Todd Gurley: 4-star RB ready to make impact at UGA this year?

Did you ever see the new video on Todd Gurley?

He’s the 4-star running back from Tarboro, N.C., who signed with UGA over Clemson, among others. He’s buddies with Keith Marshall, another elite tailback from North Carolina who also signed with UGA this past year.

Marshall enrolled early at UGA, while Gurley will report this summer.

Marshall or Gurley, or both, are expected to push incumbent Isaiah Crowell for playing time this fall.

Which one – Gurley or Marshall – do you think will have the quickest impact at UGA?

Some people think Gurley is  more “college ready” at this point, while other  speculate that Marshall might have  the edge because he had the benefit  to go through the spring (although he was injured some) with UGA.

Regardless, UGA fans seem to excited about both new additions.

Mredddawg, Gurley too slow, you should do some research, before sticking your foot in your mouth.
Todd Gurley Won state title in 200 meter hurdles and ran a 4.30 40 time recently. His personal bests are 100 Meter Dash in 10.70, 110 Meter Hurdles in 14.13, 200 Meter Dash in 22.85, and 300 Meter Hurdles in 40.89.

Game changer = A Father = A Tech fan. He never has one single good thing to say about the school he supposedly loves. Everytime someone is critical of Tech, Game Changer is one of the first to make a comeback supporting Tech. It’s ok to be a Tech fan, but pathetic to be a pretend fan of any school just to try and stir the pot. Every recruit from Brice Ramsey to now Shaq Wiggins is waffling according to Game Changer. No one knows exactly what will happen NSD 2013, but I gurantee you Game Changer doesn’t know something that no one else in the recruting world knows.

@ Ghost – good point about Gurley. Gurley may well turn out to be as big as Samuel, but right now he is much faster than Samuel and that is not a put down on Samuel who has been a DGD.

Todd Gurley is clearly the best athelete on the field…yet I am bothered by the highlight film. What is the level of defensive competition/coaching? On most runs, the defensive linemen are already standing at the snap or they stand up at the snap. All 11 defenders are generally lined up within 8 yards of the line of scrimmage. There is no blocking (didn’t see one) and absolutely no tackling. That is the worst football (technique wise) I’ve seen. Is that just indicative of NC high school football. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad to have Todd…but he is about to see a diferent level of competition for sure!

Bruce Ramsey is not waffling, he is being “”used”" by Mark Rciht and staff to help recruit the 2013 class for UGA. Brice Ramsey does not fit the UGA type QB at this time and that is the issue, Brice fits the offensive schemes of Alabama, LSU, Florida beginning this year, South Carolina, Texas A&M, Ole Miss

Shaq Wiggins is waffling as of May 31, 2012 — no apology necessary

No different than UGA in the last two days putting out news that U Lemay probably want be able to qualify even if he commits today, now why would UGA offer the brother of a current football team member, and then just a day or two before the young man announces the school, UGA is making negative statements out of Butts Mehre?

Pass-Happy Offense we have, yeah, we’re excited to have 3 running backs of the caliber of these 3 – anyone of which would be the Starter at every school in the nation. Will Favorite Isaiah Crowell remain Mark Richt and Mike Bobo’s Favorite ? If he plays the other 2, no.

# 49 Rushing Offense for SEC East Champions UGA Bulldogs

Although we finished the season actually the # 5 team in The SEC, Isaiah Crowell finished the season only the

# 71 Running Back nationally, Isaiah Crowell

49 rushing yards per game # 1 (alternate # 1) Isaiah Crowell put up against the 4 teams who achieved any top 25 poll ranking for 2011.

49 per game in the 4 Losses, is not university of ground attack numbers

Largely a no-show would be a far more accurate assessment of his numbers in the 4 losses.

Given a bye for multiple transgressions off the field and even more transgressions on the field, Isaiah Crowell is the # 1 running back going into 2012, this season of 1 opponent all season who achieved any top 25 poll.

Keith Marshall and Malcolm Mitchell should have been the Stars on Offense 2012, based upon this.

HAMSTRINGS sidelined both for Spring Practice.

That happens again in the Fall, and you have a recipe for

Or, Aaron Murray to throw the football

403 pass attempts 2012 as he did 2011, completing only 238 of them, despite playing 10 teams in a row not a 1 of whom achieved any top 25 poll.

# 72 nationally in Pass Completion Percentage

Obviously, we fully expect as a Fan Base, that UGA would

Clearly, losing as many as 12 on Defense who would have Started for us here, after this up-coming 2012 season, the eyes of the Bulldogs’ Faithful will be on the FAILED OFFENSE

# 72 Pass Completion Percentage QB nationally
# 71 Running Back nationally

And, 2012 of course now we face having LOST 4 Senior OL Starters, 3 of whom are now in the NFL.

There is the confusion about Special Teams

# 80 Special Teams nationally 2011 UGA.

Or, else, there would be all eyes on what the offense can do 2012.

So, yeah, we are excited about having 3 running backs, the likes of which no team in the nation can match. (What Mike Bobo calls in this pass-happy offense, is that he likes to throw the football 403 times with Aaron Murray not hitting the broad side of the barn.)

The questions surrounding Todd Grantham being at UGA after 2012 season is going to hurt UGA as we move forward with the 2013 class of recruits. Blame McGarity and the lack of leadership in Butts Mehre

Gurley will be like we had hoped Samuel would be and Malcome, could be. He is a tough yard gainer, and gains a fair amount of yard after the first contact. He is better though, simply because he has the little extra burst of speed and makes his cuts faster. Before the year is out, I see him getting a fair amount of carries along side Crowell and Mitchell. Crowell is faster and makes people miss by faking them out a lot, and once he gets some open space, he is gone. Marshall’s strong suit is his ability to read the line and anticipate the hole. Because of his speed, he is through it so quickly and once he is past the initial line surge, he has the ability to outrun the second line of defense. Gurley, finds the hole and gets through fast, and his ability is more in the fact that he takes a hit and keeps on ticking.
These three guys present UGA with an interesting but healthy dilemma, as all three are going to be great in their own right, but all three will be vying for time on the field.

“Crowell is faster and makes people miss by faking them out a lot, and once he gets some open space, he is gone.”

Uh, no sir. Isaiah Crowell is only 4.43 in the 40-yard dash, URL Link provided, while Keith Marshall is significantly faster at 4.29. Night and Day FASTER than Isaiah Crowell. Isaiah Crowell’s gone ? His longest run was only 29 yards, hardly as described “he is gone.”

You seem to be providing a largely biased view of Isaiah Crowell, sir.

“He is gone.”
Carlton Thomas had a higher per rush average than Isaiah Crowell.

Carlton Thomas would be what then, with regard to “He is gone.” ?

14.7 yards per carry Brandon Boykin
12.0 yards per carry Alexander Ogletree
9.5 yards per carry Malcolm Mitchell
7.7 yards per carry Branden Smith
4.9 yards per carry Carlton Thomas
4.8 yards per carry Kyle Karempelis
4.7 yards per carry Brandon Harton
4.6 yards per carry Isaiah Crowell
“He is gone.” Uh, no. He is least gone by stark direct contrast to your statement, sir. Again, from you.

He obviously has great vision and cut back ability. I didn’t see tons of contact and running through tackles, although he was running in a lot of traffic. That could be due to good vision and decision making with the ball, or it could be the level of competition. Hopefully some of that talent will translate over to UGA. Who knows how quickly he will play. So much of that has to do with coachability, leadership, work ethic, and what the coaches see when they get them on the practice field, so everybody don’t get the cart before the horse.

GTBob – I had a friend who graduated from GIT business school (ranked lower than ours but that’s besides the point). He said that he had classes with many of the GIT football players and that he fairmindedly saw no difference between the the types of intellectual abilities of them and the types of players Georgia has. He said some of his classmates could hardly write a legible sentence and received heavy tutoring, same as every other major football college. That sounds pretty accurate to me. Debating the intellectual abilities of football players makes you sound silly. While some football players AT MOST COLLEGES will be smart, the majority AT MOST COLLEGES couldn’t even get in to their school without football. Generalizing GIT academic prowess for your football players makes you sound ignorant.

Thomas Brown, I like your enthusiasm for the running game. I just hope Coach Friend can coach up the offensive line, and they can block well enough for us to run the ball more effectively this year. I’m personally taking a “wait and see” approach because we’ve got several new guys on the o-line. I want to run it more too, but I think we may be forced into throwing it more if the offensive line can’t get a decent push.

How good is UNC running back Geo Bernard? NC backs Marshall and Gurley chose Uga, while Fl back Bernard chose UNC. How does Bernard match up against the two? I know their sizes, I am just interested in their potential comparative effectiveness.. Anybody have an opinion?

Ravon, I have one . We saw that Bernard was 1st team AA frosh team with almost 1300 ids rushing. So Both Marshall and Gurley will have a big challenge in matching Bernard. Also, UNC has a RS frosh back who was recruited by many SEC schools (Romar Morris), who scored 3TDs in Spring game. He is faster than Marshall.

I kind of actually agree with GTBob on this one. I do think Gurley will redshirt because we have Boo. Samuel has actually moved to the FB position which adds atleast some kind of new dimension to our offense due to the fact that Samuel still remains one of the fastest players on the team. The redshirt may be lifted if Boo can’t get it together, but it looked as though he may have been turning the corner during the G-Day game. Pass protection is an important thing for the young rb’s to learn, and if our O-line is anything like last year please learn it quick. Steve- please put away the thesaurus, this is a football blog not english class….

Being a Tide and Dawg fan I’m torn about where I want prize recruits to go. Ga/Richt is a great choice and Richt has enviable character. Ala/Saban is a great choice because Ala. has the credentials and history of playing in the big games. If you want to compete with the best, against the best, go to Ala. Ga. has been there and is on the way back to that level. Tough choice for any recruit.
AS far as Ala. not sending great quarerbacks to the NFL, Joe Namath, and Bart Starr come to mind. Ala. didn’t hire Saban to stock the NFL with talent. They hired him to build a national powerhouse that competes for national championships. Saban and Richt are two great coaches, but someone has to be the best. At this point in their careers Saban is the man. By the time Richt reaches Saban’s level of experience, he will be the man. As previously mentioned, it’s a tough choice for any recruit. It boils down to whether you want to join a champion now and compete against the other “Best” recruits at your position or join a team that is going to get to that level in the near future. If you beat out the best, you are the best. It’s a matter of an older guy competing with a young guy for the affection of a beautiful lady… do you want “Fumble or Finesse?” I love both teams!
