WR-DB JJ Green picks UGA … second commit of day for Bulldogs

UGA-bound JJ Green could play offense or defense for the Bulldogs (AJC)

UGA-bound JJ Green could play offense or defense for the Bulldogs (AJC)

Commitments are coming in groups and bunches these days for UGA.

JJ Green, a WR-DB-RB from Camden County High School, committed to UGA on Monday.

The 5-foot-9, 178-pounder also had offers from Georgia Tech, Stanford, Duke and Mississippi State. Green was UGA’s second commitment on Monday, following in the footsteps of LB Reggie Carter, who also pledged to the Bulldogs earlier in the day.

On last Friday, three prospects committed to UGA.

For the year, UGA now has 14 commitments for its 2013 recruiting class and could sign around 30 next February. The SEC has a “soft cap” limit of 25 signees per year but early enrollees do not count against the limit.

More on JJ Green: He’s the teammate of another UGA commit, Camden County QB Brice Ramsey, which played in the favor of the Bulldogs. The two are best of friends.

“I’m happy for JJ and certainly not surprised by his decision with Georgia,” Camden County coach Jeff Herron told the AJC. “I think part of it is Brice going there, because they’ve been close for a lot of years. You know, you like to think a kid doesn’t make a decision on where his buddy is going but I think JJ felt comfortable with Georgia because of Brice.

“And JJ liked Georgia because of the other reasons. They’re doing a great job with recruiting him and he was impressed with everything he saw at Georgia.”

Green is being recruited by the Bulldogs as an “athlete” and could play offense or defense in college – or both. His high school coach compares his athleticism and talent to former AJC player of the year Greg Reid, who now stars at Florida State. Green’s uncle is former Florida Gators star wide receiver Jacquez Green.

“JJ is a phenomenal player,” Herron said. “JJ is one of those kids, ever since we’ve been watching him in rec league or middle school … you go to the game and he’s the kid that stands out. He’s always the dominant player.

“He’s very athletic. He plays equally well on offense and defense, as well as being a huge factor in the kicking game. He’s a good kid. He has been raised right. He’s not going to cause problems and do things he’s not supposed to be doing. He’s a very high quality ‘character kid’ and a high quality player as well.”

Green has a 3.0 GPA and has already met NCAA academic requirements. Check out his video at the bottom.

Dawgs are on a roll. The Green kid is impressive. Watching Brice Ramsey on ESPN at the Horseshoe and he came out of nowhere. He reminds me of Boykin a good bit. I think we got a steal with him. GO DAWGS!!

Prospect: J.J. Green
Hometown: Kingsland, Ga.
High School: Camden County
Position: Cornerback
Size: 5-9/170
Scout Ranking: Not Ranked Yet
Recruiting: Duke offered first and Georgia and Mississippi State offered this week. Expect more offers to come Green’s way. He said after Georgia offered that they were number one for him.Scouting Report: Green is an exceptional athlete and he will likely be utilized all over the field on the next level. He made plays in the secondary, out of the backfield, and on special teams as a junior at Camden County.

Green may be on the shorter side when looking at size, but do not let that fool you. He plays bigger, he is a physical player, and he has football toughness. He does not back down from challenges and he plays with a lot of confidence.

His size could hurt him some against the bigger receivers, but that is something schools have to overlook because of all the other things he brings to the table.

He is a strong tackler, he closes on the ball extremely well, and he is just an explosive athlete. He is not close to 6-feet tall and may not have the longest arms, but he is a football player who can make plays from anywhere at any time.

Sorry, a little slow on the uptake today. Can’t wait to watch those TECH commits roll in. We’re in a battle for several. It’s us or Mars Hill. Going to be a difficult decision, I’m sure.

My son, GTBob, is right. Green is too short and Carter is too hurt. I’m a Georgia fan, but I love Tech even more. If Alabama was like Tech then Georgia is bad except I’m a Georgia fan even if I love Tech. Richt is bad. UGA is dead. I wish I was as smart as my son, but since I’m not I’ll just point out again that Green is short.

What I’d like to see, Kramer, is for Richt, and UGA to take advantage of the big numbers of blue-chippers we have at Athens.

Richt always gets great classes – most criticism comes from the results he gets from all of this talent.

Go Dawgs!

They aren’t worthless at all but something always happens to them when they get to humpville. From 2000 to 2010 UGA was 2nd only to USC and how many championships did the suntanned Helen Hunt Lookalike HC get?

UGA fans always seem to overlook this. I think recruiting is actually more important to them then on the field performance. Their recruiting is basically the same every year and they know they can rely on that to make themselves feel better.

Happy we are getting early verbals. But I’m a little more interested in how the class of 2012 will help us – and those guys are still getting ready for their senior proms. Gurley, Theus, Jordan J and company are needed to give us immediate depth. A guy finishing up his junior year can’t help uga anytime soon. I am excited about the future – but let’s be cautiously optimistic about this and focus on THIS season. We could get back to a BCS game folks!
