Georgia DB heads West

Cal-bound DB Shon Atkins

Cal-bound DB Shon Atkins

DB Shon Akins is not sure how Cal first found out about him.

The 5-foot-9, 175-pound defensive back from Norcross High School committed to the Pac 12 school over football scholarship offers from Wake Forest and UConn on Sunday night. Akins said he also had interest from LSU, Georgia Tech, Miami, Missouri and Oklahoma State.

“From what I’ve heard, my dad was putting film out there on me,” Akins told the AJC. “The Cal coaches happened to go over my film and they offered me. They were my first offer. I don’t know how they found my film. My dad said he didn’t send it directly to them … so I don’t know how they got it. But they did. They offered, and I’m glad they did.”

Akins has never been to Cal. He was supposed to visit over spring break but the trip got pushed back to this summer. Nevertheless, Akins said he had gotten to know Cal’s coaches over the telephone well enough to go ahead and commit on Sunday.

“Something told me to go ahead and commit,” Akins said. “They were the first to offer me. They showed me a lot of love and respect. So I decided to go ahead and commit.”

Why Cal? “I just could really see myself playing there, I wanted to go out to the West Coast and see what football is all about out there.”

Akins said he will take visits to other schools but added “I don’t think my decision is going to change.”

Congratulations Shon Akins:

Good job at getting players video out to colleges

Georgia was the first college contacted about Adrian Hubbard ability when he went out for football at Norcross. Not a single GA coach ever showed up at Norcross after they were contacted. Adrian Hubbard is now a big key to Alabama defense in 2012 and future.

Just when you thought you’ve seen everything then you see something else. Commit to the first school that offers you that’s 3000 miles away that you’ve never been to. Must be the liberal dope policy.

GT is getting KILLED in recruiting in this State!!! Everyone is coming in here getting kids they are looking at. GT can’t continue to get kids that only have offers from South Alabama and Furman. CPJ better change some things in a hurry, kids in this state just don’t want to play for him and that system as it is at this time and his STAFF can’t close. Make all the excuses they want to but it just ain’t working.

I can see why the young man would take the offer . While the article mentioned other schools “showing interest” if the information is correct his only firm offers were Wake Forest and U Conn . The other schools might never offer . Cal is an upgrade at least on the football side of the equation and academics (at least for the general student body ) aren’t bad either .

I am not a big fan of the campus politics but then again that would be a separate issue if I were advising this young man .If you ruled out every campus in America that was overrun by left wing idiots and faculty … pickings would be slim indeed for acceptable scholarship offers . Nothing wrong at all for this kid taking what might be his best offer for a free education while playing football and running with it .

Told you guys before, and this is not a diss, CPJ has a small school recruiting mentality. He can’t close with the big boys. From the look at his offers, Cal was the absolute best choice. But I’m pretty sure as the season rolls along, he will get more. But he’s actually in a win-win situation with Cal. They definitely don’t have depth on defense and the education is top notch.

_____________

You’re absolutely wrong (t-i-c)!

All these Recruits that are committing early to places other than GT are simply SCARED of GT’s elite academics; that’s why they’re committing to places like Cal-Berkeley and Vanderbilt (t-i-c).

My father is a GT alum so I grew up as a Yellow Jacket fan (LETHAL WEAPON 3!), but I lived near Cal, and eventually went to Cal. If Shon Atkins doesn’t go to Cal, I hope he goes to Georgia Tech.

You’d be surprised at how apolitical most of Cal is – students tend to appreciate Cal for the academics – but we do have local Berkeley residents who invade the campus from time to time to stir things up. In fact, the city surrounding the campus is often at odds with the school – sit-ins where we wanted to expand our football stadium and athletic facilities, protests against the school as a symbol of the government, etc. But all in all, it’s a pretty typical college experience – beautiful campus, rigorous academics, BCS football, cheap pizza and underage drinking.

He chose the locality, not the school. I would bet before all is done and said. he will be back and on a team closer to home. I think, maybe because he didn’t have many offers, he took the one he thought might be fun, but making a decision based on the fact that they were the first school to offer, when not many have yet, and deciding based on they “showed me a lot of love”, is not exactly the best way to arrive at a decision to spend 4 years of your life. I hope he at least takes a trip out there before he sends in his letter on national signing day.

Way to go Paul Johnson and Staff!!! Another example of total ineptitude— and it’s about to start showing itself on Saturdays.

Our roster has been watered down to the likes of a UConn or Syracuse— no chance whatsoever of competing with The University of Georgia or Miami or FSU.

Paul Johnson will not be on our sidelines in 2014.

LOL at you people making something out of nothing.

Tech has 15 spots for 2013, are you really going to criticize him every time he doesn’t sign one of the 170-180 D1 recruits that sign elsewhere. With all du respect to Mr. Akins, he needed Alvin Kamara to go down to GT with him to try and get an offer. With only 1-2 DB spots to give, he’s so far down our list when the following corners are on our list…

Brandon Facyson
Darius Curry
Jalen Ramsey
Cameron Sutton

Cal has 30+ spots…they can offer a kid like this early…

GA Tech has a very limited number of scholarships available this season and the players who are being recruited seriously are listening to what Paul Johnson is saying before committing. Make all of your visits first and be sure Tech is where you want to be before you commit because we don’t want any guys with doubts. He’s up front and honest with the guys, which they appreciate. Commits will come in due time, they will meet the needs of the team, and they will be loyal to the program.

WnE, not to diss you bro, but you must have been outside of the state of Georgia if you believe “elite” academics at Tech have folks like this young man, who qualified to get in a better academic school, scared. Tech is top notch, but not Vanderbilt and definitely not Berkley. Liberal arts majors make more money in this country. Sorry, but these are the facts. And Berkley engineering isn’t below Tech’s either.

The kid and father are smart for they have locked down a college scholly already. The kid can work on having a big year and if he gets some offers then he can adjust on the fly if needed. UGA will sign about 50 this years so he might get in ob the back of his best buddy! That seems to be a good plan at UGA. It is what it is.

Cal, is a really great school. Berkely is a beautiful little city and the University of California at Berkely is one of the top three state universities for educationalong withthe University of Michigan and the University of Virginia. The PAC 12 is a good conference and he will enjoy the Bay Area. Everyone can’t go to school in the SEC and play football. Young man good luck and make sure you leave with your degree and enjoy the experience. I would hope everyone would respect his decision.

Kid I’d make the trip before I commited anywhere. I’ve been to California and it’s like living in a whole different world than what you experience here in Georgia. I personally liked my stay out there, but it’s a long way from home and the people are different. All I’m saying is look before you leap and if you then decide that’s the place for you then by all mean’s go for it. Any way, best of luck to ya. At least when you say that you want to get away from home you really mean it.

Other than the kid being from Ga. why is this a story and why is GT mentioned? He came for a visit with Kamara about two weeks ago but did not get an offer. From what I heard the coaching staff liked him but have hopes of landing other kids they are working on right now. I could also see him flipping before signing day as Cal is a long way from home. Good luck to the kid either way as he cannot go wrong with a degree from Cal.
In other news I think we will see a commit real soon and and I hear it may be a few announced at the spring game. Come show your support.

People, with Georgia ranking as the top 5 D1 college prospect, UGA and GT can’t recruit all the players. There is a limit. I get tired every time a recruit commit somewhere else people start crying why didn’t UGA or GT recruit or get that player. Oh Lord, you can’t recruit 100 players a year. The State of Georgia is surrounded with States that can’t produce the prospects that Georgia can, so they all come to GA. Atlanta airport is so easily accessible that it makes recruiting metro Atlanta, much easier for schools that don’t have the big recruiting budgets and schools that does also come here to cherry pick. Just like Ga cherry pick players in neighboring states. So get over it.
