Tony Parker is in the national news, and not only for his impending college announcement.
The Atlanta schoolboy basketball legend will sign with Duke, UGA, UCLA, Kansas or Ohio State at 4 p.m. Monday at Miller Grove High School.
Parker was in the news on Thursday, for other reasons – actually a pretty funny story that has been picked up by the national media outlets, including Deadspin.
Memphis coach Josh Pastner said he self-reported a secondary NCAA violation after accidentally tweeting the words “Tony Parker” from the basketball team’s official Twitter account.
Pastner claimed he was simply putting Parker’s name in Twitter’s search engines and simply typed it in the wrong space – which is completely understandable.
However, the funny part was the contributing factors behind the Twitter confusion that Pastner explained to the Memphis Commercial-Appeal:
“My wife was yelling at me because I was on the phone too loud. I was waking [the couple's infant daughter] up and waking my wife up because I had the TV on. She was complaining that I not only woke my daughter up, but I also woke the baby inside her up because she’s pregnant.”
Too funny … blaming your wife for an NCAA violation.
One other note on that: I’m still not sure that Pastner actually committed an NCAA violation by simply tweeting the words “Tony parker.” Yes, it is against NCAA rules for coaches to comment on prospective student-athletes. However, in that same rule, it is also clearly permissible for coaches to publicly confirm that they are recruiting a player. That’s another topic for another day …
Back to Tony Parker: If you type his name in correct space on the Google or Twitter search engines, you will see that there are plenty of rumors circulating about the 6-foot-9, 280-pound power forward – which is very common for a player of his magnitude. One of the rumors is that Parker may try to sneak in another visit to UGA before Monday, since it’s so close in proximity.
“I’m not aware of that but I really don’t know enough to make a comment on that at this point,” Miller Grove coach Sharman White told the AJC on Thursday. “I’m there with Tony but I’m not at his home.
“Right now, [the recruiting process] is really between him and his family. They’re getting down to the nitty gritty. Tony is trying to figure out his clear choice, or either making sure he’s comfortable with whatever school he’s thinking about signing with. We’ll find out on Monday.”
