Derrick Henry: Will Alabama flip UGA’s top recruit?

UGA’s top football recruit is being courted by Alabama.

And he’s listening.

The marquee recruit is Derrick Henry, the 5-star running back from Yulee, Fla., who committed to UGA last summer. He is ranked as one of the top three players out of Florida.

Alabama dispatched assistant Burton Burns to Henry’s high school on Monday. It went so well that Henry sent a tweet out later that day that ignited a frenzy in the Bulldog nation:

Had a good time with Coach Burns today from Alabama. Really liked him . Excited to get over there June 8th #Tide

If that didn’t cause widespread panic among UGA fans, Henry had this to say the next day to Scout.com’s Andrew Bone (click here to read full article):

“I started talking to my coach. We had a serious talk. We talked about the positives of Alabama. We feel like Alabama is the place to go … I am not saying my coaches are swaying me to go to Alabama. They are not doing that at all. We are just laying out everything. The fact Alabama has coach [Nick Saban] and all the things they bring to the table really sticks out to me.”

And what about that UGA commitment? Is it safe? Henry told Scout “It’s not that solid as it was. I am really open …”

Sounds like some of the gleam from those BCS crystal trophies my have struck Derrick Henry right in the old eye ball. If Burton Burns has been “dispatched” you may find yourselves and the plantation with a serious battle on your hands.

Awful early to panic, try to show a little pride in your program’s recruiters instead of throwing in the towel here in May?

Not all that worried about Derrick Henry. Situation seems too much like Richard Samuel…a kid that should play linebacker, but wants to be a running back. On top of that, we are stacked at running back right now, and have one of the top running backs in GA committed for 2014…would hate to lose DH because he is a great prospect, but I would rather lose him that TM or BR.

Henry needs to wait to do anything now that he has already committed to Georgia. He can always de-commit. Saban will make sure there is a scholarship ready for him anytime he wants it. Just because Alabama won a national title in 2011 doesn’t mean that they won’t lose 3 or 4 games in 2012 and Georgia won’t go undefeated. A move right now would just look immature and really dumb. All recruits need to know Saban and Smart will say any lie they can come up with to make the recruit doubt their decision to go to Georgia. Henry need to realize that Saban is an expert salesman and that a sixteen or seventeen year old doesn’t stand a chance.
What Richt , Bobo and McClendon need to do is make sure that Henry realizes that Georgia has at least 15 more players in the NFL than does Alabama right now and Henry won’t get anything at Alabama that he can’t get at Georgia and that there was a reason he committed to Georgia in the first place.
Just wait until around November to make any moves , by then he can see how everybody is doing. Then if he won’t to de-commit most of us at Georgia don’t care where he go’s if it isn’t with the Dawgs.

DH is a better prospect Linebacker…. I don’t to much care for him at running back at bama or uga. DH folds when he faces a stiff defense….Buford had him running side ways all night long, don’t see him running against sec defenses

Nobody knows what the kid is going to do, so nobody should be bad mouthing him, or trying to put words into his mouth. I think he is easily dazzled by coaches, events and what he thinks are expectations but remember he is just a teenager with a lot of dreams and expectations right now. He will have to live with decision and it is his to make. If he sees Alabama as a more sure route to the NFL, good luck to him. If he decides to play for UGA, same thing. He doesn’t have any real loyalty for Georgia since he is from Florida. Either team would be OK for the foreseeable future if he is not in their fold. UGA has three top ten backs and the oldest one is just a sophomore this year, so UGA can and will survive quite nicely, whether ore not he is in the fold. Alabama has two RB’s committed already for the year, so who knows where he ends up playing this year. UGA wanted him as RB and supposedly Alabama does also.
It is a wait and see type situation as far as he goes, and if UGA gets him signed, good for UGA. If not, they will be just fine for the next couple of years and with the bumper crop of players at the position of RB available still out there and the next year, depth is the only thing remotely affected if Henry changes his mind. I personally think he doesn’t see himself starting in 2013 at UGA, so he wants to make sure he can start someplace, so he doesn’t waste what he sees is 3 years in college and then onto Sundays. Good luck wherever he lands.

[...] If that didn’t cause widespread panic among UGA fans, Henry had this to say the next day to Scout.com’s Andrew Bone: “I started talking to my coach. We had a serious talk. We talked about the positives of Alabama. We feel like Alabama is the place to go … I am not saying my coaches are swaying me to go to Alabama. They are not doing that at all. @7576Dawg

Don’t look now but TennesseeDawg contradicted you at 7:24 (on the number of players from each school on an NFL roster ) Admittedly having to play with rosters so depleted that by the 2008 draft Bama had zero players picked (first time that happened in decades ) gave UGA a brief chance to temporarily skew the numbers . No matter … you will both be wrong in 1 or 2 more drafts and the recruits already know it :-)

Last 3 seasons:
Alabama has (11 )1st Round NFL draft Picks

Alabama has (2) BCS National Championships

What does UGA have in the last 3 years that remotely compares to that?

Another angle ? Nah . I had already pointed out previously (before the LATEST draft ) that little statistical anomaly was melting faster than a snowflake in h*ll . The numbers are now moving so far so fast that even you and 7576 Dawg can’t agree if how narrow the “lead” currently is . Like I said … another draft or so … you’ll both be wrong…. and recruits already know it . ;-)

I am a Dawg fan and I don’t blame the kid at all. Too many backs ahead of him at UGA. He probably would not touch the field until he’s a senior. Contrary to popular belief, most elite athletes do not go to college primarily to get a degree because if they did they would stay until they graduate, regardless of what their draft status is.

Nick will give the kid a chance at the big back position for situations at Bama but he will not be our 1st and 2nd down back. Best position might be LB but since Shula left town I gave up recruiting and coaching. I just hope Bama can retain Jones and Tennpenney as our two feature backs in this class since both are outstanding. The R Foster situation is fluid with UGA,AU,and Bama with a chance. Robert N is coming to Bama.(if he has the grades to qualify). It’s very quiet as far as Brice and Bama as of today. It’s very possible the interest in Brice hastened the commit of Bateman but the transfer of Phil Sims did more since the QB position is short numbers at Bama. Kamara(sp) just might fall into the UGA camp even though Bama is recruiting him more as a slot receiver all purpose type player. He is a good one for sure. JMO but I had rather these good players go to UGA than down to thug U at auburn. The sheet those people pull off hurts every school in the SEC that recruits players they have on their list.

To those of you on here saying Henry should be a LB, I could not agree more. At his size now and potential to get bigger, with his speed and range, he would be a beast at MLB. He will get a shot at RB at BAMA if he were to flip but I think eventually he will be moved to LB. Not sure if that would be the case at UGA. At the same time, with Foster coming in, he is our future at MLB so I would be interested to see what spot Henry got moved to.

He’s a kid. Kid’s are allowed to change their minds. I’m just hoping his parents and coaches are helping him pick the right school to will be HIS best fit. Would hate to lose him, but if he comes to Georgia and is unhappy, then he’d be a problem (e.g., King) and we don’t need that anymore.

Still think that coaches should not be allowed to offer to kids until after their junior year is completed.

If the Dawg fans could even momentarily get over their Saban hysteria they might eventually realize Kamara , Foster and Matthews to AU would be a hell of a worse nightmare for them than any group of players headed to Bama . UGA plays the Tide on a long cycle rotation . UGA plays the Barn every year .

What say you Dawg fans ? Would you rather see those three at the Barn or suited up in Crimson ? I have no problem saying I’d rather see them in Athens . If they all chose the Barn they would have to be Processed by the Tide throughout their entire college career . I wouldn’t wish that on them :-)

Would have loved to see this big guy running downhill in Athens. But some reason our program is stuck on flashy rb’s with breakaway speed. But if he goes to Bama, he’ll be sitting behind alotta other great backs they recruited. Wouldnt expect much playing time till his junior year. Bama loves these types of big backs, and have been successful with them, so its obvious he would look at their program. Better watchout what you look for though. But until we can become a more consistent team, and win the big games…this stuff will continue!! Regardless…i’ll still support the Dawgnation!!
