they’ll beat the odds to the NFL if they choose one school over the other. There are other great schools too, but you can’t beat the Tech approach. When you enroll at Tech you are qualified to be there. It is not always the case, but generally the staying power and the graduation power is up to you. Go Jackets!

Richt’s has had 30+ scholarship players fail out get kicked out or left the team. Johnson doesn’t have that problem so we don’t need to draft 40 players to get BACK to 85.

Be careful what you ask for my fellow UGA fans about football signees and graduation. Why do you think we run players off and kick them off the team. Why do you think Richt give 5 to 10 scholarships to white walk on’s each year. This is not to be taken as a racist statement but facts do spell out the truth about what is and has taken place. Exploiting many of these young men before they are ready is sick and it seems that our all so mighty look at me I am a christain coach Richt really is easily swayed millions and millions of ways.

Game Changer – The difference b/t CMR and Spurrier is clear. On one hand, CMR cuts a guy like Zach Mettenberger after one offense. Many believe Mett may one day start for UGA. He clearly has the talent, as he is expected to start for LSU in the fall after spending a year at JUCO. On the other hand you have SOS… and how many chances did he give Garcia again?

A story like this is even more significant given the statistics recently shared by ESPN on the post-retirement bankruptcy rate of pro athletes. Shows there needs to be at least some emphasis on helping make sure these kids get their degrees and prepare for success in a non-athletic field. Kudos to the Tech kids and also to the coaches for selecting recruits who can make the grade in the classroom as well as on the field.

1928 Tech had ALL the big wire service Votes
1951 11-0-1 beat 10-1 Tennessee but AP says the Vols Hahaha
1952 12-0 Tech but AP picked 9-0 Michigan State
1956 10-1 AP picked 10-0 Oklahoma
1990 11-0-1 AP picked the 5th down and loser Colorado.

Both sides, does it really matter who has won more NC’s? The fact is neither of our teams have done a whole lot the past couple of years. Let’s hope that changes for both teams this year.
Just my opinion, but if you have not won a NC in the past 5 years, it does not matter what past history is. For instance I’ll use my universityUGA, If UGA won 20 NC’s before 1950 does it really matter? We have not won anything since 1980. For the 2 schools to be talking about who wins NC’s is crazy. It’s like me bragging that I had hair 15 years ago. Big deal!

The issue Georgie tek has in recruiting is that Paul Johnson always ends up ranked the # 52 recruiting class nationally in this the 2nd best state in the country for high school players who go on to play in the NFL, and then they promptly go out and lose to our coach 10 of his 11 years here.

so uga should probably get credit for this MNC as well, albeit with an asterisk. and georgia tech ended up 5th in the ap pol that season.

interesting sidenote – “On September 19, in Louisville, Georgia defeated Kentucky, 7-6. The following Friday, Georgia defeated the Jacksonville Naval Air Station, 14-0, in Macon.”

uga playing a naval air station in their second game of the season? times have changed…

Yes, I’d like to see UGA win another one before tech does, However, I would not make such a statement because, my opinion, tech is only a Tommy Frazier style QB and some solid defensive recruits away from competing for a NC. Both teams have the same chance. Specualtion is great, but that’s why the games are played!
