There’s some good news about UGA’s 2012 football recruiting class.
Mark Richt told the AJC that all 19 members are on track to qualify academically and be able to report for football practice this summer.
“Yes, everybody is in the race … everybody is still alive, so that’s a good thing,” Richt said.
Last February, UGA assembled a class of 19 signees, with three enrolling early in college – QB Faton Bauta, RB Keith Marshall and junior college OL Mark Beard.
The remaining 16 are scheduled to report later this summer. For each recruit to be admitted to UGA, they have to meet college entrance requirements, with a qualifying GPA and SAT/ACT score, among other things.
This year, it is more critical than normal that UGA has all of its signees qualify because the Bulldogs signed a small-than-normal class with 19, and they’ve had around 10 players affected by transfers, dismissals and partial suspensions since the end of last season.
Last summer, UGA had 24 of 26 signees from its 2011 class make it to campus. What happened to the other two? LB Kent Turene enrolled in a prep school and was scheduled to sign again with UGA in February. However, Turene was not able to make it through the NCAA Clearinghouse and decided to enroll elsewhere as a partial qualifier.
Meanwhile, DT Chris Mayes enrolled at Gulf Coast (Miss.) junior college and has committed to UGA for 2013.
After Mayes reported to junior college last summer, Richt admitted that he knew that was the likely scenario all along.
When was asked if there was 2012 signee in the same situation as Mayes, with UGA’s coaches knowing well in advance that a specific recruit won’t qualify, Richt said “No … We’re expecting everybody to report.”
WHILE WAITING FOR CINCO DE MAYO …

“If 2 did not qualify last year then it seems that this is a story.”
Let the backpedalling begin. Sure its a story, but you said it was a “concern.” It is not a concern Techie. You simply made that up. That’s what you do for the most part. You make things up.
Thanks.

MoDawg, you are surprised? Tech fans are free to trash UGA 24/7/365 but if we return the favor they go running straight to their mommies and cry about what big fat meanies we are. They are a total joke.
Thanks.

@JB…you dream about beating Alabama in 2012 sport. Alabama’s defense will at the same level this year as last! Unlike UGA Bama is locked and loaded and well coached. There will 10-12 players off this 2012 team that will be drafted in the NFL. Then again do what UGA folks do better than most everyone…Talk.

Mo, you will never see dawgfan engage in anything but trash talk. I took a little good natured shot and you took offense, sorry. But in the end, I’m here to discuss football, all kinds. Just read everything I’ve written since. Dawgfan is one of a kind, never brings anything to the table except hate.

Personally, I would like to know how many of GA Tech’s student/athletes (S/A) do not qualify? That subject is not discussed, ever. Also, what percentage of S/A’s do not qualify for all colleges? This is just an opportunity for someone who has nothing else to write about, to put something out on a blog, to get some attention. Michael, you can do better than this.

yes dawgfan, all tech fans are terrible and you are just defending your allegiance. If that helps you sleep at night, then good for you. But there are dozens upon dozens of pages of these blogs, mostly the tech ones, that show what you truly are. A loser, hate filled little troll. Enjoy your pathetic existence. The lazy head coach has not signed a full slate for at least the last three years. He would have to come out of his office. Not going to happen. We need a full time head coach.

19 will enter …. but on par with Richt’s past, only 10 will make it their entire 4 yeard through school without being arrested for drugs or alcohol due to a lack of discipline from the coaching staff …… It’s like the movie Groundhog Day ….. every year a new recruiting class comes in, every year a couple more UGA players get arrested ….

And so do we. Many a big time athlete go out of state because they simply can’t get in UGA or GT. The problem is, even though so many fans complain about losing out on a kid sometimes, the school cannot come out and say, “sorry, he went to ____ because he could not qualify.” – though that would help. At UGA, Jam Kemp changed everything 25 years ago in how we recruit. We are different than most in the SEC.

We sure need them all to beat some of these top teams. Perhaps we have 6 more walk-ons to give a Full Scholarship to for 2012 along with the 3 we already did ? Sure would be nice to have 85 on Scholarship, even if 9 were not given a Scholarship 2012.

I’m sorry but MC…your work is as DawginLex states..A PILE OF CRAP! All of it! I’ve never read one piece of quality information from anything you do. NOTHING! You don’t write about any other schools…just come up with crap about UGA??
Why don’t you write up something on GA State…GT…GA Southern?? GA State just had their 1st player drafted…why don’t you write about how that may help their recruiting efforts?? GT has 1 verbal pledge to their 2013 class…write about that so all of these GT TROLL’S can have something to talk about instead of spouting off about stuff they have absolutely NO CLUE about??
You’re a joke and I’m scratching my head as to why you have a job…..and people wonder why the AJC’s such a rag….DINOMITE PIECE! HA! WHAT GARBAGE!

“Will all 19 of UGA’s football signees meet NCAA entrance requirements?”
“Mark Richt told the AJC that all 19 members are on track to qualify academically and be able to report for football practice this summer.”
M C – Looks like you answered your own headline in the first sentence of the article. I think that you could have chosen a much less misleading headling for this type of article. I guess you follow in the footsteps of all the other A J C reporters and have a tendency to sensationalize headlines so page views go up. Thanks for the info but you could have chosen a much better way to deliver it.

“Will all residents of Atlanta get robbed or carjacked today?”
And then the 1st sentence of the article stated: “Atlnta police told the A J C that no one was robbed or carjacked today”
What if all the other writers of this paper chose to write headlines and articles this way??? What a joke

I’m glad to see some other folks mention the reality of these 2 classes. Not only is this a rich class (2013 in talent) but particualrly in OL and WR.
Had we signed more OL this year just to be doing so, there are some it would cost us next year. Numbers aren’t the problem on the Oline. We have signed as many as everybody else in the previuos few years. Experience is the problem, and taking some,JUST to be taking some this year would not have helped that. There are guys out there in the 2013 class that will still probably play before they would.

Hey I wish we had filled it up too, but there is not anything wrong with giving some walk on’s a scholarship. Especially if its basically a place holder for next year when the class is much better.
The problem with just “counting” is that it overlooks that the 19 we did sign were in needs positions. Absolutely killed it on the defensive front line. How many 4 star DL do you rememebr us signing one year? And the kickers we needed. And at RB. One so good that appearantly he singlehandedly offsets 11 years of the miserable failure of Coach Richt.
And of the 3 OL we did sign, 2 will play right away. 6 last year. But yes, we could have RS more 1 star Oline from this class for the sake of getting to 85.

As long as we play a close game and have some good stats against UGA I’m satisfied. I don’t have much in the way of expectations when that game is played.
