Vanderbilt coach James Franklin is trying to build a fence around Georgia.

Taurean Ferguson, a 5-foot-10, 175-pound cornerback from Jonesboro High School, committed to Vanderbilt on Saturday while touring the campus. He picked the Commodores over Ole Miss, Wake Forest and Cincinnati.

“I picked Vanderbilt because I looked at it as four years to set myself up for the next 40 years,” Ferguson told the AJC. “I’m going there for the education and sports.”

Four out of Vanderbilt’s five commitments for its 2013 football recruiting class are from the state of Georgia, including three within the last week. The highest –profile Georgia recruit is Cedar Grove High School’s Johnathon McCrary, the 4-star QB who picked the Commodores over UGA and Alabama.

After Ferguson committed to Vanderbilt, he got the famous “engagement” lecture from Franklin. “He said ‘With you committing, this is like our engagement. When you sign the letter-of-intent next February, then we’ll be married.’ I thought that was really funny how he explained it like that. And it showed me he really cared about me.”

Ferguson was just beginning to emerge on the recruiting radar, with many colleges expected to attend his spring practice  at Jonesboro in May. He also had interest from Auburn, Iowa State, TCU and Florida, among others. Ferguson said he did not have any contact from UGA or Georgia Tech.

Ferguson has a 3.5 GPA and plans to major in Engineering or Technology.

Come play in the ACC, a true, traditional football league.

We DON’T recruit gang members and then kick them off the team for smoking weed and stealing from teammates – come on…

Vandy has had that hand signal for as long as I can remember. No big deal. It clearly means V-U. Ever since Franklin came on board, he has been marketing it heavily.

You people wonder why the ” GA defensive players are jumping ship “, turn your brain on, Todd Grantham is gone after 2012 and they will not stick around. The news will only get worse as each new day arrives..

GA fans, please focus on the problems in Athens with the GA football team. We have major issues going on and all you people talk trash about other schools and recruiting. The UGA football program is falling apart, may get real ugly. It is terrible what is happening, more issues to come out in the next days.

Names of two main players being withheld by Mark Richt? Why

Georgiadunce

Shelton Dawson….couldn’t get in to Vanderbilt. They tried to recruit him, but no, he couldn’t get in, that’s why he was originally going to Memphis in the first place.

Also, that’s no “gang sign”, it’s 2 fingers and a thumb that means VU and it has been around forever. Just because Vanderbilt now has a coach younger than 40, and he poses with it instead of Johnson, who was in his late 50’s and not going to do a hand gesture, doesn’t mean it’s a “gang symbol”. Rather convenient it’s called a gang sign when it’s a black man doing it. And the kid is doing the same gesture, someone obviously can’t count fingers or has no depth perception.

Georgia fans do need to care about their own and they need to try to get over whatever it is they think they have against Franklin. Grantham was the hot head that overreacted in the entire thing and even Richt said what he was while talking to Grantham. Now you have one of the players that wouldn’t stop yelling over at the Vanderbilt sideline during the game and inciting the whole mess to begin with, suspended because he conveniently ate the wrong brownie or some lame excuse. So let’s calm down with the character stuff here, because you’re being way too fanatical if you think UGA players and Grantham were just innocent by the big bad first-year Vanderbilt coach.

I wouldn’t throw out stuff about Vanderbilt players smoking weed or getting thrown out either, since UGA’s had that market cornered for years. Not many Vanderbilt players have gotten kicked out for fondling people in bars or urinating on someone after they assaulted them. Yeah, UGA, full of a bunch of saints, I’m sure.

Vanderbilt was in a bowl game last year, the same bowl game that Georgia was in 2 years ago. So it’s not like these recruits have no example of VU getting to bowls. I get the sense some of you would’ve offed yourself had that WR from Georgia for VU, picked up that blocked punt and scored last year or that other WR from Georgia caught that pass in the end zone, to beat UGA as well.

Someone please explain to me how these low grade commits,( excuse me young men but you are not elite-level), and a coach at Vanderbilt are building a fence in this sate? The “writer” sure can pick some awful, misleasding, and uneducated headlines. Period. Just say Vandy gets another one. Vanderbilt is neither recruiting or getting commitments from players with high expectations on the football field nor on the same level as, dare I say, even late to the party Georgia. Let alone Alabama, Florida, and FSU, when it comes to recruiting the state of Georgia. The headline and the first paragraph is representative of bad writing choices. Vanderbilt hasn’t even built a fence around Tennessee. This was idiotic to write about. Write something when they actually sign a player with typical D1 size, talent, and expectations. If Vanderbilt was getting all these studs, I guess they will actually win the East in 3 years? Yeah, right. Even when they had Cutler, they sucked.

What’s the deal with Atlanta sports writer’s obsession with Franklin? I’m expecting to find a column about his daily bathroom trips. Kinda funny when you think about the obsessing with all things Franklin.

I live in Nashville, but grew up in Atlanta. I love to keep up up with the Braves, Tech and the Dawgs by internet.

It’s nice to have an energetic coach like Franklin who has Vandy at least moving upward… hope it can continue! I had season tickets for football and basketball for over 30 years at Vandy. Came home disappointed after most EVERY football game. Basketball was a little different, many more wins to enjoy.

So I say “good luck,” coach Franklin. Maybe my hometown Atlanta writers and fans can get over coach Franklin in time. In the meantime, I’m gonna enjoy his successes.

When Vandy starts taking kids UGA is after I think we can discuss a “fence”. On the flip, UGA often goes into TN and takes their top players. As for what is going on with the suspensions, etc, it will probably be much ado about nada, come next fall. In other words, 18-21 yr olds being who they are. Now if UGA kids start kicking cops in the head, or robbing folks, etc, I’ll worry about but this other stuff just kinda goes with the territory and if we weren’t so harsh on first offenders, you wouldn’t even hear about it. Safe bet we’re 4-0 going into the end of Sept and this will all be a footnote.

Does “build a fence” around Georgia make sense in the context of an out of state school?

A Father

Franklin has worked harder than any of the GA coaches and the improvements on the field and growth of the Vandy program is starting to show, with this hard work and the newly signed extended contract I believe Vandy is building a much stronger program. Currently there is enough athletes if recruited properly, ie: depth chart and needs and coached up can actually turn a weak program around pretty quickly. Ga is not an elite program, lazy coaches, poor results, no team dedication, and definitely not coached up. Alot of schools are passing by GA and the love affair with Richt has become a major problem in my belief. Butts Mehre has zero leadership starting with Adams and McGarity!

cdpridg: that is yet to be determined: Franklin is inside GA getting very good athletes and seems that they are 1) intelligent, 2) good character,3) good image, 4) can be coached up and 5) not get in trouble. That is five things not happening at UGA.

Vandy was not able to recruit several players in 2011 that they had a shot at because of academics, UGA, sign a player who cannot pass high school courses, comes to GA and smokes dope but somehow stays elgible with grades, ” RIIGGGHHHTTTT “

Since the SEC East was formed, please tell us all how many years GA beat all 5 teams in the east the same year. Now we have 6th team in the East. GA has sucked for a very long time in football. Kevin, I have been hearing some things for the past couple weeks regarding Vandy and 2012.

Now we have stipulations about winning the East. Vandy will never be relevant in a football conversation (basketball and baseball yes but never football) As I stated earlier, Vandy has NEVER and will NEVER win the East and now all of a sudden they are building a fence around Ga. Comical at best!!

I thought 6 wins would have been average but after research they actually average about 4 wins a season. They have had (1) season since 2000 where they finished above .500. Tell me Father, have you actually heard that they have any expectations for football this year? I actually think GT can crush you guys and that’s pretty bad. Georgia is a complete mess right now but I feel better after looking up some Vandy stats ( first time I’ve ever done that).

Kevin: GA has never beat all 5 SEC East teams in a football season:

The Case Most of Past Years:
Vandy — very weak
Kentucky — very weak
S Carolina — below average
Tennessee — very weak the last several years
Florida — up and down over the past few years

We need a coach that can at least win these five games, we have yet to find one.

Ga in most years is the 5th to 7th best team in the SEC. This to me is unacceptable.

I see no real difference in the 5 to 7 position as opposed to a vandy, kentucky, ole miss, miss state, in the 9 to 12

2011 we were the 5th best SEC team — UNACCEPTABLE

This young man has outstanding academics and epitomizes student athlete, and in that order. Any SEC school would be proud to have him, for if any of you saw the CNN special on UCONN and it’s basketball program graduation rate is was abysmal. Students like this young man can help any and all athletic programs.

Moreover, alot of the bloggers on this site only care if the athlete is loyal to their institution and forget that these are 18 year old kids themselves, but some of you act 12 to 18 with your racist comments that were ascertained at home and or via your current and past social environments.
