JP Vonashek: UGA may be on brink of yet another commitment (UPDATED)

UGA could pick up its third 2013 commitment from Camden County High School with OL JP Vonahsek (AJC)

UGA could pick up its third 2013 commitment from Camden County High School with OL JP Vonahsek (AJC)

UGA already has two commits from Camden County High School, and it could add a third. J.P. Vonashek, a 6-foot-6, 270-pound offensive lineman, was offered a football scholarship by the Bulldogs on Monday and briefly considered accepted it. He still may do so, as early as Tuesday. “I feel good about it, and I’m really feeling Georgia,” Vonashek told the AJC. “I’m thinking about committing to them. I told Coach [Mark Richt] that I just want to go home and talk it over with my parents, and then go talk to [UGA offensive line coach Will Friend] tomorrow night about it.” Perhaps that only thing that could make it interesting with Vonashek is if Alabama offers. UGA and Alabama are his two favorite schools, but the Crimson Tide has not offered. Vonashek holds early offers from UGA, Miami and North Carolina. Camden County WR-DB JJ Green committed to UGA on Monday, while Camden County QB Brice Ramsey pledged to the Bulldogs over the summer. Vonashek met with Richt on Monday while touring the UGA campus. “Coach Richt said ‘Did Coach Friend and Coach Bobo say we want to offer you?’ I said ‘No sir.’ He said ‘Good, because that’s my job. I want to offer you a full ride to the University of Georgia. What do you think? Do you want to become a Bulldog?’ I said ‘Thanks so much for the offer. I’m excited about it. I need to talk to my parents and I will let you know.’” Vonashek said UGA appeals to him for many reasons. “I’m planning on enrolling in college next January. They told me they have a lack of depth on the offensive line, and that I could come in there next spring and compete for a starting spot.” Camden County coach Jeff Herron on JP Vonashek:

“If JP Is not a big-time D1 offensive lineman, then I don’t know what one is,” Herron said. “I haven’t seen one that has all the tools he has got. “He’s 6-6, closer to 6-7, and doesn’t hardly have an ounce of fat on him at 270 pounds. He’s going to be huge. That’s the thing. He has not filled out yet. You’re talking about a kid who I think can handle 300 pounds very well. He has got good feet. He’s a tough and physical kid. He has come over here and worked his tail off. “JP has all the intangibles that colleges are looking for. I don’t think he’s finished growing height-wise, either. He has such a tremendous upside. When you get a kid at that size, with that agility … he has long arms and such good work habits … that’s just a rare combination.”

UPDATE, 8:40 p.m. Tuesday: JP Vonashek did not commit on Tuesday night but still may do it by the end of the week. “My parents want me to wait and think about it a couple to make sure it’s the right decision.”

I love seeing the early commitments, but A) what are we doing to be pulling so many so quickly. And B) how trustworthy are early recruits in today’s age of decommiting and flipping?

Congratulations young man. If you want to go to Alabama, go ahead and commit. Maybe Saban will not dump you before your four years are done.

I am trying to figure out how James thinks this hurts Alabama, and ends the mythical monster of “oversigning’s” life?

Ruben Foster is packing his bags and moving over to Gods county in a few short months from now. Maybe he will give Robert Nkemdiche a ride on over as well…

If JP Vonashek commits tomorrow to UGA as some are saying we could add three or four O-linemen that would really help our depth .

The SEC presidents and/or chancellors voted 12-0 to cut that limit of a maximum number of football schoalrships to 25 per season. I’m not sure how the Bulldogs can sign more than that many players unless they plan to come under scholarships for this season where they were under the 25 player limit. However, I believe there is still a maximum number of scholarship players who are permitted to be on a roster at one time (less than 90 if I’m not mistaken), so I’m still not sure how they can sign that many players and be under the max number unless so many players have left the program over the past five years (taking red shirt seasons into account).

It looks like Grantham has backed off of the “gotta have 6 foot tall or taller corners” approach. Who cares if the guy is five foot nothing, if he can play, he can play. I also like the fact that they have hit the ground running in this recruiting cycle. I hope this becomes the norm.

Everyone is committing early because the scolly limits are filling up at their position and they have to make sure that they have a place in the program where they want to play D1 football. Seems like it is happening everywhere. Must be that “bumper crop” everyone was talking about.

UGA can sign up to 25 for next year’s class. They can accept early enrollee’s, which would count against last year’s class. They signed 19 last year, so they could sign up to six early enrollee’s plus 25. The total number a team can have on scholarship is 85.
