Is Alabama’s serious flirtation with UGA QB recruit Brice Ramsey over?

Alabama got some good recruiting news on Wednesday.

And it’s likely good news for UGA, too.

Alabama’s serious flirtations with UGA’s prized QB recruit, Brice Ramsey – highlighted by last week’s 90-minute Skye conversation between Nick Saban and Ramsey – are likely over after the Crimson Tide landed one of the nation’s top quarterbacks on Wednesday.

Good news for Alabama on Wednesday likely means good news for UGA's Mark Richt. After Alabama landed another QB, it's serious flirtations with Brice Ramsey are likely over (Photo taken and owned by Ramsey family. Photo was not owned, submitted, authorized or arranged by UGA)

Utah QB Cooper Bateman, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 61 overall prospect by ESPN, committed to Alabama on Wednesday. Ramsey is ranked at No. 110.

It is very rare for two high-profile QB prospects in the same class to attend the same college.

“Maybe that will be the case,” Camden County High School coach Jeff Herron told the AJC on Wednesday afternoon. “One thing I’ve found out about quarterbacks, they all  know what’s going on with all the schools, in terms of who is there now and who is being recruited. It’s not like a linebacker, lineman or running back.

“The quarterbacks are all highly aware of what else is going on. That certainly might affect his decision. I don’t know. Brice’s decision, as far as I know and I’m concerned, is to sign with the University of Georgia. So hopefully with the other kid committing to Alabama, that’s good for Alabama and good for Georgia.”

Last week, Rivals.com’s Keith Niebuhr reported that Alabama was the only threat to UGA, quoting Ramsey as saying, “If it’s not Georgia, it’ll be Alabama.” It sent shockwaves throughout the Bulldog nation.

What about now? Ramsey’s coach hadn’t talked to anybody yet at Alabama to find out how they still feel about Ramsey after picking up another QB. However, Herron was fully aware how strongly the Crimson Tide felt about Ramsey before Wednesday’s turn of events.

“The offensive coordinator from Alabama told me Brice was one of their priorities, and they were going to recruit him like crazy and try to get him to come over there and look around,” Herron said. “I think certainly Brice is very much committed to Georgia. But, you know, any kid is going to be intrigued by the national champions and them showing a great amount of interest in you.

“I think he is intrigued enough he wanted to go look. But do I think he’s going to change his mind? From a personal standpoint, I hope not because he’s committed to Georgia and I expect him to honor that decision. But again, that’s Brice’s decision. I can’t say if they were both recruiting me that I wouldn’t entertain both of them.

“Brice is in a different situation than most kids because the colleges are willing to wait on him until signing day.”

UGA fans are hoping that with Alabama’s good fortunes on Wednesday, it will secure the services of Ramsey, who committed to the Bulldogs last summer. Ramsey has remained a hot commodity in recent months, picking up additional scholarship offers from competing schools.

“It’s different with quarterbacks; I’ve certainly discovered that,” Herron said. “They all look at everything.  Honestly, I think Brice could tell you the depth chart on every team in the SEC and ACC. In the old days, you couldn’t look that stuff up. We’ve talked about that and I said, ‘Brice, there’s going to be great quarterbacks anywhere you go to school. You’ve got to believe enough in yourself that you can compete with anybody.’  And he feels way. But then again, they all look at it like ‘I don’t want to go to a place where I have to compete again five other quarterbacks. I want to go where I compete against one or two.’”

I don’t think Anthony Jennings will have a problem getting a Div 1 scholarship . I am not sure why you think he wouldn’t . I still hope the Tide stays serious on the young man if he has any interest in return .

Chris Mike, show us the membership card that makes this a private UGA club. Otherwise, read the headline again. This story is as much about UA as it is UGA.

Ramsey is a Dawg and Saban & Bama knows that. He wants to compete at a high level for the QB job at UGA. The compition at UGA is real high with or without Murray. Ramsey wants to play on sunday and if he can’t win the QB job at UGA he want be playing on sunday. So, why go where there is less competion for the sake of maybe playing a little more college football. Ramsey will play a lot of football at UGA, trust me he that good. I just hope we don’t lose some of the others in the process.

A nice neutral comment . One designed to not really say anything . Let’s get you on record here . Is it “like shooting fish in a barrel” because it IS indeed a RECRUITING blog where multiple schools fans have a vested interest ? Or do you actually think that the fact that the blog is posted on the AJC site honestly is supposed to just make it a “UGA” site as well ? ;-)

Ok do Georgia fans seriously think Bama “lost” this one? cuz they didn’t. Bama wanted Bateman but clearly weren’t sure if they were going to get him so they went for back up plans. Bama got their guy in the end.

Altamaha, it’s all a crapshoot at this point. Who knows if any of these kids can play, particularly the QBs. But I like the odds with Bateman. He may be playing in Utah instead Georgia, but at least he’s throwing the ball. Thoughts?

AltamahaDawg

May 17th, 2012

Oh I think folks know if these (2) kids can play QB. Not sure there is any doubt about that.

I’ll get a chance to see Ramsey play in person this fall. What I believe is so impressing to most is that despite playing in the wing-T he is still considered one of the best QB in the nation. Imagine If he wasn’t. For sure (and all the scouts have pointed this out) his ratings would be much higher, some say as much as #1. Other I am sure disagree. None of that really matters. #6 VS #16 best qb prospect is pretty subjective.

AltamahaDawg

Or I see that Scouts has them at #4, and #6.

“obviously” #4 is so much better than #6 best QB prospect in the country playing in different regions in different type offenses. .

my point in this whole thing was not that who will end up being better just that bama in all likely hood wanted Bateman and got there guy. with ramsey being the back up plan

It is all a crapshoot, and that is why Batemen & Brice will be in Tuscaloosa next month at camp. Until an LOI is signed and honored all this verbal stuff is just hot air by all the participation involved.

Brice may have grown an inch since January that’s what happens with 17 & 18 year old’s, I grew an inch at 20 years of age.

Georgia kids know that the last three BCS crystal trophies came from the state across the Chattahoochee River and we will continue to invite the best and brightest of those to Tuscaloosa, so they can punish the ones who stray from the path and choose Auburn.

UGA is not our natural competitor and to think that Florida has twice the population and has to split the recruits with 4-5 in house schools every year! UGA still gets the pick of the litter for its needs and couldn’t take all if it wanted too (why you left 19 off the table last year is questionable, but it looks like CMR has changed his ways now).

In the future UGA announced it plans on loading up the cart like everybody else does in the sane world and for ‘Dawg fans that must be exciting and a relief.

Ohio State. Alabama, & Florida are all in the hunt for a QB of Ramsey/ Bateman quality. The kid is a top player on one of the states best HS football programs a lot of teams will be gunning for his talent.

Good luck Brice next month and enjoy your camp in Title Town!

@altamaha dawg:

I hope the ratings that are based on 99% upside growth are accurate regarding Brice Ramsey. Ramsey has not established himself as a top five 2013 QB in the state of GA at currently ability or level of play. There is/are QB’s not even listed on the 2013 high school watch list that have equal size, arm strength is better, better accuracy, play in passing shotgun and spread offenses since day one and proven to better teams equal or better week in and week out, unlike this Ramsey. I agree we have no idea which ones will stand out but as far as ability and background on paper, Ramsey is not in TOP 5 OF GA FOR 2013 CLASS.

Game Changer

Ramsey has the size, problem is ZERO EXPERIENCE AND NO COMPETITION EVER PLAYED AGAINST. Never made the difference in a game. Ramsey’s parents have done a total disservice to him by having him stay and play at Camden.

Brown Dog was telling you it was a crap shoot because NO ONE knows if either kid can play QB … AT THE COLLEGE LEVEL . Of course people can look at and tell you … what they have already done in high school . There is a step up to doing that in college and it is NOT the same step up that players at other positions face . Guessing how well a young man might perform as a college QB based off what you see him doing in high school is simply harder to do than it might be for say … a running back . Every position of course has some level of transition but some translate closer on a 1 for 1 basis than others …. ( or 1 to 2 … whatever :-) )

and when your max passes in any high school game is 8, you never had to pass down field for the win, you never beat a team equal or better than your team and any QB on the team could have won the same games you have, ( Then the college that offers you a scholarship passes more than 30 times a game, your chance at failure is huge not to mention a minimum of two years just to learn how to play QB in that type offense ) More QB will be signed that have more experience and better ability than Brice Ramsey but who cares right, welcome to Athens, GA where the ruin of many men occurs. Comments about Cooper Bateman:

“What people don’t understand about him is he’s a sub-4.5 guy. Legitimately sub-4.5. This kid can fly and he can just flat hammer the ball. He can throw it as good and hard as anybody.

“We were down by 6 in a 30-degree game with four seconds to go. He threw it 67 yards on a rope and hit our guy in stride. The DB started backpeddling because he didn’t think he could throw it that far.

“We run a college-style offense, he’s got to make a lot of calls at the line of scrimmage, he’s got to do a lot of things with the football as far as changing plays at the line and all that kind of stuff. We kind of prepped him to play college football. He’s 6-foot-3, runs a sub-4.5 40 and has a cannon for an arm and, oh by the way, has a 3.8 grade point average.”

And now you have publicy stated that I SIS my child a disservice by not moving him???? I think I’ve taught him integrity football is a team sport and he has played with all these boys since rec league to move him would have been a disservice to him in teaching him that just because he doesn’t like the offense he should leave!!!! For all fans. Saban wanted Brice Ramsey also. He is probably recruiting 3-4 Quarterbacks. He realistically would not get all 4. That is why it is good for some of these kids to go ahead and fill their slot before someone else gets it. If Bateman would have signed somewhere else, then SABAN would have 3 left to recruit.

Brice Ramsey is talented make no mistake about it. Only time will tell who will end up the better college or pro QB.

@mama

How come your boy threw only 8 passes in the only big game he has ever played and lost at that?

How come when he was in 10th grade you knew the offense was not to his needs so you left him at Camden?

Do you control everything about your son or is he allowed to make his own decisions?

After your son did not win at the Buford workouts, did you cry?

I am here to tell you that I hope your son Brice Ramsey improves and wins every game at UGA when he is afforded the opportunity to start. For sure he could never be worse than the current Aaron Murray. The very fact that you “mama” run your mouth so publicly is very embarrasing to your son and if it isn’t, than I wish he had flipped and signed with Alabama.

If you see a post by me that mis-states the facts then post what is correct?

Mama, you proved one thing, your guilt of leaving your son at Camden may have cost him a chance to play much earlier at the college level, for that you should apologize ever night to Brice!
