Mark Richt on UGA’s hot recruiting start: “It’s a good thing”

Mark Richt

UGA's Mark Richt gives the congratulatory "commitment hug" in this picture tweeted by Sandy Creek WR Demarre Kitt

UGA coach Mark Richt is excited about the team’s blistering start in recruiting for the next two years.

At Saturday’s G-Day game, the Bulldogs added two more commitments:

Overall, UGA, which signed 19 recruits last February, already had 18 prospects committed for the next two seasons.

After the G-Day game, Richt couldn’t talk about any specific commitments due to NCAA rules. But he was obviously happy with the overall early results of recruiting.

“I know, I think it’s a good thing  — there’s a lot of people really interested in the Dawgs,” Richt told the AJC with a big smile.

“There are a lot of good players, and we’ve been doing a good job of evaluating and getting offers to them. And the guys are responding, and I’m excited for it.”

Within the last two weeks, the commitments have come in bunches. UGA had three commit in one day once, and two in a day twice.

“All that can roll together,” Richt said. “Sometimes you just gain momentum, guys start getting excited and they start talking. Before you know, they are recruiting each other.”

UGA’s recruiting efforts have been boosted by the efforts of a few commitments – safety Tray Matthews, cornerback Shaq Wiggins and quarterback Brice Ramsey – who are actively recruiting other targets over Twitter and Facebook, and with text messages.

Unlike last year, UGA also hasn’t been hampered by “hot seat” rumors and rampant speculation on Richt’s coaching future. “Yes, that helps,” Richt said.

What’s next for UGA? They are looking for a few good offensive linemen. Camden County’s JP Vonashek is still considering committing to the Bulldogs; North Gwinnett’s DeVondre Seymour, the son of NFL All-Pro Richard Seymour, is also high on UGA but is not ready to make his college decision yet.

There were rumors that Kell cornerback Brendan Langley, who has Alabama and UGA as his frontrunners, was considering committing at G-Day. Langley met with Richt after the scrimmage, and was hugged by several UGA assistants as he exited the locker room. However, Langley told the AJC he did not commit.

With all of the off-field issues, has anyone asked Coach Richt if they’ve altered the decision-making process concerning which recruits they will target (and how they mark prospects off of their list)? … Just curious…..

Hey – one of the best things about being online at 3:30 AM is not having to read the imbecilic, repetitive remarks from people who simply hate Georgia (yet can’t find their own team’s blog to post on……) GO DAWGS!

It will now be a blessing in disguise that Georgia only sign 19 recruits for 2012. As many as 7 or 8 of this years recruits have decided to enroll early and start school January 2013 and all will count on 2012 recruit list. That means Georgia can sign a total of 33 recruits on February 1 2013. That enables CMR to not be so selective as to what recruits get offers and we are seeing the results. If this group turns out to be a great group as far as playing skills and academic the philosophy concerning recruiting at Georgia will change forever. The old mind set certainly didn’t work. CMR has been able to have top ten recruiting classes for the last 10 years and if each one of those were graded as to their ranking after 2 years at Georgia none would still be in the top 50 classes because Georgia has had so many of their 4 and 5 star recruits leave or fail or get dismissed from the team. It does no good to have a top ten class if half of that class will be gone within 2 years.

hey vance duly. must suck to have that 3rd shift job huh? keep at it, maybe you could get a masters at georgia state to help out your career. @7576DAWG Top Ten recruiting classes according to who?
Can you say OVERRATED? I agree 100% you cannot lose your so-called 4 or 5 star recruits for any reason. I think that is where the Dawgs Coaching staff fails. I am looking forward to a change. I cannot hang my hat on top recruiting classes that accomplish nothing.

I believe all the hype over recruiting makes Dawg fans forget about regular season losses. UGA had a favorable record last with the easiest strength of schedule. What happens when the Dawgs have to play the top schools again?

It is a good thing as CMR says… I loved his comments back to SS in regards to Columbia “East” playing us the 2nd week of the season… The D will lead the way next season and with a balanced O we will March thru both Columbia’s with no problem on the way to the ATL…… This is a coach that has it all going the right way at the right time.

As of right now, there are 18 comments on this article, and maybe 4 actually have to do with anything about the story itself. The rest are a mixture of “I hate UGA and am jealous”, and random thoughts about another subject. It sure would be nice to see a few comments from some folks that are a little knowledgeable about football and UGA.

Time to crown Georgia off-season champs once again. The man hasn’t gotten it done in the decade plus that he has been there and won’t in the decade plus that he will stay in Athens. Never seen a fan base that continually talks about upcoming national championships and then accepts mediocrity like Dawg fans.

What’s your policy towards posters whose sole intent is to trash a blog. This weekend was the worst. I guess a group of kids under multiple names, ran most of the real bloggers away. This happened on several different sites. The one thing they had in comon was ab strong anti-Ga.-Murray-CMR/BOBO bias. There were a lot of new posters with dawg in their name, that hi-jacked all of Sundays articles. Not one had anything positive to say about the G-day game. Ga. Fans were just ridiculed and soon left most all the sites to the blog-thugs. One guy came in under 4 different names in less than 10 minutes making fun of fans, and bragged about it. Yesterday was Black-Blog Sunday…

It sure would make me feel better if we hit on a “cluster” of BIG UGLIES. I think we have enough DBs unless a 5* pops up. Coach Richt does not need to wait until the last minute on OLs like last year. If they decide to go somewhere else then we will be screwed big time and I will blame it directly on CMR AND CRG…

How can that many of the recruits in the state of Georgia even get in a college? I fear many are just passed because they play a sport. It is becoming obvious the state of Georgia can’t educated anybody. The Teachers cheat on the tests and the kids just drop out. I would bet 70-80% of the Athlete Students don’t deserve to be taking up a seat in a college class. “Cheating our Children
A nationwide look at the integrity of standardized testing by our schools” is eye opening & this article is what we knew http://www.ajc.com/news/painful-truth-in-grad-1416923.html Recruiting a kid from Georgia is anybody’s guess if he can even really READ.

Even though we have had a lot of shipwrecks with players they are the problem and not Richt. Richt is a man of proven integrity and a very good influence and example for young men. With that many young men coming through the program there will be a few who will sadly find a way to wreck. Having a stable coach of high character is a drawing card for young men. Go Dawgs.

Really good start for UGA – 15 commits with 5 of them being four stars.

Correction please

April 16th, 2012
9:02 am

When has UGA won a recruiting NC? Usually top ten, maybe top five, but not #1. Think Bama has won 4 February NCs under Saban, and that has translated into 2 real NCs. Strong correlation between the type of recruiting Saban does and NCs. Hope the Dogs can crack the top three in the recruiting wars this year- chances of an SEC title go up. Also a strong correlation between elite 5* players and championships. Who has had more 5* over last few years than Bama and LSU? No one in SEC.

To Sopwith Camel: I think the record shows that the Dogs lose about 5% of players who commit to them, so I am not too concerned as a Georgia fan about losing commits except as an isolated case.

It took Gene Chizik two season’s to win a National Championship at Auburn …..

It took Nick Saban three season’s to win One National Championship at Alabama and 5 season’s to win TWO National Championship’s …..

It took Les Miles three season’s to win One National Championship at LSU

It took Nick Saban four season’s to win One National Championship at LSU

It took Urban Meyer two season’s to win One National Championship at Florida and four years to win TWO National Championship’s

It took Steve Spurrier six season’s to win One National Championship at Florida

How many year’s has Richt been at UGA and how many National Championship’s does he have at UGA?

Recruiting has never been the problem at UGA, it’s always been coaching.

@1 4 GT if you under sign or have kids early enroll then they count againest the current year. UGA under signed so they are afforded the opprotunity to sign over the 25 limit if that makes sense. Just don’t let Bama do it because then it is wrong but UGA does it and it is justified. So now folks on here understand the rule because UGA is is doing it.
