Mark Richt has a little secret

How large will UGA’s football recruiting class be for 2013?

Mark Richt isn’t saying — at least publicly.

“I don’t really get into talking hard numbers with everybody in the media, to be honest with you” he told the AJC recently.

How many will UGA sign in February 2013?

“I will say this: We will definitely have space to count guys back to last year’s class … there’s no doubt about that. We would love to have as many midyear enrollees as possible to maximize that number going back, along with providing space to go forward with 25, if there’s room with the 85 number [for overall scholarships].

“There’s no doubt, this year in particular, we definitely would be looking to get guys to come at the midyear [in January] and count back towards last year’s class.”

Let’s take a step back: The SEC has new rules against over-signing, limiting each member school to sign a maximum of 25 recruits per year. However, there is a loophole if a signee is an early enrollee. The Macon Telegraph’s Seth Emerson explains it here.

Basically, an early enrollee can count against the 25-man limit with his current recruiting class, or “back-count” toward the previous class if that previous class had less than 25 signees. UGA signed 19 for its 2012 class, three enrolled early, and at least two of the three will count toward its 2011 class, which will make the final number at 16-17 for 2012.

The bottom line is that UGA could end up signing as many 33 for 2013, although somewhere between 26-30 is more likely.

All Richt will say on the record is that it could be one of his larger classes.

Mark Richt has reasons for keeping his 2013 projections a secret (AJC)

Mark Richt has reasons for keeping his 2013 projections a secret (AJC)

“Yes, it could be,” he said. “The bottom line is how much space do you have in the 85-man limit? That’s the bottom line. We’ve already had some attrition after this year’s recruiting class ended. And you could always end up having more attrition for various reasons.

“So between now and next year’s signing class, there’s a lot of things that can happen. That’s the hardest part about recruiting … it’s trying to get your numbers just right when all these parts are moving.”

Richt has a good idea what the number will be for the 2013 but he’s not going to go public with it. Why is that? Why keep it a secret? Richt has his reasons.

“Well, first, if you say what a number is, everybody will sit there and say that’s their target they’re trying to get; so if you come short of it, there’s conversation, and if you go over it, there’s conversation,” he explained.

“The reality is that the number is not a hard number. The number fluctuates. If you start throwing numbers out there, it almost becomes confusing to everybody if that number changes for one reason or another, if you see what I’m saying.

“I can’t tell you exactly how much space we got, that’s the reason why. Because it’s always changing, whether it’s a guy turning pro, whether it’s a guy that gets disciplined and gets dismissed from the team, whether it’s a guy who wants to transfer, or whether it’s a guy who gets hurt and gets a medical DQ … I mean, there are so many things that change your number. Or even sometimes, you’ll have a walk-on that you will put on scholarship, and you want to have the freedom to do that.

“So, for me to try and say what the number is, it moves too much and too often for us to say certainly where it is. So that’s why I like to stay away from that.”

UGA may already be halfway to its magic number with 15 early commitments for 2013.

Just my opinion, but I would not sign the maximum amount just in case someone decommits that we can really use. I don’t think it would hurt to leave a couple of scholarships open just in case. Now, I want to see some quality offensive linemen commiting SOON! If you can’t sign them from Ga., find them somewhere else. Just find them soon, before we’re in the same position we were in last year. Good Luck Coach Richt!!!

Any chance you can give your advice on Offensive Linemen UGA should concentrate on going after. They don’t have to be from this state…

All you Dawg fans accuse the best coach in the history of college football of oversigning and cutting players, and here is your own superleader doing it. This is oversigning, somebody out to create the Mark Richt rule, and close this ridiculous loophole.

Maybe Saban can give Richt some tips on grey-shirting, then we can sign about 40 or 50. Looks like you’re the only one in here crying about over-signing. Didn’t see anyone crying till you started posting.lol…

With Ramsey and others probably early enrollees in January, other SEC coaches only have a couple months left at best to try and “flip” them… Once the HS & College season starts plus playoffs running into December, there is no time left to do that. That’s why the 90 Minute “Skype” session the other day…. Time is running out.

For a program that has won 2 MNC’s in the last few years, Alabama sure has a bunch of whiny cry-babies with a chip on their shoulder! Once and for all to Bama fans: The AJC is a newspaper based in ATLANTA, GEORGIA!!! If you expect to receive positive press 100% of the time you should try reading newspapers based in Alabama. Also, why do you think the AJC blog writers mention Alabama so much? Because they know that all of you whiners will push the hits button! Take this article for example, the words “Alabama” or “Nick Saban” are not mentioned, yet who can MC always rely on to start posting? That’s right, a Bama fan. I’m sure there will be more to follow later. Enjoy your success Bama fans, but don’t expect the rest of us to kiss your butts and bow down to the great Saban. That’s not going to happen, especially when all of you show up on the AJC blogs every freaking day to remind everyone how special you are.

Here is Mark Richt’s secret. He recruits very well but fails to coach them once he signs them.

Right ?

NFL College Players Drafted by each Team

College – Alabama – Florida – LSU – UGA
2012.…….8..…………2.…….5.…….7
2011.…….5.………….4.…….6.…….6
2010.…….7.………….9.…….6.…….5
2009.…….4.………….3.…….6.…….6
2008.…….0.………….2.…….7.…….4
2007.…….3.………….9.…….5.…….5
2006.…….5.………….3.…….7.…….7
2005.…….4.………….3.…….3.…….6
2004.…….4.………….5.…….0.…….4
2003.…….5.………….8.…….4.…….7
2002.…….4.………….8.…….5.…….8
2001.…….3.………….4.…….3.…….7
Total…….52.….……60.…….57……72

Yet, Alabama has 2 BCS National Championships, LSU has 2 BCS National Championships, Florida has 2 BCS National Championships and Mark Richt none.

Go figure ?

Yet, the 2005 season was 8 years ago now this up-coming 2012 season. And, just look :

after 2005 :

1. .8000 at 64-16 LSU* 2 BCS NC
2. .7777 at 63-18 Florida* 2 BCS NC
3. .7246 at 50-19 Alabama* 2 BCS NC
4. .7051 at 55-23 Auburn* 1 BCS NC
5. .7000 at 56-24 Missouri* better than Mark Richt too putting us # 6 SEC
6. .6835 at 54-25 Georgia* # 6 of just 2012 SEC teams won/lost after 2005

Can anyone explain this DISCONNECT ?

To all of those Alabama- Nick Saban fan’s, who support his self serving, to hell with a kid who can’t crack the two deep roster, roster management practices.

This is what it will look like when you actually have the open scholarship numbers to sign a large class.

Maby Richt will actually sign more players than, Saban, Chizik, Miles and Spurrier for once, but I wouldn’t bet on it, Saban will find a way, any way and it won’t matter how or who has to get lied to.

Thomas Brown

May 14th, 2012
7:44 am

Mark Richt has only 76 of the 109 he signed remaining, after attrition of 33. So, with 76, not counting the 3 walk-ons who contribute only to the # 80 “Special” teams of Mark Richt – without a coach – plus 25 he can sign minus the 14 seniors and 5 juniors or so who might go pro rather than play LSU and Alabama 2013 without any of the defense remaining after 2012, you have :

76+25-14-5=82

Therefore Mark Richt if he doesn’t give away his scholarships to those then he never plays on offense or defense between now and signing day, can sign 25 for 2013 and count 3 more toward this 2012 class he way under-signed.

Or, he could sign-up 9 counting toward 2012 and still sign-up 25 for 2013, the answer being then 34 to your question. But, since he has given out 3 of those to walk-ons already I am going to guess his class should be 31 he signs in total.

He will sign 31 because he has signed 109 toward his 85-man limit as it is, and he figures he will run off, transfer out, force out, tell to please leave, kick-off, get arrested, get suspended, fail multiple drug tests and otherwise demonstrate that the players don’t give a hoot about the team concept of beating the top teams, only me me me.

___________

Real GT fan here, you know the kind that HATES BAMA like GT fans are supposed to, not these new wussified GT fans that like Bama only to get under the mutt’s skin.

Anyway, what CMR is doing or might do is NOT over signing because they are never going over the 85 man limit at any time.

What Saban does is go over the 85 man limit when it comes to arriving Freshmen PLUS players already in school and the he has to “get down” to 85 schollies by Aug. 1 or whenever the Freshmen Report to not go over the NCAA 85 man limit, that is over signing, temporarily going over the 85 man limit and then having to run off players or abuse the Medical Hardship rules to get under 85 by the deadline (Aug 1 or July 1).

The NCAA needs to remove the “deadline” and make HCs stay within 85 at all times 365- days of the year, then lets see how dominant Saban & Bama will be.

Back counting is OK because some schools get hit hard by transfers or actually disciplining their players or have players graduate and walk away with eligibility remaining and this back-counting allows those schools & HCs to get back to 85 schollies.

I am constantly amazed at how many Bama Fans don’t know anything about the “basics” of the NCAA rules nor do they care anything about the players on the field.

Yeah, right, there Mr. Blue Sky. True Mark Richt hasn’t beat the top teams in his 11 seasons to-date with but 3 wins out of 16 games against teams who achieved any top 10 poll.

True Mark Richt has had more NFL players drafted than any coach in The SEC.

True Mark Richt is # 6 in won/lost record of just 2012 SEC teams after the 2005 season, his last SEC Championship Season. 2005 season being 8 seasons ago now this up-coming 2012 season.

None of that matters.

Sky is blue.

We play Alabama and LSU both 2013 and lose the entire defense after 2012 for them both.

Only have 76 scholarships remaining of his last 109 he signed to his 85-man limit.

All of this means nothing.

Sky is blue.

The stats that you provided does say a lot. I think the biggest problem Georgia has had was because we stayed with Martinez 3 years, THREE YEARS, too long. Everybody knew that Martinez was not a good COORDINATOR but Mark Richt would not admit it because Martinez was his room mate and best friend in college.
Georgia is having the same problem now with Bobo being promoted to Offensive Coordinator when he only had been a coach for just a few years. WAY under qualified for a coordinator job. But with Adams loving the Dooley’s and Mark Richt liking Bobo a lot , knowing he was one DGD, Richt thought he could get Bobo up to speed by overseeing it personally himself because his back ground was offensive coordinator. It has taken longer than he though but Bobo is trying hard to be better and will get there eventually. Bobo is a good Quarterback recruiter and coach and he recruits South Georgia well.
I hope with Grantham in places for two years now and Bobo doing extra things like going to Jon Grudens instructional class on offensive schemes that we will finally get the pay off for staying with Martinez too long and Bobo too soon . Hopefully the Offense and Defense are finally on the same page.

Do not believe anything WnE says. He so much of a “GT fan” he rails against the HC for not signing ELITE RECRUITS and then Twitter-stalks the ELITE RECRUITS that CPJ does get to commit to the Institute…and hides behind his “I was new to Twitter excuse”.

Newsflash WnE. Tech fans still don’t like Bama. Being a Dolphins fan, I have ZERO respect for Nick Saban and even less respect for “the Elephant” after firing a class act like Mike Shula without giving him sufficient time to prove himself. Funny how he never gets any credit for recruiting the likes of Andre Smith, Glen Coffee, Demeco Ryans, Roman Harper and a host of other current NFL players. Bama fans are so desperate to build statues when that money should be given to the University…you know if they even cared 1/100th as much about their University’s academic ranking as opposed to its football ranking.

The numbers of top athletes available in 2013 and 2014 are enormous in the southeast. For excitement reason I know the rating agencies list each but after the top 5 many are equal. 2013 has 60 safeties with size, speed and the qualifications to be in top rated group, so: if you are signing a safety and they are in the top 60, you just may have the best.

R Backs: NUMBER 1 is D Henry, then 2 to 60 are all very close.
QB’s: Top 5 are in class by themselves: 6 through 60 have the ability to become great

LInebackers: top 3 are very special, 4 through 60 hve the ability to become great

Point of this post: tired of stars etc. many of the three star players in the 50s are as good as the 6th player on the list. 2013 has so many athletes, if you do not get one of the top 3 to 5 at a position, all others are about equal in talent and they are not far behind top 3 to 5.

2014 class will be another talent loaded class: WHO CAN COACH UP???

WnE is the only wussified GT fan I know. But regardless, Bama’s ability to over sign basically lost GT a 4* recruit (Davlin Tomlinson) in 2012. I don’t begrudge the recruit, Bama’s a national championship contender in the SEC, so I get the appeal. BUT how much of that is due to Nick Saban’s coaching (which he is a very good college coach), and how much is due to his oversigning and roster management? I can’t say for sure. I don’t think Alabama is quite as consistently good as they have been over the last 4 or so years without the oversigning, but then its tough to compare when most of the rest of the SEC is oversigning, too.
