Marqui Hawkins: Florida picks up commitment from Isaiah Crowell’s HS teammate

Florida-bound WR Marqui Hawkins (AJC)

Florida-bound WR Marqui Hawkins (AJC)

One of the state’s top wide receivers committed to Florida on Monday.

Marqui Hawkins, a  6-foot-2, 190-pounder from Carver-Columbus High School, picked Florida over Clemson among 15 offers, which also included Tennessee, Southern Cal, and North Carolina.

“We spoke earlier in the week about Florida, and Marqui went on to tell his mother about it,” Carver coach Dell McGee told the AJC. “He called Coach [Will] Muschamp and told him the good news. Coach Muschamp called me after he committed. Both parties are happy.”

Hawkins attends Carver, the alma mater of UGA tailback Isaiah Crowell. Hawkins did not have a UGA scholarship offer but was being evaluated by the Bulldogs. At Florida, Hawkins projects to play offense and maybe some defense.

“He’s a great kid, first of all …  great attitude and great character,” McGee said. “He’s got a real physical demeanor about himself on the football field. He can do a variety of things. Florida can play him at wide receiver. But defense is also a possibility, at safety or cornerback. He’s just a great athlete.”

Richt/Booboo can’t wait for the best QB in America, Marietta’s ANTHONY JENNINGS to commit to BAMA. It will take ‘em off the hook you see. I can hear ‘em now. “WE WERE STILL EVALUATING JENNINGS. AND WE”RE PRETTY DEEP AT TIGHT END. SOOO, GOOD LUCK TO THE YOUNG MAN.” Ya’ll’s is the most laughed at program in history. 31 years and counting. NO WONDER.

Georgia didn’t offer the kid because they are not impressed with the kid as a receiver. I saw the kid play and his best position will be at safety. Heck of a hitter with decent speed, but like I said an average receiver Would have loved for Georgia to offer the kid anyway. He has a pretty good upside and if he didn’t work out at wr they could move him to defense. I seem to recall several months back that the kid didn’t have Georgia that high on his wish list anyway.

Why should it matter humpers

I hate to be this person but his brother is one of the young men that was arrested for the theft incident at junior day last year so that is what caused to slow eval on him. I am not saying that he is a bad person or a potential locker room issue but some situations have to be taken into consideration.

humpers can't count, why?

Crowell “stayed” hurt most of the time? I guess if someone doesn’t realize their full potential as a true freshman we can just write them off…. looking forward to your eating those words come September

Wrong Mountain Dawg. UGA definitely needs WR and have scholarship offers out to at least 7 WR that rated 4 star. They have Trammel Terry (4 star) who is a commit but he may play DB. They want at least 2 WR in this class as they only got 1 WR last year.

ted

Wrong. UGA needs more receivers, and will probably take at least 2 more in this class.

Congrats to Mr. Hawkins on getting a scholarship to play football in the SEC and most importantly the oppurtunity to get a college degree from a major college. I hope you do well. Except against UGA.

@bitter at 10:01 p.m…..

Acutally McGee did NOT say that anything like that about Crowell. He said Crowell had some growing up and maturing to do and in no way was as complimentary about his attitude or character, etc. Crowell could run and is a born running back and that is why EVERY team in the nation wanted him BAD. So how about you knowing what you are talking about instead of discrediting yourself and everything you said. It seems like you have some maturity issues too. Will viagra help that? Probably do the opposite actually.

UGA cant sign every good player in the state and simply do NOT want some and there are things you idiots do not know about like is he good enough to be a starter at UGA at receiver or will he be a defensive back? If he was a going to be a great receiver he would have been offered but there are a few question marks. So then does he fit in to Granthams defense? Probably but would he be willing to do that and not play receiver? UGA does not offer every kid in the state like Alabama or Tennessee and then tell them they have no room. Sometimes it hurts, but it is the right thing to do. After all it is about the kids first. Someone should tell Saban that….

Another thing. Crowell will have a great season this year and you will all be saying WOW. He was hurt and he was hurt SIGNIFICANTLY but STILL played with an injury that just does not heal until months of rest. (You should inquire about that since you obviously never played and had that injury or had a teammate with one or played period). Everybody wanted him, not just UGA andwithout that TRUE freshman, UGA would not have won the East….haters.

FYI he is STILL the best back on the roster. The others have their skills but overall Crowell has cutting ability and vision they do not have. Marshall does have AWESOME speed but not the vision.

Try to CUT with the injury Crowell had and he played with all he had and you PATHETIC and POOR EXCUSES FOR FANS BOOED HIM?! Please go slap yourselves.

You know nothing of the injury he had or would have known the ONLY thing that would heal it was MONTHS of rest.

UGA will be running over, through and around the SEC defenses this year. And for the next 4 years with Harvery and others coming in the next couple years….!

2012 SEC Champion Georgia Bulldogs…sound good huh?! With the DEFENSE and RB’s and QB, we just need some decent blocking and low turnovers and it is OURS in 2012!

Suck on that Tide fans….

Good luck to the recruit and hope he does well at Florida.

As a UGA alum, I hope we put a thumbtack on carver columbus, take a string and draw a 20 mile circe around it, and call it the forbidden area to recruit. Not worth the time, energy or money.

For once I am glad the UGA football program did not waste time in this black hole of trouble.

Congrats to the kid, hope you have a successful career at UF.

but MC once again your writing “prowess” (lack thereof) shows. I will never understand how you have a job, except for the fact that the AJC as a whole is terrible. Half the crap you put up here is C&P from all over and this kid comitts to FLORIDA (i’m a dawg fan) and all you can come up with for a title is Isaiah Crowell’s teamate (not to mention it would be FORMER teamate)
If thats your title why didn’t throw in Cootie Harrows teamate, Gabe Wrights teamate, guess you could throw in Jarvis too
Your writing alone should cause people to click and read not your BUNK titles

No worries I know you’ll mod this so I’ll be back in an hour to re-post

Oh good God! English! Do you speak it. I realize education in your state isn’t so good. Have you ever been laid in life? I realize there is absolutely nothing to do in that cesspool state of Alabama, except get so involved in Alabama football, but step outside and take a breath of fresh air. If you get laid once, your happiness in life wouldn’t be dictated by college football to such a degree. You sound like a mouth breathing moron.

Besides, football is all Alabama will ever have, and you have to cheat to get that. The rest of Alabama’s athletic program is a joke, and Alabama’s academic reputation is a laughing stock.

Most kids below Newnan used to go to FSU & or Auburn, I think UGA’s ability to sneak Crowell out a few years ago was huge.

If I was an FSU fan or Auburn fan I would be very concerned with losing this recruit to Florida, UGA and Alabama are dark horses in this area.

JRw 7. To answer your question about why UGA did not pursue this young man. UGA already has two verbals for 2013, and one of those is Trammel Terry. In addition, UGA has about 5 others offered and only expects to sign at most, one more. It is a question of numbers, plain and simple.
