Naim Mustafaa: Georgia Tech legacy has change of heart, lists UGA as co-leader

Only a few days after saying he “really wasn’t a Georgia fan,” one of the state’s top college football prospects at linebacker now has UGA as one of his finalists, along with Georgia Tech.

Naim Mustafaa, a 6-foot-4, 235-pounder from Alpharetta High School, told the AJC on Tuesday night that the two archrivals are his finalists, and that he will make his college decision later this spring – or by early summer, at the latest.

Then he corrected himself with the “finalists” terminology. “Georgia Tech and Georgia are at the top of my list. Behind them are Tennessee and Auburn. I’m still going to look at them some. But at the top of my list are Georgia Tech and UGA.”

What changed with UGA? The Bulldogs reached out to Mustafaa via Facebook last weekend. Apparently, UGA hadn’t been keeping in touch on a regular basis with Mustafaa, which made him think that the Bulldogs were no longer interested. Mustafaa is one of the state’s most heavily recruited prospects with 25 early scholarship offers.

UGA got back into the sweepstakes after recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner had a long conversation over the weekend with the 4-star prospect’s father, Najee Mustafaa, who starred at Georgia Tech under the name of Reggie Rutland and played seven seasons in the NFL.

The two sides kissed and made up, with UGA saying he was the team’s No. 1 recruiting target at outside linebacker, among other things. Mustafaa liked what he heard so much that he and his family will be taking an unofficial visit with Bulldogs either this Saturday or next.

“There was a lot of stuff we had to discuss,” Mustafaa said. “There was a reason they fell off my board. But it was actually just a little miscommunication. It was nothing too serious. We had a good talk, and I’m going to get back down there, talk with their coaches again, and tour the campus.”

What about Georgia Tech? Mustafaa is high on the Yellow Jackets after making an unofficial visit for last Friday’s spring game.

“It was a good experience under the lights last Friday night,” he said. “They had good fan support … Georgia Tech is a great school, and going there would guarantee me a good future. You can go there and play good football and get a good education.”

The Georgia Tech legacy said his father isn’t pressuring him in any direction.

“He’s not pushing Tech, he’s not pushing anybody. That’s why we’re going back to UGA. He wants me to weigh out all of my options. In the end, he wants this to be my decision.”

  • RELATED: West Forsyth High School running back Blake Roberts will sign with Presbyterian (S.C.) College, according to his father. “Blake had several late offers from Div. I and I-AA schools but picked PC overall. He will go in third on the depth chart and have a chance to play in his freshman and sophomore seasons.” Georgia Tech will play host to Presbyterian on Sept. 8.

This is classic Rodney Garner. UGA was the first school to tender an offer to Mustafaa, then forgets he exists, and then has to be reminded by a newspaper article that he hasn’t contacted him in forever. Coach Garner is a great dline coach but we need a new recruiting coordinator. I’m sick of this same storyline over the last three years. Mr. Mustafaa, thanks for giving us a second chance. Go Dawgs!

Has anyone else ever noticed that blue chip recruits never mention Turkey Neck as a positive force in their recruitment? Example: We hear all the time how CMR’s character and personality scores well with a recruit and their family. With Captain Fish Fry? Not so much. I hope Tech keeps him forever. No class, can’t recruit, wont win big without it.

I don’t think so at all. It makes no sense that a kid whose father went to GT and who just the other day spoke so highly of GT would switch on a dime like that. He’s not all-in with GT and I don’t want him. CPJ can find another 4-star recruit at his position who wants to be at GT.

I disagree with you on O’Leary and Gailey’s recruiting. They were both terrific recruiters.

O’Leary we don’t have any good numbers on but we do know he got GT to start accepting more special admits which ended up causing flunk gate and setting GT back for the future. For that reason alone I can’t call him a good recruiter. Plus he openly talked about the difficulty of recruitng at GT. Gailey was just an awful recruiter. Most of his classes weren’t even rated in the top 50 and he signed over 20 two star players one year. He had one recruiting class that actually came together in 2007. Other then that year he was far worse then CPJ.

For all you GT fans try and read between the lies here.

His dad went to GT but “won’t push GT”, sounds very familiar to what Milton’s Carl Lawson Jr.’s father had to say about GT only his dad went a step farther and was reported to have have told CPJ, “I want my son to have a well-rounded College experience”.

What happens at GT to FB players such that they don’t want their sons to play for GT or they want them to seriously consider “other options”?

My theory is that when it came down to brass tacks, Naim & his father looked at Grantham’s version of the 3-4 and compared it to CAG’s version of the 3-4 and then thought about their NFL prospects at both schools, and it was at this point that UGA got back in the picture.

Regardless of what school you “loved as a kid” getting to the NFL trumps all of that.

I think he ends up at Tenn. screaming rocky top before it is all said and done, if he were going to choose GT he would have already chosen GT by now.

When local Metro Atl. Recruits look around for a long time, it means they are looking for another option other than GT and CPJ, it means they are usually looking for another school to step up and give them the offer they need to choose someplace other than GT.

Just my 2 cents.

The good thing is that with all of these top prospects coming down to GT & other schools is it will make my future postings in Feb. 2013 very easy since the rest of my detractors won’t be able to play the “Academics Card” and claim that “our Elite Academics kept us from signing more top prospects out of Ga. in 2013″.

Like I have said hundreds of times on this Blog & other AJC blogs, there are PLENTY of high 3*, 4* & up Recruits that can do the Academics at GT, GT’s problem is that they don’t close very well on those Recruits.

2013 is shaping up as yet another Recruiting Class that will validate my claims on this matter.

Well, tide roll, I recall you posting here that Saban was late getting in the Cam Newton hunt in 2010 because you claimed Nick thought Cam was a UGA lock! If tide roll was correct about Saban and Smart dropping the ball, it cost Bama a NC. You can’t make this stuff up! Unreal!

Now Kirby and Nick get a second chance at a Cam clone. I wonder if Bama has even offered this kid. Maybe some knowledgeable Tide fans can post and let us know, since tide roll evidently did not even know that Bama’s award winning offensive lineman Barrett Jones attended a private Christian high school.

Everybody in my family went to UGA except my uncle and me and we all get along and just give each other a little extra grief each time we play. The kid is weighing his options like all prospects should instead of jumping at the first option and what looks good at the time. I am sure he heard or read what many a UGA fan thought of him, his father, his race, and his religion on the last post and that alone could hurt UGAs chances. No need to worry until February. I think many LBs will look differently at GT when they see how Days, Watts, Attaochu, and Nealy perform this season.

I said I wasn’t going to make excuses but if you’re going to exaggerate and pull things out of your Techie butt I feel obliged to respond. The trash problem is confined to a relatively small area on North Campus. Yes, it shouldn’t happen. Yes, its embarassing. NO, it does not involve THOUSANDS of people. You simply made that up. That’s what Tech fans do. They make things up and lie.

Instances of crybaby Tech fans throwing things on the field are not isolated incidents. It was so bad during the 2007 VT game that they had to stop play to clean it up. It was on ESPN for all the world to see. I’m pretty sure it was mentioned in ESPN’s article on the game if you would like me to dig it up and thrash you. It was either the 2008 or 2009 Boston College game where crybaby Tech fans did the same exact thing. Matt Ryan was making an absolute mockery of your pizz ant sissy defense so Tech fans responded the only way they know how, by stomping their feet like little children and pitching a crybaby hissy fit and throwing things on the field. Again, play had to be stopped on national television to clean it up. Finally, the announcers during the 2009 Chicken Bowl where you were getting your lilly little azzes kicked by a team with a losing SEC record noted that Tech fans were throwing things on the field late in the game. Don’t try and deny it. I know what I saw.

What changed with UGA? The Bulldogs reached out to Mustafaa via Facebook last weekend. Apparently, UGA hadn’t been keeping in touch on a regular basis with Mustafaa, which made him think that the Bulldogs were no longer interested.

The two sides kissed and made up, with UGA saying he was the team’s No. 1 recruiting target at outside linebacker, among other things.

——————————————-

Let’s see …. per R.Gardner, the kid is UGA’s No.1 target at OLB, yet UGA had to “reach out via Facebook” b/c they hadn’t stayed in regular contact???

2007 against VT was the student section fed up with biased officiating and, even though they were exactly right, should not have been tolerated. GTBob it’s called pride. Something that every kid should have in one’s home state and I don’t mean just in Georgia. As much as I would love to see the both of our schools land top notch player’s from other state’s and don’t get them. I may fill a little disappointed, but I don’t blame them the least bit if they decide to stay in state and play for the home team. My biggest gripe by a long shot, is that if you are picking a school basically, to just play a sport, then why not go to the school that has represented your state for most of your life? There are circumstance’s that could sway you to another school. One of them is if you are from another state and your parents moved to Georgia for what ever reason. To me, you then would feel no obligation to stay in state. Another good reason for leaving is the field in which you wish to make a career. Shoot even though I have been a dawg fan my entire life, I grew up wanting to be a architect or a astronaut. Not exactly UGA strong points. Most likely I would have chosen Tech or one of the Academies. I could see a medical student wanting to go to Vanderbilt, a law student Harvard. There are school’s like Duke, Northwestern, Standford, MIT that when a kid say’s, I will be attending so and so school because of it’s academics and then turn right around and commit to Alabama, Auburn where in all actuality, both these school’s are a joke as far as academics go. I can also see a kid wanting to get away and by away I don’t mean right across the street to South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama or Florida. I mean to Oregon, USC, Michigan,Oklahoma, you know school’s that are actually away from Georgia. In the end you right. A kid has a right to go where he pleases. Just stop using the lame excuse that you give when you decide to go to this school or that school. When saying that I am committing to the University of Alabama for their academics. Please, not even you would by that line of BS. You are going there for football and for no other reason and if that is your reasoning, why not stay in state and help one of the home schools?

____________

Nowhere in that diatribe of drivel did you once mention that his own FATHER is indifferent to GT at best despite playing for GT and making it to the NFL from GT.

If guys that played for GT, that also made it to the NFL, don’t have good memories of GT, then that is a systematic issue that GT needs to “work on”.

You talk about everything under the sun, including what WnE has to say but you don’t say a d@mn thing about what his own father has to say.

Maybe if his Dad were to say, “GT is great place for you to spend the best 4 years of your life at while playing CFB, If I were in your situation I’d give GT a long look”.

Instead his Dad stays “neutral” and turns into Switzerland when it comes to making a recommendation to go to GT.

BTW, since you want to relieve CAG of any accountability, in CTG’s 3-4 in the 2nd yr. Muttville was a Top-10 Defense and looked the part and would have been better if not for Murray’s untimely TOs.

IN CAG’s 2nd yr. running the 3-4 they looked like crap and most opponents ran the ball down our throat, and when opponents needed to pass and the entire Stadium knew the pass was coming CAG’s 3-4 still got burned. UGA’s young WRs made our DBs look like crap, Utah had a crappy passing game and made our DBs look like crap.

The only time GT looked good on Defense last yr. was when Clemson a mentally FRAGILE Teams for at least a decade had their normal yearly brain-fart, Clemson playing poorly doesn’t mean GT played good Defense.

Oh yeah, this is yet another example that GT does indeed recruit 80-85% of the same guys that everyone else is recruiting, so the playing the “Academics Card” needs to cease among the BLT segment of the GT fanbase.

GT has always been a tough place to recruit to; however, they always managed to get a hand full of good players and some sleepers. Under CPJ they can’t get anybody. The one or two 4 stars they get bolt as soon as a major team offers. If they get lucky, GT gets an athelete they hope to mold into a player, i.e. Days. And they only get a couple of those. IMO: Its time for the Jackets to look elsewhere.

Common Sense Man……WRONG
So Sobe Didn’t SELL as much as COKE so they are loser right?
You MUTTS are fools.
Compare the Production capacity to market share gained.

UGA has MORE PRODUCTION capability and does LESS with it.
TECH has LESS PRODUCTION capability and does MORE with it.

UGa SHOULD BEAT Tech on Talent ALONE. ACC talent against SEC(GOD’s FOOTBALL CONFERENCE in your eyes) talent. What TECH does with ACC Talent against the ACC is better then’t what RICHT does with SEC Talent against the SEC. Richt can beat the EZ teams but can’t win a GAME that matters after his first 4 years.

That is APPLES to APPLES.

Tech in the ACC is out recruited(by rankings) by more than half the teams.
UGa in the SEC out recruits(by the rankings) more than half the teams.
Johnson and Richt have the same record over the last 4 years.
Johnson is doing MORE with Less
Richt is doing Less with More.

I know you MUTTS can’t do cause and effect analysis on the Graduation rate so WHY would I think you could understand Market Share to Market comparison of the ACC to the SEC?

You entire rant is impeached because CPJ is the REASON that he has less to work with, after all he is the one doing the Recruiting, if he could Recruit like Harbaugh when he was at Stanford, then he’d have 3 first-round draft picks this yr. like Stanford is expected to have and back-to-back 12 win seasons.

How can you honestly “brag” that CPJ does more with LESS, when he’s the main reason that he’s got LESS to start with?

He’s going into his 5th season on the field and his 6th Recruiting class, shouldn’t that be enough time to make sure that he no longer has LESS to work with?

Harbaugh at Stanford (tougher academics than GT) made sure he didn’t have LESS after about 2 Recruiting Classes maybe 3.

CPJ creates his own HANDICAP, and then you wanna brag about it as if that is a strength!

When CPJ was first hired, my detractors claimed that he would significantly IMPROVE GT’s recruiting since so many of the HS HCs knew him from his Ga. Sou. days AND since so many HSs ran a version of “his Offense”!

Now after 5 years of MEDIOCRE RECRUITING, now you claim that’s he a great HC because he does more with LESS!

What happened to CPJ improving GT’s recruiting so much by expanding the pool of potential recruits since so many HS HCs run a version of his “System”?

What happened to those crappy theories?

Where are those guys that claimed WnE was wrong and CPJ would be a great Recruiter and give CMR “a run for his money”?

WnE…… It’s hard to bust Johnson on recruiting. He is after all 3rd in line for Ga’s top players. After Saban decides whether or not to offer a Ga player, Richt gets his chance then Johnson!!

POAWnE………..

UGa is not a Front runner.
MUCH depends on Al Groh’s(job) D this year and the Early Playing Time Available as compared to UGa’s D and Early Playing Time.
UGa is losing a lot or Seniors on D after this year but look at the back-ups.
UGa is in the BEST position in 7 years to win the SEC East and maybe the Whole SEC. If they fall not sur what the young man will think.
GT is a good D away from playing for the ACC Title every year. The ACC puts MANY O-Line and D-Players in the NFL. He needs to see the depth chart at tech to see his chance for early playing time.

Dawg fans– The Lion King could be “f-in” with the Dawg Nation just so he can let us down. ie Tony Parker. There are 2 choices for him 1)Real Man, 2) Fly Crap. “Real man” will step up and commit to the winning program. “Fly Crap” will use the fake interest in UGA for publicity. (which he better get now because when he hits the black & yellow hole we will never hear from him again,)

This in-state crap is a bunch of bunk. I didn’t stay in-state to go to college, I came to Atlanta from Colorado to go to GT, and now I’ve been here almost 20 years. I did it in my own self-interest, I believed it was the best school for me. I was all-in for GT after I decided to come, but I certainly wasn’t all-in before I made my decision. Every person has to make the best decision for themselves. GT isn’t for everyone. But if Naim looks around and see what others have to offer, and realistically evaluates everything, I think he will see that GT offers him a great opportunity to play on a winning football program, a great opportunity to get a top notch education, and just as good an opportunity to get to the next level in footbal as any other school if he has the skills, desire and work-ethic.

This is all just a waste of time. Any of you above that have not gone through the whole college selection process with a child of your own should just refrain from making any comments.

I am in the middle of the process myself, granted not with football in the mix, but other athletics. I would love to see my kid go to college where I did, but it may not be the right fit for him, whether it’s academics, coaching philosophy, teammate chemistry, etc.

What I take away is that I want my kid to make his own decision on what he thinks is best. The only influence I try to have is to get him to consider all the variables so that his decision is the best one for him.

Whether a kid decides UGA or GT is based on many factors, or should be at least. In the end, it needs to be what’s best in their own opinion adn we should all respect them for that.

Good luck to the young man wherever he goes. I hope he chooses GT if it’s right for him. If it isn’t, then so be it.

Stupid is as stupid does. Hang in there not so smart. I am on the verge of inventing a vaccine for stupidity. If you are black and attend GaTech, you are either an athlete or a janitor. Maybe not all, but the vast majority are white. So that little jab at Georgia is a complete joke and coming from someone that claims to be a GaTech fan, though you would have had a clue. Just say this over and over until it sinks in. Vaccine for stupidity, vaccine for stupidity…………. is just around the corner.
