Shaq Wiggins: UGA DB commit from Sandy Creek High School

DB Shaq Wiggins of Sandy Creek HS (AJC/Bob Andres)

DB Shaq Wiggins of Sandy Creek HS (AJC/Bob Andres)

  • Prospect: Shaq Wiggins, defensive back, Sandy Creek High School, Class of 2013
  • Colleges: Committed to UGA on Feb. 10, 2011, among his 20+ offers, which also include Tennessee, Ohio State and Michigan … Despite early commitment, Wiggins has continued to pick up offers, including South Carolina, Clemson, Vanderbilt and Tennessee … During an unofficial visit to Alabama, Wiggins said he was told by Nick Saban, “I’ll offer, if you commit today.”
  • Why UGA? “It’s good football, good education and good people. Coach [Mark Richt], from the way my family and I felt, is a good person. The coaches are truthful and straight up. Plus it’s the home state school.”
  • Vitals: 5-foot-9, 162 pounds. Clocked at 4.5 seconds in the 40-yard dash. Has 3.0 GPA, plans to major in Broadcast Journalism and will likely enroll early in college.
  • Recruiting rankings: 4-star and nation’s No. 86 prospect by ESPN, 4-star and nation’s No. 167 prospect by 247sports, 4-star and No. 11 DB by Scout, 3-star and No. 28 DB by Rivals.
  • Things to know: Considered to be the state’s top “cover corner” … Makes up for lack of size with feisty attitude and athleticism … During the 2011 season, Wiggins matched up every day in practice against senior WR JaQuay Williams (signed with Auburn) and sophomore WR Demarre Kitt (committed to UGA) … Transferred from Westlake to Sandy Creek during spring of his sophomore year … With outgoing personality and huge presence on Twitter, Shaq may be UGA’s most valuable recruit with his ability to persuade other recruits to consider the Bulldogs
  • They said it: “Shaq is a guy that can lock up with anybody. I know the whole deal about being a ‘cover corner’ and covering big wideouts and all that good stuff. I’m going to tell you this: Shaq Wiggins had a full year of covering 6-foot-3, 200-pound JaQuay Williams and 6-foot-2, 185-pound Demarre Kitt. You’re talking about two SEC wide receivers and Shaq more than held his own … I think this whole thing about size is a little overrated. If they can cover, they can cover. Shaq can cover.” – Sandy Creek coach Chip Walker
  • Random: Best hidden talent is juggling. “I can juggle apples or basketballs. It doesn’t matter. Anything.” … Favorite quote is by Deion Sanders: “If you look good, you feel good. If you feel good, you play good. If you play good, they pay good.” … Nickname? Called “Q” by father and “Head” by classmates

Like the 3.0 – Shaq, you may make it big, you may not – but that degree busts down plenty of doors, no matter where you go. I happen to have made a living for over a decade in broadcasting – and UGA has the best Broadcast Journalism school in the South – in my opinion. Just my opinion.

If – by chance – you’re reading this Shaq – and I know folks your age tend to – I’m a lifer for Georgia, but dont you dare put any stock in what any of these people on ANY blog says. Honor your committment, change it, decide to work for CBS – just be happy. This is your time to get an education – and the University of Georgia is a very fine place to do that – but remember that above football. Graduate with a degree and when you’re done with football – you have 40-60 years of life to live

Recall one champ Bailey? If you are good, you are good not matter where you attend college. The pro’s will find you even if you attend Kalamazoo.

UGA is a great college and BTW what has the gamecocks done over any extended period of time?

nh gamecock, Not many from SC either, six last I counted, one more than UGA, which has five, but UGA does have more players in the NFL 42, compared to SC only having 25 players in the NFL, and didn’t SC have a DB Akeem Auguste go undrafted this year?

You mean unless they play for a High-School Service Academy offense at Georgia Tech that doesn’t help them get ready for the pros?

I swear…nobody re-writes the narrative like Dwag fans.

Nh gamecock has the couth and presumably the breath of someone who routinely talks from his rear. Since 2000, Georgia’s produced 15 DBs drafted by the NFL to South Carolina’s 14. This is by far SC’s best position of strength but is only middle of the road for Georgia. This list also doesn’t include 1999 selection Champ Bailey who is one of the best all time. There’s absolutely no advantage for a DB recruit to select SC over UGA; unless you just have a thing for living in lame college towns and playing for loud mouth coaches.

Georgia since 2000
Brandon Boykin
Reshad Jones
Asher Allen
Paul Oliver
Tim Jennings
Greg Blue
DeMario Minter
Thomas Davis
Sean Jones
Bruce Thornton
Terreal Bierria
Jermaine Phillips
Tim Wansley
Jamie Henderson
Jeff Harris

South Carolina since 2000
Stephon Gilmore
Antonio Allen
Chris Culliver
Captain Munnerlyn
Stoney Woodson
Fred Bennett
Johnathan Joseph
Ko Simpson
Dunta Robinson
Deandre’ Eiland
Sheldon Brown
Andre’ Goodman
Willie Offord
Arturo Freeman

Congrats to UGA picking up a very good commit!! It is a given that the SEC produces great players; kudos to SC for being so much better in the last years; their talent level has improved by recruiting so many players out of the state of GA and keeping their top players in state; CRG, take note, the SEC schools are getting stronger because of picking up top notch talent out of the state of GA!! Will Friend, start recruiting in-state OL; guys you have scholarships to give!! C’mon guys do your job!! C’mon Man!!

You’d think he want to play for a team that didn’t a 4th choice for coordinator who can’t stop ranked teams from lighting up the scoreboard.

But hey, he’s closer to home and the pressure won’t be as bad at a mid-tier school.

I saw Gainesville-Sandy Creek playoff game in playoffs where Gvlle QB, soph Watson threw for over 300 yards and I honestly never even noticed Wiggins. If he’s that good, he should have made some kind of impression.

GeoffDawg

b, the best corners never get noticed during game play because the offense won’t dare to throw near them. It’s probably the only position where a mark of quality is lack of recognition.

Good story…I would like to see this series continue but focus on those who stay in Georgia (not just UGA) to play college ball. At the end of the day, student athletes should commit to the school that is the best fit but shouldn’t we encourage our best players to stay in state?
