Mark Richt on UGA’s hot recruiting start: “It’s a good thing”

Mark Richt

UGA's Mark Richt gives the congratulatory "commitment hug" in this picture tweeted by Sandy Creek WR Demarre Kitt

UGA coach Mark Richt is excited about the team’s blistering start in recruiting for the next two years.

At Saturday’s G-Day game, the Bulldogs added two more commitments:

Overall, UGA, which signed 19 recruits last February, already had 18 prospects committed for the next two seasons.

After the G-Day game, Richt couldn’t talk about any specific commitments due to NCAA rules. But he was obviously happy with the overall early results of recruiting.

“I know, I think it’s a good thing  — there’s a lot of people really interested in the Dawgs,” Richt told the AJC with a big smile.

“There are a lot of good players, and we’ve been doing a good job of evaluating and getting offers to them. And the guys are responding, and I’m excited for it.”

Within the last two weeks, the commitments have come in bunches. UGA had three commit in one day once, and two in a day twice.

“All that can roll together,” Richt said. “Sometimes you just gain momentum, guys start getting excited and they start talking. Before you know, they are recruiting each other.”

UGA’s recruiting efforts have been boosted by the efforts of a few commitments – safety Tray Matthews, cornerback Shaq Wiggins and quarterback Brice Ramsey – who are actively recruiting other targets over Twitter and Facebook, and with text messages.

Unlike last year, UGA also hasn’t been hampered by “hot seat” rumors and rampant speculation on Richt’s coaching future. “Yes, that helps,” Richt said.

What’s next for UGA? They are looking for a few good offensive linemen. Camden County’s JP Vonashek is still considering committing to the Bulldogs; North Gwinnett’s DeVondre Seymour, the son of NFL All-Pro Richard Seymour, is also high on UGA but is not ready to make his college decision yet.

There were rumors that Kell cornerback Brendan Langley, who has Alabama and UGA as his frontrunners, was considering committing at G-Day. Langley met with Richt after the scrimmage, and was hugged by several UGA assistants as he exited the locker room. However, Langley told the AJC he did not commit.

With all of the off-field issues, has anyone asked Coach Richt if they’ve altered the decision-making process concerning which recruits they will target (and how they mark prospects off of their list)? … Just curious…..

It will now be a blessing in disguise that Georgia only sign 19 recruits for 2012. As many as 7 or 8 of this years recruits have decided to enroll early and start school January 2013 and all will count on 2012 recruit list. That means Georgia can sign a total of 33 recruits on February 1 2013. That enables CMR to not be so selective as to what recruits get offers and we are seeing the results. If this group turns out to be a great group as far as playing skills and academic the philosophy concerning recruiting at Georgia will change forever. The old mind set certainly didn’t work. CMR has been able to have top ten recruiting classes for the last 10 years and if each one of those were graded as to their ranking after 2 years at Georgia none would still be in the top 50 classes because Georgia has had so many of their 4 and 5 star recruits leave or fail or get dismissed from the team. It does no good to have a top ten class if half of that class will be gone within 2 years.

@7576DAWG Top Ten recruiting classes according to who?
Can you say OVERRATED? I agree 100% you cannot lose your so-called 4 or 5 star recruits for any reason. I think that is where the Dawgs Coaching staff fails. I am looking forward to a change. I cannot hang my hat on top recruiting classes that accomplish nothing.

I believe all the hype over recruiting makes Dawg fans forget about regular season losses. UGA had a favorable record last with the easiest strength of schedule. What happens when the Dawgs have to play the top schools again?

What’s your policy towards posters whose sole intent is to trash a blog. This weekend was the worst. I guess a group of kids under multiple names, ran most of the real bloggers away. This happened on several different sites. The one thing they had in comon was ab strong anti-Ga.-Murray-CMR/BOBO bias. There were a lot of new posters with dawg in their name, that hi-jacked all of Sundays articles. Not one had anything positive to say about the G-day game. Ga. Fans were just ridiculed and soon left most all the sites to the blog-thugs. One guy came in under 4 different names in less than 10 minutes making fun of fans, and bragged about it. Yesterday was Black-Blog Sunday…

How can that many of the recruits in the state of Georgia even get in a college? I fear many are just passed because they play a sport. It is becoming obvious the state of Georgia can’t educated anybody. The Teachers cheat on the tests and the kids just drop out. I would bet 70-80% of the Athlete Students don’t deserve to be taking up a seat in a college class. “Cheating our Children
A nationwide look at the integrity of standardized testing by our schools” is eye opening & this article is what we knew http://www.ajc.com/news/painful-truth-in-grad-1416923.html Recruiting a kid from Georgia is anybody’s guess if he can even really READ.

Even though we have had a lot of shipwrecks with players they are the problem and not Richt. Richt is a man of proven integrity and a very good influence and example for young men. Really good start for UGA – 15 commits with 5 of them being four stars.

Correction please

April 16th, 2012
9:02 am

When has UGA won a recruiting NC? Usually top ten, maybe top five, but not #1. Think Bama has won 4 February NCs under Saban, and that has translated into 2 real NCs. Strong correlation between the type of recruiting Saban does and NCs. Hope the Dogs can crack the top three in the recruiting wars this year- chances of an SEC title go up. Also a strong correlation between elite 5* players and championships. Who has had more 5* over last few years than Bama and LSU? No one in SEC.

To Sopwith Camel: I think the record shows that the Dogs lose about 5% of players who commit to them, so I am not too concerned as a Georgia fan about losing commits except as an isolated case.

” A good job evaluating”. I tell you, Richt is certifiable. The guy doing a “good job evaluating” is your former offensive line coach Stacy Searels, who has brought in 6, count ‘em, 6, 4-star stud athletes to play offensive line at Texas. Y’all would have led an ABSOLUTE REVOLT if he’d tried this at Georgia. I’m sure all 6, when evaluated by Bobo and Joe T., would be considered “lazy” (wink, wink), and that this, “It’s easier to just go along with” Head Coach of yours would ,as usual, yield to these rubes. I’m sure Bobo and his Chewtobacco buddy, Will Friend, have evaluated Shamire Devine in the same manner. That’s Richt’s definition of “a good job evaluating.” “Let’s get these private school kids in here and let Joe T. bulk ‘em up.” “That’ll show ‘em!” “We’re way ahead of the curve on this one boys!” I honestly don’t think Uga will win another National Title in this century, and it’s primarily because of former UGA players like Bobo and Tereshinski, who have absolutely no business being in the positions they’re in. TOGEHER with a fan base as biased as you people are. Richt is such a sell out.

@NoGaGator… rivals is garbage. They do not evaluate players nearly as well. Check out 247 and espn much more respectable sites when it comes to evaluating talent. Rivals used to be up there but they have really fallen behind these other sites. Rivals rankings are mostly based on what schools have offered rather than the talent of the actual kid.

Bobo would have come under such criticism if the kid played in a similar league in Georgia that he and his red neck buddy, Friend, had to go out of Stste. So they could get the type of “NON LAZY” player that Booboo, Joe T. Friend, and MOST IMPORTANTLY. you people, just loooove sooo much. Pyke would have been a 1/2 star in Georgia, That’s why Bobo went out of state. It accomplishes two things: It gets Bobo the kind of player he justs covets AND, because he’s from out of state, and not subject to an in-state evaluation, you fools will think he’s a player. What a bunch of morons.Bobo, Friend and Tereshinski can’t help themselves. They are who they are. The fact that this stuff is going on with Richt’s blessing should be troubling to fair-minded people,

Linemen a lot of the time excel in high school because they are twice as big as most of the team. They more get in the way of the other teams players. How do you move 300 lbs of fat. A few will actually develop coordination with their body, feet and hands enough while they are in high school to know how good they will be in college but most never developed any coordination or speed as they were growing up. For me it would be the hardest position to evaluate. Once you get them to college it will take a few years for them to replace all that fat with muscle and for them to develop coordination enough to dominate. Look at all the things that have to be developed after they get to college. Speed, hand and feet coordination, strength, and confidence that they are just as important as the skill positions that have always gotten all the credit over the years. Most of the other positions have all those things already down, years before they even get out of high school. To get a 5- star rating as a linemen is pretty special. I am mainly talking about tackles , guards, and center. Defensive ends develop faster because they are just linebacker who kept on growing.
Good luck to all of Georgia’s big men and work hard because we need you.

I am willing to let the readers decide. Tide roll used that word earlier, so let’s examine his record.

1.Has anyone made a more fantastic statement than tide roll when months ago he claimed Saban was late recruiting Cam Newton in 2010 because Nick thought Cam was a lock to UGA? To think that a detail-oriented coach like Saban would think that is certifiably delusional.

2. We all know tide roll is not a hypocrite, so let’s be charitable and just say he is not very knowledgeable about Bama’s players. Obviously did not know that their top OL was from a private Christian school. Also did not know that last year’s OL at Bama had more whites than UGA’s. (And this is something that is very, very important to tide roll, more so than playing the best players. I am sure Saban ranks talent above skin color when making his lineups.)

3. All the recruiting experts, college coaches, and talent evaluators think John Theus was one of the best, if not THE best offensive tackles coming out of high school last year. Yet tide roll has already judged him to be a flop. Let’s see- who to believe- all the SEC/ACC coaches that tried to sign him, or tide roll? That is tough choice, but I will go with Saban, Miles, Kelly, Richt, Spurrier, Chizik, etc. over a poster that is not real familiar with his supposedly favorite team’s roster makeup.

Some think the huge Juco Trenton Brown will also be coming aboard. As mentioned earlier, the problem this year is a good one to have, as the state is absolutely stacked with quality offensive linemen, so much so that the Dogs will have to pass on some good ones.

Yea there maybe we have lot 3* stars but lot times those under the radar end up being great but we do have several 4 stars player and at least one 5 star in Derrick Henry bottom line star ratings really don’t matter its the there performance on the field that counts what we are doing is trying to build our class up add depth we will probably add some big names like M. Adams and Brendon Langley more commits to come this class will huge .

Some of these recruits will move up in rankings. A few have not been followed very close but will now that Georgia has recruited them and they will end up 4 or 5 star. With the recruits that have already committed and the ones that will still be committing this is a better class than is on paper right now.

Ryan et al …. Saban gets a lot of 3 star recruits, and as soon as they announce the recruitniks take another look and, bingo, they get another star, sometimes two. Is that favoritism? Or do they know Saban sees talent before anyone else? They also know the kids will get better once they are on campus.

Good luck with your recruiting. Alabama needs some linemen (both sides) and a stud quarterback in this class.Odds are Saban will find them.

@evil empire Many National media people, coachs and fans thought they were the best team at the end of the season. Actually I think that’s when asked Saban made the commit “In order to get in the BCS Championship game you must win you conference or atleast you division”. Later however he changed his stance on that I think about 4 months ago maybe. Hawaii was the sacrificial lamb. UGA did what everyone expected and gave them a bet down . Just like mighty Alabama did with their sacrificial lamb in the Sugar bowl ( UTAH ). I’m not saying UGA is as good as BAMA but it’s not as far off as you try to make it seem. Winning the MNC takes A LOT of luck. Lets see UF backdoored their way in, BAMA backdoored once and got extremely lucky once, LSU got in once with 2 loses and lucky once then Auburn got locked out when they were undefeated and probly the best team. It takes A LOT of luck. Let me restate I think Saban is a better coach and Bama is a better team but not by a lot.

I’m sure Gamecock fans are extremely happy with the temporary reprieve from a sub .500 record. It must suck to have a worst record than South Dakota, but sub .500 is horrible.
As soon as Spurrier leaves, it’s back to business (losing) as usual.
I mean 5-12 in bowls, brutal, and Spurrier has taken them to 35% of the ones they’ve gotten to.
One bowl victory before this century, and that was 1994.
No SEC Titles.
.506 all time record (sub .500 before Spurrier)
1 conferece title – ACC, when Richard Nixon was President
16-46-2 against UGA and 40-65-4 against Clemson.
Thanks again for the laughs South Carolina.

[...] Georgia is off to a hot start in recruiting for 2013, and Mark Richt says it’s a good thing. Obviously when you can get commitments from several target players early in the game, it always makes it easier to target bigger players on the board down the stretch. You see this with Florida right now, and Texas has done it forever. If you can get several commitments early in the year, you can close stronger down the stretch, arguably. And you can get a head start to the 2014 class. Right now, Georgia has 14 players committed for 2013…a hot start indeed. [AJC] [...]

You haven’t earned the right to spew your poor try at insults at UGA, or for that fact, any other decent program in the country. I realize being second rate stings quite a bit, but as sad as your team is, you need to be on their blog to encourage them, not on the UGA blogs, trying with words, what your team can not accomplish on the field almost any year, and that is beat UGA. icedawg.. almost all of Georgia’s commits are rated 4 stars or better by either Rivals or 247 sports, two of the three major sites that focus on southeast recruiting. Both have the others as high threes with the exception of Johnny ONeal. ONeal is the #3 ILB nationally by Rivals, but rated the lowest of Georgia’s commits so far by 247. The 247 experts are basing their lower evaluation on his sophomore season (he has excelled as a freshman and junior). I am ecstatic over the players that are committed so far and look forward to seeing Seymour, Kublanow, Vonashek and Langley joining the fold soon. I personally think Rivals is right on target with their eval on O’Neal, but only time will tell. If he has a tremendous senior season look for his 247 status to rocket up. By the way, Bynum would be a 4 star if he were at either Lowdnes or Valdosta High. Very under-rated in my opinion and will be a great lineman at Georgia. Just watch and see!

There is so much volatility. You coach anywhere, for any length of time, and you will have dips…..even Warren Buffet has had bad days……….the longer you stay, the greater the likelihood.

You’re probably a nice guy but if you cannot follow the logic of a contract extension for Mike Bobo, a guy who would probably not be hired for $10K a year at any other SEC school being an incredibly dumb move on McGarity’s part certainly gives you an idea of his decision-making ability. Therefore the same given to Richt is almost as ridiculous. I say “almost” because as bad an HC as I think Richt is he is better at that job (and much better at OC) than Bobo is at OC.

Richt appears devoted to Bobo to the point of the exceptionally poor O performance.. C. Richt gets a contract extension.

Wouldn’t make 10k anywhere else as a football coach? good heavens. That’s your honest appraisal of Mike Bobo. Basically couldn;t even get a job anywhere. Sure.

And I”LL try one last time. I have not asked you why YOU dont want him extended. I asked you why you think HE did. him,. not you. I got what you think about the coaches.

But obviously the AD of a major college program in the SEC disagrees with you. So its either a difference in motivs or expertise. Its really not all this complicated. Which is it? You are way too smart to have nothing more than “he’s just wrong”.
