Tony Parker: Memphis coach blames his wife for NCAA violation

Tony Parker is in the national news, and not only for his impending college announcement.

Memphis coach Josh Pastner tweeted the name of Tony Parker this week. Memphis is considered a longshot for the basketball star (AJC)

The Atlanta schoolboy basketball legend will sign with Duke, UGA, UCLA, Kansas or Ohio State at 4 p.m. Monday at Miller Grove High School.

Parker was in the news on Thursday, for other reasons – actually a pretty funny story that has been picked up by the national media outlets, including Deadspin.

Memphis coach Josh Pastner said he self-reported a secondary NCAA violation after accidentally tweeting the words “Tony Parker” from the basketball team’s official Twitter account.

Pastner claimed he was simply putting Parker’s name in Twitter’s search engines and simply typed it in the wrong space – which is completely understandable.

However, the funny part was the contributing factors behind the Twitter confusion that Pastner explained to the Memphis Commercial-Appeal:

“My wife was yelling at me because I was on the phone too loud. I was waking [the couple's infant daughter] up and waking my wife up because I had the TV on. She was complaining that I not only woke my daughter up, but I also woke the baby inside her up because she’s pregnant.”

Too funny … blaming your wife for an NCAA violation.

One other note on that: I’m still not sure that Pastner actually committed an NCAA violation by simply tweeting the words “Tony parker.” Yes, it is against NCAA rules for coaches to comment on prospective student-athletes. However, in that same rule, it is also clearly permissible for coaches to publicly confirm that they are recruiting a player.  That’s another topic for another day …

Back to Tony Parker: If you type his name in correct space on the Google or Twitter search engines, you will see that there are plenty of rumors circulating about the 6-foot-9, 280-pound power forward – which is very common for a player of his magnitude. One of the rumors is that Parker may try to sneak in another visit to UGA before Monday, since it’s so close in proximity.

“I’m not aware of that but I really don’t know enough to make a comment on that at this point,” Miller Grove coach Sharman White told the AJC on Thursday. “I’m there with Tony but I’m not at his home.

“Right now, [the recruiting process] is really between him and his family. They’re getting down to the nitty gritty. Tony is trying to figure out his clear choice, or either making sure he’s comfortable with whatever school he’s thinking about signing with. We’ll find out on Monday.”

What’s wrong with typing “Tony Parker”? There are many Tony Parkers in the world. In fact, couldn’t the coach say he’s a fan of the Spurs PG? I don’t see what the big deal is.

What a joke. Pastner made an honest mistake.

Of course he now has more NCAA violations at Memphis than Calipari has at Kentucky.

D White got some splaining todo when Nick returns from DC. The story is still unclear as of today with about 4 folks involved including White. The two guys that fired the guns aren’t football players and one guy hurt is a bouncer. At 2:30 in the AM before your team leaves for DC to meet the President and you’re out and about. This guy was believed to be a pretty good player but two early entry receivers have stolen his thunder some. I think we’re a day or so away due to the trip before we know who is on 1st base. There is 3 guys on the bubble Bowman,Carswell(both georgiee folks) along with Cris Carter’s soon that might be releashed in early May when the school year is done. Nick is taking no sheet from Cris or Duron Carter. One has to assume this guy has worked little for anything in life and has 0 discipline. The bouncer at the club was a trained fighter and he got his bell wrong so they say. Roll Tide. Nick Saban doesn’t like to be embarrassed by college players not toeing the line. Should be interesting.

@tide troll – don’t worry about our offensive line. Just make sure you’re in the GA Dome the first weekend of December and then worry about our offensive line….or at least what will be coming from behind it (Malcome, Crowell, Marshall, Samuel).

Michael, care to elaborate on why Tony Parker is a “schoolboy basketball legend”? He isn’t the best big man to ever come out of Georgia (Howard, Favors, Smith both more high touted) and he isn’t winning a lot of national awards like others have. What makes him deserving of the title “schoolboy legend” which you have used several times in recent columns?

The longer it takes for him to commit, the more Ilike UGA’s chances. Lets be honest here, UGA is considered a second rate basketball program. I love my dogs but I’m being honest. Wouldn’t you wait as long as you could to make sure you really wanted to go to a second rate program when you could commit right away to a team that will be back in the sweet 16 before Tony Parker leaves? If the Dogs get parker, they will still be second rate but will not be there for long. Go DAWGS!

Does signing with Georgia indicate you aren’t really interested in postseason basketball?

I would think its time for Coach Fox to start making some noise in the SEC.

IMO, he should get out of the state and go to Ohio State and take Sullinger’s slot.

I’m hoping you Dawgs are able to get him. I agree with Kentucky fan, that it’s healthy for all of us in the SEC when we have more competitive schools in the conference that just 2-3 every year. Bama is on the rise with Coach Grant, but the conference has pretty much been UK, UF, Vandy to some extent and then everyone else. I’d like to see us be able to send 6-8 teams to the tournament on an annual basis. It would help all of our recruiting with the exception of the Cats. They don’t need any help.

I am a UGA grad living near Memphis. I have met Josh Pastner and John Calipari. There is no comparison. Even when he was here Cal was a sleazebag and a jerk. Pastner might or might not be a great coach but he is a great young man. I am a huge UGA fan but if Tony Parker ever went to a Memphis game it would be hard for him to sign with UGA. Memphis is a basketball school with an NBA arena and UGA cannot compare in hoops. I think it will be hard for Parker to say no to Pastner.

Nothing wrong with the coach blaming his wife for the violation. If she’s like most wives, she is blaming him for everything else that ever goes wrong, up to and including global warming.

As for Parker, why would he choose to go to UGA if he had a chance to go to Duke?

I’m with Jman above. If I was Pastner, I’d have said I was either watching the Spurs, or film of the Spurs PG.
