Tony Parker: Atlanta schoolboy legend “unlikely” to sign on Wednesday

Tony Parker, the AJC’s Mr. Basketball and one of the nation’s top uncommitted basketball prospects, is unlikely to make his highly-anticipated decision on Wednesday – the first day of the NCAA’s late signing period.

“What I’m getting from his family is that there’s a good chance it won’t be Wednesday,” said Miller Grove High School coach Sharman White.

“I don’t think he’s just quite ready. He’s trying to figure out the last intricate parts of this decision … so he can make the best choice.”

The 6-foot-9, 280-pound power forward has seven finalists: Duke, UGA, Ohio State, Kansas, UCLA, Memphis and Georgetown. Parker, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 21 overall prospect by ESPN, claims no leaders.

Over the weekend, there were rumors that Parker had eliminated Ohio State. Parker “has stopped returning calls from Buckeyes coaches, a sign that OSU is out of the picture,” according to a report in The Columbus Dispatch.

Tony Parker said he will probably visit UGA one more time before announcing his college decision (AJC)

Tony Parker said he will probably visit UGA one more time before announcing his college decision (AJC)

Parker’s coach responded to the report: “I’d say no comment about that. Well, I don’t think that’s correct. I don’t know. I’m not sure about that. They [Ohio State] are calling me so I know there’s some kind of contact.”

What’s next for Parker? He will leave on Wednesday with his coach for The Jordan Brand Classic in Charlotte. White will serve as a coach for Saturday’s all-star game.

Parker may make unofficial visits to a few of his finalists, although his coach did not know specifics. Parker told the AJC last month that he will likely make one more trip to UGA before signing because two of his high school teammates will be playing for the Bulldogs next season.

How much pressure if Parker feeling? “I just think he’s trying to get to a clear place in his mind where he wants to go,” White said. “It’s a really tough position to be in, and I don’t envy him one bit. All things considered, he’s handling it very well and trying to figure out what’s best for him.”

Basketball’s late signing period runs from April 11 to May 16.

@Mightydawg, that would be a surprise pick for many. All I can say is that the longer it draws out, UGA’s chances definitely increase.

Fox should offer sharman white a job on the coaching staff. Would be a great recruiter for the State of Ga. and seems like a pretty good fundamentals guy.

Going to Charlotte? Are these kids on some kind of pro tour?
Living and breathing basketball all year does noone any good.
They’ll be left wondering why they have nothing in life if basketball doesn’t work out.

April 9th…what’s left to decide? Are any of them really going for academic reasons? Don’t be hypocritical. Otherwise, any school would fit nicely.

IF HE SIGNS WITH UGA THEY WILL BE IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT NEXT YEAR AND HIS LEGEND WILL BEGIN. THIS KID COULD HAVE THE SAME IMPACT AT UGA AS WILKINS DID YEARS AGO. ALL THEY NEED IS THE BIG GUY!!!!!!

I would guess in my own order they are Duke, Kansas, UGA, Memphis, Ohio State, Georgetown, UCLA. Duke and Kansas are two of the prestigious programs in college basketball, Memphis has Shaq Goodwin. UGA is the odd one in this story. They have shown some signs of competence even in a dismal season, they are adding two of his team mates and Caldwell-Pope will be a great passing Guard. I would not be surprised to see Fox pull in one of his biggest catches of his career.

Had to guess I’d say Kansas or Duke though.

I think the coach is making a mockery of this situation, by now the kid has to have cut his list down from 7 schools. It wouldn’t surprise me if Old Sharmann is trying to stay in the light a little while longer, after winning the state championship. This only hurts other kids in the long run, some other recruit is waiting for Tony Parker to make a decision to determine if he will be offered. I’d think the coaches would need to know something soon. Also I thought only 1 kid was going to UGA from Millergrove did i miss something, i know Brandon Morris?? Oh well who knows what the he** is going on, I just suggest that the kid make a decision, with Thomas and Sully leaving Kansas and OSU, i like those odds, but don’t count out UGA, they aren’t hanging on this long for nothing, and after Carter picked GT, they need another big name in state recruit.

UGA has some good pieces to compliment Parker’s talent. He could come to UGA and be a home state hero. He will get to the Pros just as quickly at UGA as Duke. At Duke, he will be just one of the guys. At UGA, he could be the next Wilkens.

Carter would no doubt see the floor at UGA and likely often, but what’s not being discussed is that forward (both power and small) is the dawg’s 2 deepest positions going into next season.

i believe fox would love to move dante back to his natural position at the 4 but if parker signs….he’ll likely be starting at the 5, or the dawgs will carry a hybrid 3 forward line-up—-similar to this past season.

@ flip a coin and decide – I’ve never seen a 7 headed coin before, have you?

@ not dealing with geniuses – It’s trolls like you that feed the negativity around some of these kids who actually value college educations, in addition to enjoying the game. This kid has NBA talent and despite the number of non-college grads in the NBA, there are a good number of college grads there.

@YADA – Besides from Brandon Morris leaving MG this year, there is another kid from MG at UGA who played with BM and TP a year or two ago, hence the 2 former teammates playing for UGA next year comment. His name escapes my memory currently.

My son is graduating in the same class from Miller Grove with Tony Parker this year. Although my son is more of a scholar and does not hang in the same circles as TP, they have shared some friendly chess matches. My son says that TP is level headed down to earth guy. No apparent arrogance. I suspect TP is truly attempting to be diligent and play the board; making the move he feels best fits him.

@ Harold:

Have you ever seen UGA’s basketball practice facility and locker rooms? That facility, which the players spend way more time in than Stegeman (which isn’t a terrible building by the way, the upgrades they did last year are fantastic) is second to none, nationally.

That and Fox’s pretty large contract and buyout clause indicate that yes, UGA is definitely committed to basketball.

You must be stuck in the Dooley era.

BOBDAWG….. Dukes program dropping off is news to me my friend. They were upset by LEHIGH so that means our program is dropping? We were 27-7 this year with wins over UNC, Kansas, Michigan state and Florida state. We lost a tourny game without one of our best players in the lineup. How does any of this lead you to believe that we have dropped off? Duke won a national title 2 years ago I don’t get your reasoning at all. With all that said we DEF want this kid he is a great player and we would love to have him. I wouldn’t be upset if he went to UGA though to play with his boys. I have always admired kids who stay home to try to lead their home program to the top but I really hope he comes to DURHAM!!

This whole thing has gotten out of hand. At this point who cares where he goes? Why would he wait so long to pick a school? He’s had 4 years to narrow down his choices and now the day has come to choose and he still wants all the attention. Pick a school and move on with life. Nobody even cares anymore.

@black1, according to your erreneous comments, you don’t know nothing about MG basketball or Mr. Parker.
1. Coach White runs a solid program that has developed kids from freshman year to play at a high level.
2. Parker is raw?? While there is alwyas room for improvement, he can start on any college team in the country. He has a dynamic basketball IQ because he puts in work. Not to mention, he has been a member on the Team USA Junior team since his freshman year.
3. Tony Parker was key in all four of the championships, excluding his sophomore year, where he had a foot injury. Hence, that is when Brandon Morris made a name for himself as a dominant player.
4. Four State Championships, Four Years All-State, 2x Class AAAA Player of the Year, Mr. Georgia, McDonald’s All-American and Jordan Brand Classic All-Star.. Sounds like a cemented legacy to me. Hope that things will just get better because it makes the state look good!

As much as I would like to see Tony Parker come to the Dawgs, I don’t think it will happen. The kids these days want to go to a program that competes for championships and to my dismay we just do do that in Basketball. I think it will be UCLA or Duke. Go Dawgs!

Forget what all the haters say, this is a clear sign that he is seriously considering Georgia. The only other two possibilities are Duke and UCLA. If it were just those two, he would be announcing tomorrow, just like he said before. It would be a simple choice: stay closer to home and play for Coach K or go out west and help pick UCLA up off the floor. So he must at least be considering Georgia for him to be in doubt this late in the game. I bet it’s his mom’s doing…lol.

Tony Parker is a very raw talent and will need to learn footwork, develop a shot from 10-15 feet from the basket, and some fundamentals to excel at the next level. He has no outside shot and will by physically dominated by older/stronger players. Sharman White is a “joke” as a coach. Miller Grove was not successful on the national level against superior talent. Coach White was out coached in every game on ESPN.

Hope that he chooses a school that can coach him up and will stop all of his whining on the court. D! officials will not tolerate his behavior.

Parker is the most over hyped player to come out of Atlanta in quite a while. He played in 2 all star games against top competition and couldn’t run the floor or assert himself. He will not be a program changer for any team but he could be an above average player. If he gets in shape.

To all you doubters out there, I don’t care if Mr. Parker needs work to become a real player as an NBA guy or even a D1 guy. I like his character and he is precisely the type of big man that Coach Fox has helped to polish. I really believe UGA is a good fit for him (for several reasons), and I guarentee you that his signing will go a long way to filling the Steg on a regular basis. Just offer the Parker family great seats and lets tip it off for an exciting new season.
