Bobby Petrino: How Arkansas firing will affect recruiting vs. SEC rivals

Ole Miss and Missouri are two SEC football programs that often go head-to-head with Arkansas on the recruiting trail.

Coaches from both schools aren’t sure how Bobby Petrino’s firing will impact the competition with Arkansas for future recruits.

“I think it’s too early to tell,” Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze told the AJC. “I think Arkansas has had some tremendous years recruiting and they have great facilities. I’m not confident enough to say we have a great advantage now. Now I think it could be an advantage but certainly they could go get another great coach in there, which I’m sure they will. Then [Petrino’s firing] would be over in the minds of recruits very fast … so it’s kind of hard for me to say on that.”

Missouri’s Gary Pinkel said, “I haven’t thought about how it will affect our recruiting. I think a lot of people recruit against Arkansas, not just us. I don’t know a lot about the whole thing over there, so we’re just going to continue to do what we do.”

Neither coach had the opportunity to match wits with Petrino in SEC play. Freeze is about to begin his first year at Ole Miss, while Missouri is about to begin its first year in the SEC.

“I hate [Petrino’s dismissal] for all involved … Coach Petrino and his family, the Arkansas family, the coaches and the players – that can’t be a fun thing that any of them are going through,” Freeze said. “You just hate it for all involved. None of us are perfect. We make mistakes. You hope in life that your mistakes are minimized and that they don’t cause damage to you, your family and your career.

“I’ve learned a long time ago, I don’t pass judgment on people. You don’t walk in their shoes and know all the details but we hurt for all those involved.”

Said Pinkel, “Well, it’s obviously a difficult situation, and I really don’t have more to say.”

With the kind of money Arkansas was paying Petrino and them being able to get out of his contract without paying a lot of money, it’s obvious that Arkansas is serious about about competing for the West championship and therefore will be able to find a great replacement. The new head coach will take a few years to get his people in place so Arkansas won’t be as good for a few years but in a few years they will be a hand full again.

If what he did to Louisville and the Falcons wasn’t enough…it’s hard to believe parents would actually feel good about having a coach like this for their kids.

Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, next time more intelligently. Arkansas needs to be really careful and vet their next head coach well. This is a PR disaster everywhere except in Hawg nation. SOOOOOOOOOOOOIIIEEEEEE.

Well, I have to admit…that Coach Freeze that Ole Miss got sure sounds like a classy guy.

Contrast and compare the character of two men – one about 32 yrs old, and the other, 51 yrs old. Bubba Watson and Bobby Petrino. Saw Bubba on Charley Rose last night and was inspired to be a better man. And I’m 67 yrs old.

I have to agree with AtlDawg – Freeze came over as a good guy. I don’t remember how well he came over in The Blind Side.

Dostoyevskiy, I agree. I also recently saw a clip on UNC’s Tyler Zeller, THE Academic All American for 2012 men’s BB. Now that is also a kid that not many programs can boast of having one like him. He is AA morally, athletically, and academically. And he doesn’t run his mouth and seek “showcase his talents”. What ever happened to modesty?

Hate it for his wife and kids..they will have to live with it the rest of their life. As for the DA himself..he got what he deserved and I hope the girl does too.

Mountain Dawg– The same could be said for your comment.

I agree with Stang…the family are the ones that are hurt the most. I don’t feel too bad for Univ. of Ark. anyway…they knew what they were getting into when they hired Pig Face. The Arkansas players pretty much got the shaft too…especially their QB. Looks like a 2-team race in the West.

1eyedjack……if you don’t believe that the folks in Arkansas believe this is not a PR disaster you are delusional. The vast majority of their fans are really ticked off at BP. They are not a whole lot different than Georgia folks who think BP is a scum bag!
Values don’t change much from one Southern state to another!!!

BP has some real issues, starting with talking to the Auburn Mafia while they still had a coach. Then the Falcons. Now this. Compare the life, thoughts, actions, intentions of Bobby compared to our Mark Richt. And yes, he’s a good coach, but a lousy man. Yes, i wish Georgia could win a NC, but at the end of the day, headlines like this will never be in the Athens Banner Herald
