One of Maryland’s top college prospects committed to Georgia Tech on Wednesday.
Darius Commissiong, a 6-foot-2, 295-pound defensive tackle from Forestville, Md., picked Georgia Tech over North Carolina and Maryland, among his 20 offers.
Commissiong, a 3-star who is ranked as the nation’s No. 38 defensive tackle by 247sports.com, was convinced after meeting with Georgia Tech defensive coordinator Al Groh last week and talking to him again over the telephone on Wednesday.
“He told me everything I need to hear to make me want to go there – it’s a good school academically and I fit in well with the defensive scheme there,” Commissiong told the AJC.
“I also talked with Coach [Paul Johnson]. You could tell he was really excited and somewhat surprised when I committed. It was his tone of voice. He had a lot of pep in it. He kind of shouted when I told him the news.”
Commissiong has a 3.0 and will likely study Business or Finance.
He is commitment No. 4 for Georgia Tech’s 2013 recruiting class – and the first on defense. The Yellow Jackets are expected to sign around 14-15 recruits in February.

Good pickup for the Jackets. They need an anchor there in the middle if they’re going to stay with Groh and the 3-4. Helped UGA a lot when they got the size there in the middle.

Hope this is a sign of things to come. GT just landed the top DT on their list and the top olineman on their list. We also have an offer out to his fellow lineman. GT is also still in good standing to get Faycson, Mustaffa, Hall, and now Robbins.

The funny thing is his commit came after the UGa OL commit. The blog author moved this story to the lead momentarily but is such a UGa homer, he moved it back behind the Tech commit story. This paper is such a joke. No wonder it’s moving to Florida and Ohio.

Kudos to Tech. I think that the front 7 for Tech the past few season’s has been a dismal failure. It starts in the middle. Hopefully this is the guy that will plug that hole up the middle for you guys. Best of luck to you Mr Commissiong.

Very nice!
Tech has been very unlucky with a few of their 4 star DL recruits over the past few years. Injuries/illness/etc… Keep plugging away and they’ll pan out sooner or later.

Nice commitment for the Jackets. Good size, agility, and based on video has a nasty attitude on the field. Like all young linemen he will need to be in the weight room and time to physically mature but he has the look of a very solid player. This signing class, while small in numbers, is shaping up very well.

Thanks AJC for being fair and changing the order of the “recent posts” to be based on chronological order (as the word “recent” would imply but not guarantee”) instead of which school’s fans are going to give you the most hits. That was big of you.

Good post wes… that’s absolutely right. Its not that GT hasn’t recruited some highly regarded DEs and NTs… we’ve just had an unfortunate combination of near misses, injuries, and underperformance. GT doesn’t pull the number of highly rated prospects at any given position that top tier schools pull, so any combination of recruiting misses (Tomlinson and Tuitt), injuries (Green and McCoy), and underperformance (Williams and Lanier) impacts depth more severely.

He fits in well because Georgia tek has no defense, so he can come right in and start. Georgia tek’s recruiting class is ranked # 39 and the entire ACC does not have a single school ranked in the top 14.
http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=9&c=14&yr=2013
Considering the ACC never has a team rank that high when the season is over at # 14, this is consistent that you do not get the talent that the SEC schools do.
The most amusing post of the day today was on the blog about UGA’s top football commitment Derrick Henry where a Georgia tek fan actually posted how poorly UGA is doing compared to Alabama who is seeking Derrick Henry’s services, as well a 5-Star 260 lbs running back with 4.5 speed.
Excuse me Georgia tek, but you have beat our current coach 1 time out of 11 games, while you have remained on NCAA PROBATION IN FOOTBALL back-to-back, repeat offenders including 2012, and so you BRAG about how the current national champions 2 of the current 3 years is doing better than us with your 1-11 record against us ?
Truly. You cannot make this stuff up. And, to think you call yourself smart and run around bragging you are # 36 national university – like that is # 1 Harvard.

@ Thomas Brown……# 36 is a helluva lot higher than # 62, which is where UGAG is ranked. And Tech is not even a university by the strict definition of the word. So what does that tell you about UGAG? Tech, incidentally is the 3rd highest ranked engineering college, behind MIT and Cal Tech.
You are a bit full of yourself, aren’t you, bubba. Hell, even Florida is ranked higher than UGAG.

I see Phil Steele, most accurate pre-season predictor 15 years in a row and who has the best pre-season magazine all 15 consecutive seasons as well with the most readership as a direct result thereof, has listed his 1st team players pre-season for The SEC on Offense, Defense and Special Teams. Obviously, with # 80 special teams nationally, UGA has none listed. Obviously, on Defense with 12 who are candidates for the NFL after this 2012 season, UGA has 3 listed including one Heisman Trophy candidate in our best all-time linebacker every Jarvis Jones, thanks to the stupidity of Lame Kitten only and a 1st Round NFL Draft Pick 2012, who gave up his millions to prove again that his sprained neck of many seasons’ ago is NOT an issue.
But, the real news is on Offense. UGA, the # 52 Total Offense all 11 years of Mark Richt, stripped our certain 1st Team Wide Receiver Malcolm Mitchell who led the team in reception yards per game as a Freshman 2011 with hands like Fred Biletnikoff and speed bursts at the end of his routes unseen in recent history, and finds UGA without a single 1st Team Offensive Player – according to Phil Steele. I watched Fred play in our Falcons’ Seasons’ tickets every season, too. Malcolm Mitchell missed games last season, and wasn’t even made a Starter 5 of the games total of the 14, starting only 9 games and his missed games were a direct result of Strength and Conditioning with Hamstring Issues. I see we fixed that, by moving him exclusively only to defensive back since Mark Richt has 11 defensive backs he signed to play against Mizzou who are just gone from the team totally, no longer even on our roster, and the entire Secondary SUSPENDED.
Chris Conley could help, but alas, he too, is unable to even practice, like Malcolm Mitchell. While on the topic, our top RB recruit Keith Marshall – also has Strength and Conditioning ISSUES with a HAMSTRING keeping him out of practice, when obviously, it is the running game we were missing in EVERY LOSS.
Pre-season # 6 UGA, because everyone looks at our schedule of no home game worth driving to Athens to watch and 1 opponent all season who achieved any top 25, has not 1 player on Phil Steele’s 1st Team SEC Pre-Season.
NOW, THAT IS NEWS.
