The 6-foot-4, 290-pounder from Milton High School picked Wake Forest over North Carolina and South Florida, among his 11 football scholarship offers. He is projected to play center in college.

“It was everything about Wake Forest … everything, honestly they’ve got everything,” Helms told the AJC. “It’s a great education, it’s close to home, is playing in the ACC, it’s an opportunity to start as a freshman. I mean, they aren’t going to guarantee me anything but I have the opportunity to earn it [a starting position].”

Helms said he had moderate interest from Georgia and Georgia Tech. “They waited too long. They were both interested. I thought they were going to offer, but they never did.”

Why did Helms go ahead and commit on Wednesday? “I just couldn’t pass it up. They have the No. 1 undergraduate business school in the country. After football, you’ve got to have something. It’s a great degree.”

Congratulations Cory Helms, great school.

Wake Forest is all over the Atlanta metro counties with many offers. Hope to see many more of the local recruits choose a great academic school like Wake Forest. A couple of very good QB’s in GA have offers as well, look for a home state signal caller.

You don’t hear many talk about life after football. Unfortunately for many, there is no life after football, which typically doesn’t last long. Good for him. He is a bright kid making an informed smart choice. Wish he all of the successful in the world, far beyond football.

Any other year, this kid would have gotten a Tech offer in a heartbeat. Unfortunately for him, Tech has had an embarrassment of riches in terms of talent sign up at O-line this year. Just another sign CPJ is turning Tech back into a perennial contender.

This kid could play either side of the ball, seems to be smart enough that no issues with academics would arise, would like to have had an offer from UGA:

JC; that should stand for “just cram it;” the Jackets have already gotten commitments from two of the highest rated offensive line prospects in the State, and have offers out, with high interest from, a couple of others who are much higher on their board. If you were a Tech fan, you would know this, but, obviously, you’tr nothing more than a troll.

Best of luck to Cory on a great, healthy, career at Wake. JM.

I don’t think anyone at UGA gives a flip about whether you’re happy with the racial mix of their recruiting class. Try the Aryan Nation website for that type of crap, hillbilly.

Congrats to the young man. Wake Forest is a terrific school. Nice setting up there. School has less than 20,000 kids – easy to get around. I bet he loves it there…

Wish him the best folks…

Beast from the east: I dont think the UGA fan base is happy with 11 blacks starting on defense and three white on offense. See how easy it is to make a statement like you and assume you are speaking for others. I made it clear that I was speaking for me. I will also make it clear I dont care what the other schools do. The idea that UGA football cannot recruit more white athletes is silly.

Ever stop to think they don’t even consider someone’s race when they are evaluating their level of play and their academic ability? Nah, racists don’t think using reason and logic. I’m done debating a fool.

Georgia didnt recruit this kid too hard because he’s not that great..Good enough to get in school and I wish him well. But not SEC material. The question is so stupid I wont bother to address it.But you obviously must be a disapointed relative or friend.

Most people under the age of 12 no longer associate the word, color, with the word, human being. Thank God for 12 year olds.

P.S. EA Sports, on NCAA 13, rates Florida’s defense a 93 and Georiga’s a 91. Interesting. Of course, Georgia’s offense is rated a 95 and Florida’s an 84. But again……ratings have nothing to do with coaching, heart, motivation, desire, fan base, stadium noise, injuries, etc.

I am black and I agree with game changer. UGA needs to recruit more white athletes in football and basketball, and so does every other SEC school except maybe Vanderbilt. When I look at the NFL and the NBA, I see plenty of white athletes, and not just on OL and DL, but at LB, WR, TE, and I am even noticing an uptick in white RBs. If they’re good enough for the NFL and NBA, they’re good enough for the SEC.

It is not like UGA has anything to lose. They’ve won 2 SEC titles – and 2 Sugar Bowls over a 9-5 FSU team playing its WR at QB and a total fraud Hawai’i bunch that had no business being in a BCS bowl – since Herschel Walker. You guys pretend as if recruiting some white LBs, DBs, WRs, RBs etc. would somehow make Georgia WORSE. Worse than who? Kentucky? (Don’t say South Carolina … the Gamecocks have won 3 of the last 4, and are likely to make it 4 out of 5 now that they finally have an OL and depth.)

If white guys are what it takes to get UGA past Alabama and LSU (and not to mention Florida, Tennessee and Auburn when they are good) and out of the Capital One and Outback Bowls and into the BCS, then I say go recruit those guys that Penn State, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio State and USC seem to put into the NFL each year.

And oh yeah. Offer this kid a scholarship too. UGA recruits 4 and 5 star OL recruits year after year and their OLs always stink. Maybe going after a 3 star every now and then will actually give UGA the one or two players that can actually play to make a difference. Put it this way: those recent Alabama, LSU, Florida and (yes) Auburn national title and undefeated teams had a bunch of 3 star guys that Saban, Meyer, Miles, Chizik, Tuberville etc. were wise not to turn their noses at. Even if this kid is just a rotation guy off the bench … like UGA couldn’t have used a guy like that last year and the year before. And since UGA runs a 3-4 defense, this is a guy who could probably play RDE in your scheme, and do a better job than the 250 lb. 4-3 DEs that UGA is still recruiting for reasons that make absolutely no sense, or the 320 lb. guys who don’t academically qualify.

More white players for UGA football and basketball: an excellent idea. (I want more black students at UGA also, but looks like we will have to wait on school choice to be widely available in this state for that to happen. Of course, the biggest opponents to real school choice in this state live in the SUBURBS. Oh gee. Wonder why.)
