I like the idea of a former player and Hines Ward would be at the top of that list. The “today’s kids” sure as heck know the name Hines Ward.

I would rather you hire another recruiting coordinator to do the job that Garner is too lazy or to old to do anymore. A younger person that has some energy that will recruit 3 or 4 years out . Garner isn’t going anywhere because he has been so loyal to Georgia but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a ci-recruiting coordinator or just give Garner a desk job.

The job comes off as an admintrative assistant; you can get a graduate student to do that. At best case you will turn away good candidates because of the adminstrativia in the description.
Task the individual with building the best recruting department–the gold standard that everyone recognizes as ‘the best’. You might say this is Mark Richt’s job and in many ways it is–but I do believe that the recruting effort needs to be ramped up.
Why not hire a real known name to head up that important task. If you look at the top recruiting schools year in and year out–they have 3 or 4 really highly respected individuals who can attract talent and close the deal. And their recruting effort is on high plane. The process and outcome are different.
I am a UGA graduate…think that there are some good, solid recruiters on the staff–not sure there are any great recruiters; or that the Recruting department that highly respected ‘well oiled machine’.

Good men, of high character which is important–but, are other schools ‘concerned’ when that individual is onto a recruit? I think not–
Southern Cal…has three or four of them; Alabama and Auburn have a couple–don’t believe that at UGA we have that individual who is a really feared if he is on the case. Or…is our Recruiting Department seen as ‘gold standard’. The state is a gold mine. If we could ramp up our effectiveness 20% we would see a national champtionship.
Hines Ward would be an interesting addition–got the name recognition, highly respected and we know that he is a hard worker. From the Atlanta area…his name would resonate with others outside of Georgia. The question I might have about Hines…does he really want to work that hard–driving to some of the far fetched places that one has to go?

With all of that said–for goodness sake, take the adminstrative duties out of the job description and focus on the leadership of the function and be committed to having the most respected recruting ‘machine’ in collegiate sports.

THIS POSITION SHOULD BE OFFERED TO HINES WARD, case closed. Perhaps they could also remove some of the minor admin duties noted above in the position description so that he could also offer assistance as a receiver’s coach as well.

You guys are crazy. This jo will pay probably 35k, and you think Hines Ward is going to be the recruiting secretary for 35k? He is going to go from millions per year to 35k? Gimme a break. This will be a young, sharp guy looking to make a name for himself in the recruiting business imo.

You guys who want past football stars to do this job may be off your rocker. First, you really have to be a recruiting nerd. Tonnes and tonnes of film watching etc. of kids playing high school football. I do not see a former UGA and NFL star with a pretty good ego doing this kind of work.

Wow, we are looking at hiring one guy when Bama has a former head coach and star recruiter in Joe Panunzio and a former rising star in Billy Napier. When you look at how much money is being spent by Bama, Auburn, LSU, Ark and SC there is a direct correlation to the success that they are having on the field and the lack of consistent success that we are experiencing. Bama earned $72M and spent $31M, we on the other hand earned $71M and spent $17M, all of the other aforementioned programs with the exception of Bama (only slightly) earned less than us but spent or re-invested more back into their programs.

Simply put, You Get What You Pay For!!!

UGA should hire WnE for this position. He is a self-proclaimed expert at evaluating Talent and identifying ELITE ATHLETES. He has special insight into how the teenage mind works and what it takes to GET To the Next LEVEL. Other qualifications include his hatred of Georgia Tech, elitists, and Coach Paul Johnson, who he calls Coach Kung Fu Panda. He is a twitter expert and loves Coach Richt. Please give this boy a job.

The thought of putting Hines Ward into a position that he knows very little about or has had a chance to display the type of work ethic that would be involved would be a colossal mistake. Most former athletes, especially those just leaving the game are not prepared for the real world and real work, there needs to be a period of one establishing a track record of true work ethic first.

I have learned from numerous former athletes that when you have millions in the bank and do not HAVE to work, most of them will not work or at least put forth the effort required to be successful.

You folks are crazy. This job will pay peanuts. It is a paper shuffling job with no salesmanship to recruits involved. Out of guilt Richt had to pay Cantor out of his pocket. Simply a steppingstone position.

I should have clarified why I think Garner needs to be put out to pasture or at least a co-recruiting coordinator hired. CMR has had a top 10 recruiting class for probably 10 years but have barely ended up in the top 10 except for only a few years. Some of that under performance can be blamed on bad coaching but most of that UNDER PERFORMANCE is because of poor recruiting. Having more than enough defensive lineman but not having a great nose tackle for the 3-4 will create a hole that every good team will more than take advantage of. Having four , 4-star or 5-star tailback’s mean nothing if all are small , shorts speedsters. You need a couple that are 6′2″ , 225lbs. and fast for breaking tackles and power running. You can have 3, 5-star Quarterback’s on your team that all run the option great in high school but if none are pocket passers and that’s what your offensive coordinator runs you aren’t going to play to your strength.
Georgia has UNDER-PERFORMED because of too many gaps at certain positions and that is because of poor recruiting which the recruiting coordinator is in charge of. Some positions have had more than enough great players.
Since Grantham’s hiring our defense has had a lot fewer gaps and I think that is because of Grantham taking charge of every position on defense , not Garner and that is the reason the defense looks so good and finished 5TH in the nation last year. Lack of depth was our defenses only problem last year and that was on Garner not Grantham who had only one year under his belt recuiting. If a third of your 5-star or 4- star recruit’s flunk out of school or get kicked off the team for being thugs I don’t care if Georgia comes into first place every year in recruiting they will never play as a team good enough to win championships. Finishing in the top 10 mean nothing if you recruit the wrong players.

I just dont get the leadership of Georgia Athletic Departmart, Butts Mehre Building. When house the most overpaid group of lazy individuals regarding our football program and now we need to hire another person the do the job of Rodney Garner and Mark Richt. I feel like the football employees have become RETARDED.

Football Recruiting: Total of 85 scholarships available during the year

How about this breakdown for these idiots not willing to work for the large salaries:

1) Depth Chart list each player, position and status with class
2) Each position must have scholarship players spread throughout depth chart in specific numbers
3) Total scholarships available should never exceed 28 from a prior year, even with attrition
4) Annual Needs regardless of attrition and elgibility run out
a) 1 QB preferably 6′3″ and has a strong arm
b) 5 Offensive Lineman
c) 2 Running Backs
d) 1 Tight End
e) 2 Recievers
f) 2 defensive lineman
g) 2 defensive ends
h) 4 linebackers
i) 4 defensive backs ( includes safeties )

Total 23 of the players to be recruited are known prior to each year.

Why is it that Georgia has so much trouble with this simple exercise to maintain and continue and year after year quality of athletes at each and every position?

Tired of the continued excuses, relaxing the job definition for the Head Coach because he has grown lazy, Head Coach does not demand work ethic from the coaches he hires, AD hires and hires and hires because he will not demand work ethic and excellance from current coaches. Georgia football has become irrelevant nationally because of excuses, laziness, lack of leadership and acceptance of being last, if you are not first you are last. Hiring additional employees to do the job others have already been hired to do but fail to do is not the answer, fire the dead beat current employees and get some hungry energetic employees who strive to be “FIRST” at all times.

For many, plenty of money after retirement means $ is no longer a motivator. However, staying busy doing something you love can be huge. Parts of the job will be administrative but that is just stuff in the job description which can be delegated. Be interesting to see who lands in the position. Ward definately has the interpersonal skills, name recognition, and work ethic to be successful.

From what I read on some of these posts, Mark Fox needs to do a similar hire with the coach a lot of people on here keep referring to, that has so much influence on the kids and the coaches throughout the state of Georgia. Seriously if this position will be dealing face to face with recruits, parents, coaches, etc. we can’t just assume any former Dawg would be adequate or better. The successful candidate should have people/communication skills, not just former All-Pro, NFL Veteran, Hall of Famer, etc………………………………………unless it is Grayson’s HC AND his prize player as suggested earlier on here.
