Naim Mustafaa: Georgia Tech legacy has change of heart, lists UGA as co-leader

Only a few days after saying he “really wasn’t a Georgia fan,” one of the state’s top college football prospects at linebacker now has UGA as one of his finalists, along with Georgia Tech.

Naim Mustafaa, a 6-foot-4, 235-pounder from Alpharetta High School, told the AJC on Tuesday night that the two archrivals are his finalists, and that he will make his college decision later this spring – or by early summer, at the latest.

Then he corrected himself with the “finalists” terminology. “Georgia Tech and Georgia are at the top of my list. Behind them are Tennessee and Auburn. I’m still going to look at them some. But at the top of my list are Georgia Tech and UGA.”

What changed with UGA? The Bulldogs reached out to Mustafaa via Facebook last weekend. Apparently, UGA hadn’t been keeping in touch on a regular basis with Mustafaa, which made him think that the Bulldogs were no longer interested. Mustafaa is one of the state’s most heavily recruited prospects with 25 early scholarship offers.

UGA got back into the sweepstakes after recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner had a long conversation over the weekend with the 4-star prospect’s father, Najee Mustafaa, who starred at Georgia Tech under the name of Reggie Rutland and played seven seasons in the NFL.

The two sides kissed and made up, with UGA saying he was the team’s No. 1 recruiting target at outside linebacker, among other things. Mustafaa liked what he heard so much that he and his family will be taking an unofficial visit with Bulldogs either this Saturday or next.

“There was a lot of stuff we had to discuss,” Mustafaa said. “There was a reason they fell off my board. But it was actually just a little miscommunication. It was nothing too serious. We had a good talk, and I’m going to get back down there, talk with their coaches again, and tour the campus.”

What about Georgia Tech? Mustafaa is high on the Yellow Jackets after making an unofficial visit for last Friday’s spring game.

“It was a good experience under the lights last Friday night,” he said. “They had good fan support … Georgia Tech is a great school, and going there would guarantee me a good future. You can go there and play good football and get a good education.”

The Georgia Tech legacy said his father isn’t pressuring him in any direction.

“He’s not pushing Tech, he’s not pushing anybody. That’s why we’re going back to UGA. He wants me to weigh out all of my options. In the end, he wants this to be my decision.”

  • RELATED: West Forsyth High School running back Blake Roberts will sign with Presbyterian (S.C.) College, according to his father. “Blake had several late offers from Div. I and I-AA schools but picked PC overall. He will go in third on the depth chart and have a chance to play in his freshman and sophomore seasons.” Georgia Tech will play host to Presbyterian on Sept. 8.

This is classic Rodney Garner. UGA was the first school to tender an offer to Mustafaa, then forgets he exists, and then has to be reminded by a newspaper article that he hasn’t contacted him in forever. Coach Garner is a great dline coach but we need a new recruiting coordinator. I’m sick of this same storyline over the last three years. Mr. Mustafaa, thanks for giving us a second chance. Go Dawgs!

This Mustafaa guy makes me scratch my head. If he’s seriously considering UGA over GT even though his father went to GT, then I don’t want him. Good riddance. CPJ will find someone better. Go Jackets!!!

@RamblingMan, that’s a ridiculous post. ALL kids look around. I feel good about our chances of landing him vs. the school with the tanned preacher and a defense full of unsavory characters.

This gets the kid fixed right. We knew he would want to play for Dawgs once we offer. He knows that Dawgs is the Big Dawgs in state. We sign him if we want.

Has anyone else ever noticed that blue chip recruits never mention Turkey Neck as a positive force in their recruitment? Example: We hear all the time how CMR’s character and personality scores well with a recruit and their family. With Captain Fish Fry? Not so much. I hope Tech keeps him forever. No class, can’t recruit, wont win big without it.

@Techie 4

I don’t think so at all. It makes no sense that a kid whose father went to GT and who just the other day spoke so highly of GT would switch on a dime like that. He’s not all-in with GT and I don’t want him. CPJ can find another 4-star recruit at his position who wants to be at GT.

I disagree with you on O’Leary and Gailey’s recruiting. They were both terrific recruiters.

O’Leary we don’t have any good numbers on but we do know he got GT to start accepting more special admits which ended up causing flunk gate and setting GT back for the future. For that reason alone I can’t call him a good recruiter. Plus he openly talked about the difficulty of recruitng at GT. Gailey was just an awful recruiter. Most of his classes weren’t even rated in the top 50 and he signed over 20 two star players one year. He had one recruiting class that actually came together in 2007. Other then that year he was far worse then CPJ.

Really humorous comments…before, when it sounded like UGA wasn’t even consideration, the insults were flying at this kid from you Bulldog fans. Starting with his name, insinuating that he was better off in Atlanta with the terrorists and thugs, to the fact that UGA already had a ton of better prospects committed than him and you weren’t even interested in him.

I hope Naim was reading these blogs so he can see for himself how you fans REALLY think about him. It would serve you right.

For all you GT fans try and read between the lies here.

His dad went to GT but “won’t push GT”, sounds very familiar to what Milton’s Carl Lawson Jr.’s father had to say about GT only his dad went a step farther and was reported to have have told CPJ, “I want my son to have a well-rounded College experience”.

What happens at GT to FB players such that they don’t want their sons to play for GT or they want them to seriously consider “other options”?

My theory is that when it came down to brass tacks, Naim & his father looked at Grantham’s version of the 3-4 and compared it to CAG’s version of the 3-4 and then thought about their NFL prospects at both schools, and it was at this point that UGA got back in the picture.

Regardless of what school you “loved as a kid” getting to the NFL trumps all of that.

I think he ends up at Tenn. screaming rocky top before it is all said and done, if he were going to choose GT he would have already chosen GT by now.

When local Metro Atl. Recruits look around for a long time, it means they are looking for another option other than GT and CPJ, it means they are usually looking for another school to step up and give them the offer they need to choose someplace other than GT.

Just my 2 cents.

The good thing is that with all of these top prospects coming down to GT & other schools is it will make my future postings in Feb. 2013 very easy since the rest of my detractors won’t be able to play the “Academics Card” and claim that “our Elite Academics kept us from signing more top prospects out of Ga. in 2013″.

Like I have said hundreds of times on this Blog & other AJC blogs, there are PLENTY of high 3*, 4* & up Recruits that can do the Academics at GT, GT’s problem is that they don’t close very well on those Recruits.

2013 is shaping up as yet another Recruiting Class that will validate my claims on this matter.

I cant believe you Tech fans do not want a recruit because he list UGA and Tech as co-leaders. That could be a HUGE reason why top recruits do not want to play there and yall pull in 2 and low 3 star recruits. Yall should be happy that the TOP OLB in the state of GA is even considering yall. Tech fans need to throw yalls hatred for UGA aside when it comes to landing top recruits. Tech needs all the talent yall cant get or yall will continue this down spiral when it comes to football….but hey, yall only care about academics!!

Once he visits Georgia and see the availability of good looking women, tech is out of the question.
Great football program surrounded by outstanding athletes give him a chance to shine.
Incredible extra curricular activities will be icing on the cake. Let’s remember these are 18 year old boys with raging hormones. Compare how many athletes Georgia puts in the NFL over Tech and there is no decision.
