Reuben Foster: How will transfer of 5-star LB affect UGA’s chances of flipping Alabama commit?

UGA’s chances of flipping the commitment of the No. 2 college football prospect in the nation may have lessened on Wednesday.

Reuben Foster, the 5-star linebacker who is committed to Alabama but still flirting with UGA and Auburn, confirmed to the AJC that he is transferring to Auburn (Ala.) High School and could begin classes as early as Thursday.

Foster has played the last three seasons at Troup High School and decided to transfer after his coach, Charles Flowers, was fired in February apparently over the improper transfer of a player into the school district.

“I needed to get away from Troup, with all the stuff going on there,” Foster said. “There were all kinds of emotions going on about the situation … I feel bad about leaving. But at the same time, it was the best thing to do. I’ve got to do what is best for me.”

Foster, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 2 prospect by Scout, Rivals and 247sports, said his transfer got the blessing of Alabama’s coaches. “They just told me to do what was best for me and my family,” he said.

Foster, who said he moved to Alabama with his mother, is close friends with several UGA commitments, including Newnan safety Tray Matthews and Sandy Creek cornerback Shaq Wiggins. Some UGA fans were hoping that Foster would consider transferring to the same high school as a Bulldogs recruit, and that would help convince Foster to change his mind.

While Foster’s transfer may have hurt UGA, it may have helped Auburn. Foster will be playing on the same high school team as the sons of Auburn assistants Trooper Taylor and Curtis Luper.

“People think because I’m going to Auburn High School that I’m going to Auburn University,” Foster said. “But I’m committed to Alabama, so nobody has to worry about that.”

Foster said another one of his Troup teammates who is also upset over the firing, defensive end Joe Sanders, may also be transferring to Auburn High School. The 6-5, 260-pound Sanders claims an early offer from Tennessee.

What about this weekend? Will Foster be going to the spring game at Alabama, UGA or anywhere else? “No sir. I’m going to prom.”

THIS JUST IN …

@Blackoutanyone?… Didn’t you read the article above before you started spewing off at the mouth. Reuben now lives in bama. He lived in bama up until the 8th grade. He spent 3 out of the 18 years of his life in Georgia. The other 15 were spent in georgia. So if he decides to flip that means we would be stealing the best recruit out of alabama in many years.

Foster was never going to flip to UGA, but with where he just transferred to it would not shock me to see him sign with AU. He is at the same school Trooper’s son attends which will basically give AU unlimited access. RF has a child to take care of, and AU boosters will be more than happy to help him, afterall they just got away with buying a NC, so why should a little rule breaking worry them.

I bet Foster ends up at Auburn because with Bama still on probation we might not be willing to get into a bidding war with them until at least July.

My mistake. Our current probation runs through June so we should be in good shape to get the money flowing again in time to secure Foster’s signature over the Barners. That’s how the Tide rolls, baby!

Foster is a Junior in HS.

Great player and all, never really seem him play in person, I pull for LG myself, but seriously….knowing what we know locally about him he isn’t a good fit for UGA, in case you haven’t noticed lately CMR has been seeking better qualified players for 2013…not the usual characters that keep the AJC in business! He’s 19 with a 3 year old? She’s old enough to be his sister and he’s young enough to be her brother. And his mother is probably young enough to be a sibling to both of them. And as for the grandmama? Never mind, you get the picture.

I wish Mr. Foster all the success in the future…All-American, NFL…. HOWEVER, there is a TREMENDOUS difference in a 16-17 year old kid playing HS varsity football and a 19 year old!
The rules are the rules regarding eligibility and thats what we have to deal with…Foster has played well since the 9th grade, but, he was 16 in the 9th grade…not quite the same as 14 year old on the same level. The same scenario is playing out in Florida where 2013 RB Kelvin Taylor, son of UF legend Fred Taylor is or about to be 19. The FHSAA rules allow you to play til 19 years and 9 months. Unintended advantage…Im hearing that RK may be older as well, not sure just rumors…The odd reality in this scenario is that these older kids usually dont play as well in college because the age and physical maturity gap closes fast.. ex, huge difference between 16 and 19 yo while there is not as much difference in 20 and 23yo…I played LB in college and when in was 19 I was a RS freshman…Cant imagine what I would have done against HS age kids at that point…..

Brainiac(Dawg for life/Richt fan for life)

@ Steve:

No he did not have the baby when he was in middle school. He HAD the baby’s momma who is actually the person that had the baby. Is that going too fast for you???

You paint RF as the role model for young men everywhere but how many middle schoolers have a child BEFORE they get to HS. What kind of family upbringing does/has he have/had??? He doesn’t have time to work so somebody has been “chipping in” for child support and I feel quite sure we, the taxpayers, have been chipping in.

If he turns 19 before he begins his senior year that indicates for whatever reason he is not going to make the Dean’s list every quarter……….IF………..he makes the grades to get into college.

Maybe he should have been paying attention in class instead of practicing UNSAFE sex so he wouldn’t have had to spend 6-7 years in middle School.

If he isn’t careful/lucky he and his daugher may graduate in the same class!!!!!

@ Football Coach:

Well said my friend!!!!!!!!!!!

I finished my senior year HS football while I was still 16 and layed out 3 years before taking a scholarship to play for a JC. I too played LB and it was all the difference in the world even in JC. I grew about 1″ and added almost 30 pounds. About 3 concussions later I retired from organized football but I still feel that I could play one series in HS competition.

Come on bloggers. Let’s hear it about my concussions!!!!!!!!

It sure has got all us Bama fans out of the woodwork. You’re right about that blackout. Us Bama fans are able to post on here all hours of the day and night because most Bama fans are inbred toothless jacklegs that can’t even hold a job. We live our lives vicariously through Bama football even though we never even had a pipe dream of getting an education at the school because we have nothing going for us in our pathetic lives. I hate to say it but anyone who has ever passed through the state of Alabama knows it is true.

It is always funny to see people crawl to a college football blog … and then try to slam fans of better programs for their interest and devotion .

Admit it impostor … you would LOVE to have a program you could actually dream about doing something … pretty much anything . Otherwise … you would not be here . You hover and read about these recruits … because YOU have an interest in what they are doing … and where they are going .

Problem is … if they are going to what ever failed program that fuels your envy of Bama … their collegiate career on the team level will more often than not end up like you … bitter and filled with disappointment … spewing at the fans of programs that end up achieving more in a few years than you could ever dream of seeing in your entire programs life time . :-)

@Blackout

I don’t really care if AJC was trying to slam Reuben or not . RF at least got to see what kind of people follow the two main Georgia programs . Trent Richardson had a girl the age of RFs daughter and one younger when he arrived at Bama . Having something more than himself to play for helped keep him focused on what he needed to do .

It has worked out well for Richardson and hopefully it will work out well for Reuben Foster too . He can leave these llamas to chew their cud and babble about some 2020 pie in the sky “dream” team . That definitely puts him ahead of where he was BEFORE he accepted his offer from the Tide …

Reuben is an incredible kid who had a rough start in life, his father is in prison for harming he and his mother. His mother has worked hard to support her children and has done the best she could. He made a mistake at 14, and now has a precious FOUR year old daughter who is his world. For the record, Reuben just turned 18. Its sad that all you fathers of silver spoon wanna be’s are so judgemental and jealous of this amazing young man. Too bad your kids will flunk out of college leaving you with the tuition bill while Reuben will go on to the NFL and change his family’s legacy. Reuben, do whats best for you and your family, we are proud of you!
