Reuben Foster: How will transfer of 5-star LB affect UGA’s chances of flipping Alabama commit?

5-star LB Reuben Foster, pictured with his 3-year-old daughter, has transferred from Georgia to Alabama for his senior year of high school (AJC)

UGA’s chances of flipping the commitment of the No. 2 college football prospect in the nation may have lessened on Wednesday.

Reuben Foster, the 5-star linebacker who is committed to Alabama but still flirting with UGA and Auburn, confirmed to the AJC that he is transferring to Auburn (Ala.) High School and could begin classes as early as Thursday.

Foster has played the last three seasons at Troup High School and decided to transfer after his coach, Charles Flowers, was fired in February apparently over the improper transfer of a player into the school district.

“I needed to get away from Troup, with all the stuff going on there,” Foster said. “There were all kinds of emotions going on about the situation … I feel bad about leaving. But at the same time, it was the best thing to do. I’ve got to do what is best for me.”

Foster, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 2 prospect by Scout, Rivals and 247sports, said his transfer got the blessing of Alabama’s coaches. “They just told me to do what was best for me and my family,” he said.

Foster, who said he moved to Alabama with his mother, is close friends with several UGA commitments, including Newnan safety Tray Matthews and Sandy Creek cornerback Shaq Wiggins. Some UGA fans were hoping that Foster would consider transferring to the same high school as a Bulldogs recruit, and that would help convince Foster to change his mind.

While Foster’s transfer may have hurt UGA, it may have helped Auburn. Foster will be playing on the same high school team as the sons of Auburn assistants Trooper Taylor and Curtis Luper.

“People think because I’m going to Auburn High School that I’m going to Auburn University,” Foster said. “But I’m committed to Alabama, so nobody has to worry about that.”

Foster said another one of his Troup teammates who is also upset over the firing, defensive end Joe Sanders, may also be transferring to Auburn High School. The 6-5, 260-pound Sanders claims an early offer from Tennessee.

What about this weekend? Will Foster be going to the spring game at Alabama, UGA or anywhere else? “No sir. I’m going to prom.”

Let the young man go where he wants. He did not like the fact that his coach was fired.
And he decided if he has to play at another school he wants to play with his friends.

If he want to go to Bama, or UGA, or Auburn, he will make that choice.
If he flips he flips. If he does not…there are other linebackers.

Just an observation, but it seems that there are a lot of people attacking a decision made by a kid. From the outside, it appears that there are people posing as Georgians/UGA fans saying negative things about someone who is trying to make it in life. Honestly, this happens in between USC and Clemson as well… someone poses as a fan to make “his/her” school look bad. We don’t have a shot at this kid, so I’ll just say it… I think most of the negative comments are coming from Alabama posers trying to make UGA fans look bad. I don’t care much for UGA fans but I will say that it wouldn’t suprise me that Alabama fans would do such a thing.

Do you realize that Auburn High School is 38 miles from Troup High School. That is a 35 minute drive. 50% of students in the greater Atlanta area spend that much time in traffic. The Foster family is not your average poor family. They are middle class and do pretty well.

I assume this means his mother was willing to quit her job and move to a new location because her son’s high school football coach was fired, ironically for the improper transfer of a student. And now he is enrolling in another high school, uprooting his family (including his three year old daughter), and preparing to start the last year of grade school in a different location. Sounds to me like an overreaction to a situation that really isn’t a major deal. But I guess he is already getting accustomed to having things the way he wants it to be.

Coach, fired amidst accusation of paying players to move into his school system, takes a job at Auburn High School. I seriously doubt Foster is going anywhere but Auburn and feel pretty certain Coach Flowers will be induced in every way to effectuate that switch. Why would *U operate any differently? A person Smart. Really? I mean you are kidding me right? The question you should be asking is, what 14 year old boy ain’t thinking about sex? Don’t know what world you live in, but I live in the real world and I can tell you for a fact that 99 and 9/10 % of 14 year old boys think about sex. Not sure how many girls do, but obviously a great many of them think about it also. If you have kids, especially teenagers, then you are in for one He!! of a rude awaking if you don’t think that they don’t think about sex. In other word’s. The kid is normal.

I would advise Mark Richt to forget about this kid. He ain’t moving to Alabama for nothing. Most likely Nick Saban personally picked out the school for him to attend. Better to go after kids that want to come to your school than to waste time on a kid who has no intention of signing with you and this kid just made it about as plain as the nose on your face, he ain’t coming to Georgia.

Crimson Crush,

I think the point GtDawg was making above is that everybody overhypes the idea that Bama has garnered a commitment and thus “cherry picked a top recruit from the state of Georgia out of UGA’s backyard” when in fact Foster is originally from Alabama.

Also, Troup County, while in the state of Georgia, is a stone’s throw from the GA-AL line. It’s much closer to Auburn than it is Athens. The distance to Tuscaloosa from there isn’t much farther than the distance from Athens.

I’m pretty sure he was sarcastically saying that if Foster were to sign w/UGA, then UGA would be “cherry picking the top player from the state of Alabama right out of Bama and Auburn’s backyard”. He was mocking the same line of thinking that folks used in describing Foster’s decision to commit to Bama while living in the state of Georgia.

Seems like a pretty easy concept to grasp sailed right over your head. Maybe it’s you who should run for congress. LOL

Dro

I love the reactions of some of you UGA fans. You guys love Foster, and want him bad, until you see the writing on the wall, then you turn on him, and call him “classless” (among other names) and suggest cheating is involved. Very predictable.

Ralph

April 12th, 2012
1:24 am

Every school has that element in its “fanbase”. You also have to consider that this is a blog that doesn’t require an actual login so folks can pose as fans of any school they want and try to make a school look bad if that’s what they want to spend their time doing. In other words, I’d suggest taking anything in the comments section here with a massive boulder of salt.

Ralph please … some of these people have posted on AJC … under the same names … for a LONGGGG time . Always the same predictable kind of crap no matter who the recruit is once he says adios . While AJC does provide an opportunity for false flag operations … it simply is not necessary in many cases . Especially when you know the regulars well enough and can count on them to do it for you …

Ralph

April 12th, 2012
2:07 am

Crimson, please…

Again, you missed my point. Just because a poster has “Crimson” or “Dawg” in their handle doesn’t mean they’re actually a fan of that particular school. Plenty of people like to pose as fans of a certain school just to say idiotic things and make that particular school look bad. I’ve seen numerous people on here for a few different schools who I strongly suspect of this. They’re not hard to pick out.

Secondly, even if you assume everyone who posts with “Crimson” or “Dawg” or whatever in their handle is actually of a fan of the school they claim to be, you still have to remember that every fan base has a certain element that isn’t exactly the brightest or the best representation of their group. There are Bama fans, for example, who do the EXACT SAME THING you’re talking about so let’s not pretend it’s exclusive to any individual fan base.

That’s all I’m saying.

Ralph

April 12th, 2012
2:18 am

Crimson,

If you don’t believe my second point above, just think about Harvey Updyke and the Bama guy who teabagged the LSU fan. Do you consider them a fair representation of the Bama fan base? I’m guessing you’d probably answer “no” to that question.

Do you consider the Bama fans who do the exact same thing you’re talking about on this site and others to be a fair representation of the Bama fan base? An individual could find just as many, and quite possibly more, examples of Bama fans doing the exact same thing you’re talking about. Like I said, there’s a certain percentage of every school’s fan base that acts like that so there’s no point in pretending otherwise. If you honestly think Bama is any different, you’re kidding yourself.

Ralph

No one is “missing” what you think is some brilliant observation about the possibility of clowns posing as the fan from one school while being the fan of another . Crimson,

LOL. You’re still missing my point. I won’t waste any more of my time trying to educate you by pointing out what should be VERY OBVIOUS points since you can’t seem to grasp them.

By all means, carry on. The more intelligent fans will continue to avoid and ignore the comments section on these blogs. You’ve just proven my point about how it’s impossible to have an honest intelligent discussion here without it devolving into trash talk. All I did was make a couple VERY BASIC points without saying anything at all derogatory about you or Bama and the best you can do is talk trash that actually winds up proving my point for me. LOL. I’ve got better things to do with my time than attempt to have a thoughtful discussion with someone who, based on your replies, is apparently incapable of doing so.

If talking trash to folks without even attempting to have an honest and intelligent conversation is your idea of time well spent, I guess you’ve got a lot more free time than I do and fewer options for entertainment. To each his own, I guess.

Addendum … reading your second post about Harvey Updyke … do I think he represents Alabama ? No … but I dont run from it or freak out either when others try to pretend he does .

Personally poisoning the Barners trees was dumb … because the Barners had already posted in their alumni magazine they were possibly going to die in 5 years … in 2007 . It gave them a whiny azz poor pitiful me easy out from the $Cam KNewton scandal . Tea bagging ? Hell … that is a San Francisco treat … it is Not like THAT started in Bama . So neither one of those examples apply personally to my thinking .

I will say … I see you are trying to make a valid point . People exaggerate … blow thing out of proprotion . Make things seem what they are not .

In this case … forget it . Stay here six more years if you like . If the format stays the same … the post will stay the same . And they will come for generally the same type of people . There WILL be Jawja fans … a majority … on these forums at least … who post exactly like a Tea Bagging Harvey Updyke .

I haven’t arrived late to the AJC forums and all. I’ve skimmed bits of the comments from time to time for years–probably before you even started posting. I just usually don’t bother posting for the reasons I’ve already detailed.

I’m aware that some folks take the comments section seriously. That’s EXACTLY what my previous posts were about—why people shouldn’t take them seriously or draw any conclusions from them or even bother reading them or replying at all. All fan bases have a certain percentage of trash talking idiots, Bama & UGA included so there’s no reason for you or anyone else to act like that’s not the case. That’s all I was saying.

I don’t doubt that some recruits may read the comments not just here but on blogs in the Alabama papers and other places across the country and see the exact same types of comments. I’m sure it’s happened more than once. That, again, is why I see no point in even having the comments section underneath articles. It’s overrun by the trash talking types so there’s no point for anyone other than the trash talking types to participate in them. The only reason the comments section is there is because it generates pageviews and ultimately revenue for the site hosting them, in this case the AJC. If it was truly about fostering a legitimate discussion, it would be monitored more closely and set up differently.

I don’t presume myself to be a “great a powerful intellect”, but I thank you for the compliment. I thought I was making VERY SIMPLE and BASIC points that shouldn’t really even need mentioning, but obviously did based on the posts here, some from yourself.

I would hope any recruit reading blogs, message boards and the like would understand what those things are about and how to interpret what they read there, but from the looks of it, many adults have trouble with that very thing too. I’d imagine most recruits are smart enough to take the comments from those types of venues with a huge boulder of salt and not take them seriously.

AJC is a nexus Ralph … like it or not . I would educate you on that … but why bother ? No need to help the enemy .

The point is you TRIED to pretend that recruits should not pay attention to the fact that they get slammedon the AJC blogs by the same people who would praise them , You TRIED to pretend it was ’someone else” . If you have been here long enough to know better it is a LIE . If you haven’t been here long enough to know better … it is an erroneous falsehood . Either way … you aren’t trying to have an “honest” anything . What you are trying to do is cover up for the obvious intellectual shortcomings of your brethren

With that, I’m signing off.

Crimson,

Your 3:46 post is all you got out of what I’ve said tonight?

Holy cow! LOL. It looks like you’re EXACTLY the type of person I was talking about. I thought for a second that maybe you were capable of having an intelligent discussion, but man was I wrong! No matter how hard I try, you still resort to trash talking.

I wasn’t trying to cover up anything. I just made a VERY BASIC point that should be understood without me even bringing it up. I think that’s clear to anyone with at least a semi-functional brain that doesn’t enter the conversation with a completely locked in bias. If anyone is trying to cover anything up, it’s you. You won’t even acknowledge the VERY BASIC fact that I pointed out because you don’t want to admit the obvious intellectual shortcomings of your brethren or acknowledge that every fan base has its share of trash talking buffoons.

Like I said before, this just isn’t worth my time. If you’d read and comprehended anything I’ve said tonight, you wouldn’t have posted what you just did at 3:46 so I’m not going to repost or restate it again.

This doesn’t have ANYTHING to do with states … or the rest of the puerile Dawg fans … it has to do with who can do what for qho . Young Mr. Foster sees where he can play football … under a REAL coach … and SUCCEED . Honestly … I don’t know WHAT he will do at Bama ,

I do know this . A young man who takes the hard route knows the rewards are great . A young man who wants to go to UGA is looking for an out . I commend young Mr. Foster – to have a chance at the title for illegitimate kids with multiple baby makers (currently owned by Calvin Murphy with 14 kids by 9 baby makers), it’s necessary to start early but he can’t slow down. He needs to pick things up on prom night and then keep it going at Auburn HS. If can produce 2 more kids before freshman year at Alabama and 3 more while there assuming he leaves early for the league, he’ll only need 9 more to reach 15 – you can do it!!!

As an entrepreneur by heart, how about this for a business idea in Troup County: Daycare for Prom Night?

He committed to Alabama while he was living in Georgia and has a lot of relatives in Alabama, so our chances haven’t been helped or hurt by wherever he plays high school for his senior year. he is a good LB for sure, but there are plenty of LB’s out there and UGA already has 3 verbals from LB’s already. Of more importance to UGA is to get that big DT M. Adams. He is a more realistic goal, along with CB B. Langley for the DAWGS.
I wish him luck in the future, because having a young child and meeting all of the demands of college, are no easy task. I assume somebody in his family will take care of his daughter while he is in school. He should play pro. someday, so that should help secure his daughters as well as his future.

There is only one way to get Foster to flip and that would be for Georgia to go 14-0 and finish in the top 2. With us losing so many starter on defense then he may change his mind. Even if Saban left I think Foster still goes to Alabama after Smart is named coach. His decision was made a few years ago and he would have never committed this early unless Alabama was a sure thing.

Typical response from the holier-than-thou fanbase that attended school on North Ave.

It was probably better for that young man to be having sex at age 14 than it was for that former GT Baseball Player from an Elite Metro Atlanta Area Private School to be getting hooked on black-tar heroin at age 14 that eventually led to his death a few years ago while he was a member of the GT baseball team.

The GNL GT fans like the original poster seem to take pleasure in criticizing young peoples mistakes without realizing that one time they were young too.

Too bad when you were young you weren’t a star athlete that didn’t have babes throwing themselves at you, or else you might have made different choices at that young of an age.

The President from Arky, and Petrino, a $3.5 million per yr. HC seem to have had trouble turning down women so why should a 14- y/o be so “strong” when it comes to something like that.

Typical “geek-nerd-loser” elitist icehole comment from the typical putz that went to school at GT.

Todd Grantham is who GA should be focused on, he is not happy with his pay and is looking for the first opportunity to get his own head coaching job again. You educated Dawg fans need to try and control the “less-sharp knives in the drawer” as much as the Bama and AU fans. Some of the comments are unbelievably ignorant of college football. For those that think Alabama is all “dirt roads and double-wides”, you really SHOULD “get out” more often. (Staying within 50 miles of your birthplace is not good for your own personal growth.) For every kid with discipline/legal problems at Bama, I’ll bet I can match you, and raise you one, at UGA for the last 5 years. UGA is happy with Richt and UA is happy with Saban, so what’s the problem? Let’s just let the kids play football and let the coaches do what they were hired to do.

This place is the UGA spin room for sure much like AL.com is for the auburn folks. Neither spin cycle have much to sell though and it’s documented. Bama is having some issues getting a top QB this year (and last). Nick will not take a commit from any QB that doesn’t come to a Bama camp so he can see the recruit throw! It appears our backup QB Sims is headed out fo town at the end of this school year and will return to Va or VT. I hope Rueben will stick but another issue is Bama signed 5 top notch LB’s last year with 2 5* and 3 4*’s so that will be mentioned time and time again by UGA and Thugs R uz at allbarn. Never know what a kid will do and if Kirby does leave then all bets are off on some of these Georgieee recruits. Bet you guys never heard of a assistant coach from a rival that continued to recruit players from the opposition team even when those players have been on campus for amost two years! Foster was never going to flip to UGA, but with where he just transferred to it would not shock me to see him sign with AU. He is at the same school Trooper’s son attends which will basically give AU unlimited access. RF has a child to take care of, and AU boosters will be more than happy to help him, afterall they just got away with buying a NC, so why should a little rule breaking worry them.

I wish Mr. Foster all the success in the future…All-American, NFL…. HOWEVER, there is a TREMENDOUS difference in a 16-17 year old kid playing HS varsity football and a 19 year old!
The rules are the rules regarding eligibility and thats what we have to deal with…Foster has played well since the 9th grade, but, he was 16 in the 9th grade…not quite the same as 14 year old on the same level. The same scenario is playing out in Florida where 2013 RB Kelvin Taylor, son of UF legend Fred Taylor is or about to be 19. The FHSAA rules allow you to play til 19 years and 9 months. Unintended advantage…Im hearing that RK may be older as well, not sure just rumors…The odd reality in this scenario is that these older kids usually dont play as well in college because the age and physical maturity gap closes fast.. ex, huge difference between 16 and 19 yo while there is not as much difference in 20 and 23yo…I played LB in college and when in was 19 I was a RS freshman…Cant imagine what I would have done against HS age kids at that point…..

@ Steve:

No he did not have the baby when he was in middle school. He HAD the baby’s momma who is actually the person that had the baby. Is that going too fast for you???

You paint RF as the role model for young men everywhere but how many middle schoolers have a child BEFORE they get to HS. What kind of family upbringing does/has he have/had??? He doesn’t have time to work so somebody has been “chipping in” for child support and I feel quite sure we, the taxpayers, have been chipping in.

If he turns 19 before he begins his senior year that indicates for whatever reason he is not going to make the Dean’s list every quarter……….IF………..he makes the grades to get into college.

Maybe he should have been paying attention in class instead of practicing UNSAFE sex so he wouldn’t have had to spend 6-7 years in middle School.

If he isn’t careful/lucky he and his daugher may graduate in the same class!!!!!

I don’t really care if AJC was trying to slam Reuben or not . RF at least got to see what kind of people follow the two main Georgia programs . Trent Richardson had a girl the age of RFs daughter and one younger when he arrived at Bama . Having something more than himself to play for helped keep him focused on what he needed to do .

It has worked out well for Richardson and hopefully it will work out well for Reuben Foster too . He can leave these llamas to chew their cud and babble about some 2020 pie in the sky “dream” team . That definitely puts him ahead of where he was BEFORE he accepted his offer from the Tide …

Boy, these UGA fans never cease to amaze me… The players are a bunch of drunks and drug heads and the fans are a bunch of hypocritical whimps and cry babies… Last night, I watched the replay of the Georgia and Boise State game and the Georgia fans were booing their own team… Now, that is classy… Do you really think that anyone cares about any comment that you make when you boo your own team? Oh, and by the way.. “YOU LOST”!!!!! to Boise State… and you are the only SEC team that they have ever beaten… 35-21… Stop dreaming, get a life and get your weight up, YOU, G, A!!!! ………ROLL TIDE!!!!!!!
