Tony Parker: Atlanta schoolboy legend will announce his college choice on …

Place your bets: Duke or the field for TP? (AP)

Atlanta schoolboy legend Tony Parker has tentatively set the date to reveal his highly-anticipated college basketball decision.

“I think April 11,” Parker told the AJC on Monday night.

The 6-foot-9. 280-pound Parker briefly considered announcing at last week’s McDonald’s All-America basketball game but then decide he would rather do it in front of his family and friends at Miller Grove High School.

Parker, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 21 prospect by ESPNU, also considered announcing at the end of this week.

Now it’s shaping up to be April 11, which is significant because it is the first day of the NCAA’s late basketball period. It ends on May 16.

Which colleges are in the Tony Parker sweepstakes? We’ll review them with our opinion. Please note that Tony is a master with his poker face, and very tough to read throughout the recruiting process. In other words, we’re throwing darts.

  • Duke. I’m not going to give any odds but you would have to think that Duke is the school to beat. At least, in Coach K’s mind. Surely, the Duke coach wouldn’t have visited Miller Grove High School last week if he didn’t feel confident. Then again, if Duke was a slam dunk, why didn’t Parker go ahead and sign with them early? Also, Parker has expressed concerns about Duke’s reputation for the development of “bigs.” TP’s pops like Duke.
  • Ohio State. It’s a long way from Atlanta but they’ve always been near the top. Thad Matta was trying to get to Miller Grove last week but he had something else going on – something called the Elite Eight.
  • UGA. Tony Parker to the Bulldogs would be the biggest recruiting upset since … I don’t know, maybe since Dominique Wilkins? As far as big men signing with UGA, maybe forever. The biggest things in the Bulldogs’ favor are proximity to home (Tony loves his parents) and two of his high school teammates will be playing for UGA next season. Parker could literally cement Mark Fox’s future in the coaching business if this miracle happened. UGA is the darkest darkhorse ever. TP’s mom likes UGA.
  • Kansas. The Jayhawks lost serious momentum when assistant coach Danny Manning was hired at Tulsa.
  • Memphis. The biggest appeal seems to be that Tony’s longtime archrival from high school, Southwest DeKalb’s Shaq Goodwin, has already signed with Memphis. A possible “package deal” but unlikely.
  • UCLA. If it wasn’t so far, they might be the leader. Tony’s former AAU coach is an assistant with the Bruins.
  • Georgetown. We don’t even know why they’re on the list. Does Georgetown know it’s on the list?

What’s your prediction? Please post below …

Need points? Adam Smith (UNCW)

Need points? Adam Smith (UNCW)

RELATED: After Tony Parker, the state’s hottest free agent is Adam Smith, the former Parade All-America shooting guard from Fayette County High School who just finished a sensational freshman season at UNC-Wilmington. Smith has requested a release and, on Monday, was granted unrestricted permission by UNCW to talk to other schools, according to the StarNewsOnline. What’s the big deal with Smith? He’s simply the best pure scorer at guard the state has produced since former Kentucky star Jodie Meeks. For reasons I still do not understand, he was vastly overlooked by high D1 schools because of his size (6-foot-1). He also might’ve made a mistake signing early because Smith had a monster senior season, leading Fayette County to the state semifinals while averaging an eye-popping 26.2 points. No disrespect to UGA, Georgia Tech or Georgia State, but I would take Smith over any of the guards each of those schools signed this year. He’s that good. This past season, Smith averaged 13.2 points as a college freshman, including outbursts of 32 points vs. Wake Forest, 23 vs. Maryland and 20 vs. George Mason. Will the high D1 schools miss on Adam the second time around? Doubtful. A couple of laundy items: Smith is transferring because of “a personal [decision] based on his own academic and athletic goals and objectives and not based on any issues associated with the UNCW coaching staff or his teammates,” according to his father; UNCW also requires a student to have a 2.6 GPA or better to transfer, and Smith has a 3.2. He will have to sit out next season under NCAA transfer rules and have three years of college eligibility remaining.

Memphis is much more in there than most people think. The big reason has nothing to do with Shaq Goodwin though. It’s because his girlfriend will be going to college at Ole Miss, which is very close to Memphis. Another reason is because Memphis has one of the best strength coaches in the nation, which is also very big for Parker. Duke is not gong to get him, I can almost guarantee that. They have been falling out of the race for a long time now. They will remain on the list, but wont get him. It will likely be either Memphis or Ohio State, with UGA and Kansas(Seems unlikely now that Manning is leaving) having an outside shot.

Keep dreaming. He may not be coming to my school UGA, but I know he’s not signing with Memphis. That city has one of the highest crime/murder rates in the country, and makes downtown Atlanta look like paradise. I know his parents, and I know they’re not about to send him to a war zone to play for some John Calipari wannbe fast-talking used car salesman like Josh. That might’ve fooled Shaq Goodwin but it won’t work with Tony’s parents. Pastner is a joke for a coach, and is only riding out what Calipari set in motion for him. Memphis is a dump. Tony will sign with Duke.

Indeed, workers lacking high school diplomas saw their unemployment rate jump 6.6 percentage points in June vs. a 2.3 point increase for college grads who has their degree from one of the High Speed Universities

LaVon Mercer and Cedric henderson were two BIG’S who signed with UGA..Mercer being one of the most heavily recruited big men in the state of Georgia’s history.

Do not underestimate Tony Parker’s close relationship and loyalty with his teammates, Brandon Morris and Dontae Williams, and his friend Charles Mann a big time pass first point guard. Coach Fox at Nevada and UGA has sent bigs to the NBA. Plus I will tell you this; if mamma ain’t happy; nobody is happy and momma likes UGA. I would also think that Tony is a little different than most players; he wants to “change a program” forever.

I would love to see him at UGA. I think them and Ohio State would be best for a big guy. Duke doesn’t really play inside, they just shoot and miss and lose to 15 Seeds.

Ohio State and UGA seem possible to me. Very possible.

Georgia basketball, legend: your kidding right?

Georgia has been playing in a 4H Rodeo Barn for over 40 years, Please!

150 days till kick off, who will be on the GA team when this day arrives: Will the QB still be privledge and protected from his off field shenanigans, others have paid the price, will GA hold with the 6 games suspensions for second drug offenses or change to four games, etc. etc.

The only thing in UGA’s favor is does he want to stay home and he has good relationships with Morris and Williams parents could be the key they had a lot of nice things to say about Mark Fox we shall see hear this would be biggest get since Wilkins .

Could be Georgia Tech, they have openings because Rice and Hicks are leaving.
Next best choice would be Georgetown: If he is concerned with Duke because of their development of bigs then Georgetown is the best place to go to develop post game. Thomson III has done a great job developing Henry Sims, Roy Hibbert, Greg Monroe, Jeff Green. All came to Gtwn raw and became impact players

Tana, how old are you, 12? You don’t pay attention to Duke. They do and have played inside; Boozer, Shelden Williams, Zoubek come to mind…this year was anamoly; they won the title 2 years ago….when was the last time UGA won anything in any sport?

I’m not saying Duke gets him, but he’s being fed bad information about Duke development of bigs, Mason Plumlee took a huge step forward from his sophomore year to his junior year; which may lead to the NBA.

Mr. Parker could absolutely be the player that sets Coach Fox’s program into full throttle mode. Coach Fox needs a big man and he can coach. You can go to the NBA from UGA just as easy as you can from Duke or Ohio St. Remember Mr. Parker, you can be a legend in the State of Georgia for the rest of your life if you attend UGA and help Coach Fox turn the program around or you can leave the state and only be remembered for the next 4-5 years. Best of luck wherever you decide to pursue a degree.

@old dawg “Best of luck wherever you decide to pursue a degree.”

he is not pursuing a degree. He is going to training camp for 1 year to get ready for the league.

I watched him in the McDonald’s game. He is not a program changer. He is very out of shape, plays very soft and was completely ineffective with his back to the basket.

ole dawg. . . Totally agree with you. If he signs here, he would become the King of Georgia Basketball regardless of who comes after him. Other big time players will want to play with him as he is probably not one and done. His business opportunities in this state after basketball would be numerous to say the least. I am a Dawg fan and I do not have a problem with Calipari or Coach K. They have created the illusion that they get kids to the NBA. One and one players have the talent to go straight out of high school. None are on campus long enough for the coaching staff to make significant enhancements to their skill level but Coach Cal and others certainly have them thinking that way. Parker would help Fox create that same illusion. I think we will get him. Why has he not already signed with Duke or one of the other bluebloods? I think Coach K has been here so much because he knows Parker is not signed, sealed, and delivered.

April 3rd, 2012

Truth hurts. . . Parker did not have a good McDonald’s game but I think he is good with his back to the basket. I saw several HS games and he can play in the post, needs work but he can play. By the fact that he needs work is why I don’t think he’s one and done but what do I know, I did not think Daniel Orton was one and done either.

When he is ready, he will be a #1 pick at UGA, Duke or where ever he goes. He will put UGA on the map. At Duke (a GREAT school) he will leave just a soon as he would at UGA.

Why not stay at home a be a home state hero? Why not be close to family and friends for the remaining year or two before the NBA?

April 3rd, 2012
2:09 pm

It would be awesome to get him here at UGA – but I don’t think any of us are holding our breath. Fox has had nothing to work with and has managed some upsets over ranked teams and coaches like Donavan and Calapari are extremely complimentary of his coaching skills. One player per recruiting class won’t be the panacea for our barely relevant program, but it would be a start. 2 consecutive NCAA tourney appearances seems to be the next step up before any recruits truly take us seriously.

Coach Mark Fox is one player short — Tony Parker — of making real noise in the NCAAs. With no “bigs” — with due respect to Donte and Nemi — he puts the fear of God in opponents. Why? Player development! If you look at Donte’s progress from Year 1 to this year, you understand why Fox is rated to nation’s #1 coach in player development. Parker will be a stud under Fox’s mentoring and he’s the last piece in the puzzel. Parker will soon become the Big Dawg! Let the Big Dawg eat!!!

Basing your opinion on Parker’s potential based on his performance in the McDonald’s joke of an all star game is a joke. That game is all about guards and wings jacking quick 3’s, not feeding the post. He is a beast. Will make UGA a contender immediately if he comes.

Dawgs all the Way, BaByyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!

[...] Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Tony Parker is a bit of a mystery. Every time it seems like Duke is out of the mix, Mike Krzyzewski will go out of his way to go see Parker and another school will take a step back. This time it’s Kansas moving backwards, as Danny Manning (Parker’s primary recruiter) is going to Tulsa. Thad Matta also missed on an opportunity to go see Parker because he was coaching in the Elite 8. Coach K may be able to overcome Parker’s knock (that Duke struggles to develop big men) by process of elimination and sheer resilience. [...]

Two things.
1) Georgia has signed a McDonald’s All American big several years back. It was a hometown kid, but Carlos Strong was a McD’s A-A and won their dunk contest, before spending 4 years as a PF under Hugh Durham and Tubby Smith.

2) Unless Tony Parker was a part time Celtic, UCLA doesn’t have his former AAU coach. They have an AAU friend of his advisor, Dion Glover, but Tony Parker has played for the Nike-affiliated Georgia Stars. UCLA’s Korey McCray was a part of the adidas-affiliated Atlanta Celtics.

If we good good value for our money, Tony Parker would be announcing soon wearing a hat with a UGA bulldog on it. There’s absolutely no rational excuse why all Georgia talent chooses to go out of state, often to inferior universities.
Wake up, folks. The quality of our coaching staffs are not commensurate with UGA’s stature or the raw athletic talent of our young men and women living in the State of Georgia.
Only when the alumni and fans demand improvements will we see improvement.
Vote with your money. Money talks…
